She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

When I first started playing ED, in 2018, I looked through the range of available ships and as soon as I saw the Cutter I just knew I wanted it. I had no context for what it could do or what I'd need to do to get it, I just knew I had to have one.

The Mandalay is the first ship since then to give me that same feeling - as soon as I saw it, I knew it was a ship I actively wanted in my fleet. Day one, having bought the Stellar version, and it doesn't disappoint at all - I'm loving just Bubble hopping in it from one Engineer to the next, with some mat gathering as needed.

Once I've got it engineered to my liking I'll be off into the wild black yonder and I honestly can't wait.

Great job with this one FDev. o7

I feel like a noob. What are the best choices for explorer for Utility Mounts?
As Koma Pahu said, one lightweight heat sink can be useful in case of an emergency (e.g. when you jump through a star of a binary system, which will eventually happen if you explore a lot).

Additionally, I like E-rated shield boosters with heavy duty on my exploration builds, since they provide a significant boost to shield strength at the cost of only 2T and a modest power consumption per booster. With several of them, you can get a pretty solid shield that allows you to lithobrake for fast landing :)

At least two chaff launchers on the underside of the ship.... for creating dramatic screenshots.

In related news, I regret to inform everybody that their Mandalay isn't "finished" until they've purchased the ship-kit and fitted bumper #2.... which looks flippin' epic and makes the ship look tot'z amazeballs.

Lovely ship, for the most. TBH, the only thing I'm not keen on is the loudness of the thrusters. Compared with all the other ships I've used, it's borderline offensive (for me) on speed changes. A 25% reduction in volume would be an improvement, personally speaking. YMMV, obviously. ;)

Well, I didn't want to look too carefully until the ship was released, in case the Mandy' couldn't do the same job (daily driver) as my Phantom but it does.

Main difference is that my Phantom has a C5 cargo rack but, fortunately, I can use the Mandy's 2x C4 slots to get the same cargo capacity, with the added benefit that I can use CR racks, and my Phantom uses a 5H GFSDB to achieve 58Ly whereas the Mandy uses a 3H GFSDB and still jumps 70Ly.
My Phantom has 6D thrusters and does 386/540m/sec while the Mandy uses 5Ds and does 426/532m/sec.
Both ships use a 5A shield but the Phantom does slightly better as a result of having C3 shield booster and HRP whereas the Mandy' only has a C1 shield booster and HRP.
It's not a big difference, though, and, for the sort of combat it'll see, I'll bug out as soon as the shield gets low.

Haven't really settled on weapons yet. It'll definitely be having lasers & MCs but I just stuck the frag's on it 'cos I had them laying around.
I guess it's really begging for a pair of 1D rails but, again, it's really only intended for casual/defensive combat so I'm not sure it needs rails.
Might bung C1 advanced missile racks in there instead.

100% agreed on this. It's so loud I had to lower my in-game volume from 75% to around 25%. And it's still loud.

They better not give it a size 4 FSD.
It's Frontier. They have been remarkably charitable of late, but this is a recent development over the more usual "ship must be pants for reasons" mentality that has resulted in so many ordinary rides. I hope so to. It's a sexy ship. I like it too. :)

Frontier's sound engineers know how to party, the boost sound is incredible. Sadly I can't hear it anymore due to it blowing out my eardrums. But yes. It's a tad.. noisy.

Here's my Mandalay mission-runner. With some tweaks I got the jumprange up to 74.5 LY. 1215 hull, 609 shields, boosts at 534 m/s.

Found a few problems with decals on the Mandalay when equipping Seeker Steel paintjob (and most likely others).
This is the Distant Worlds 2 decal, and the Golconda decal is also not displayed correctly.
(and while I'm at it, the Distant Worlds one was mirrored when attached to the left side of my Krait Phantom)

Same with my "Lunar Hunter" Decal, B/W outline drawing. (With the Stellar Pack red PJ)
Hopefully it is just a minor bug that will get sorted in the fullness of time.
