ship models are a bit " simpel"

The ships and stations in the original Elite were designed like that so that they did not have any concave corners to the wireframes, which would have significantly complicated the drawing algorithm, presumably beyond the capabilities of the old BBC's 6502 processor.

I don't have a problem with the fundamental design. I just think they're lacking some detail for 2014/15. When I look outside my ship at the stars and planets, the sense of looking out in to space is very strong. When I look at a Sidewinder in the outfitting dock, the sense that I'm looking at a spaceship is nowhere near so strong.

Yes, but beautiful cheeseblocks :).
I would love to own such a cheese block in real life.

I will sell you this cheeseblock for 111,000 credits

I like ED a lot, so I really don't want to start a war against the old Elite fans, I know there is a lot nostalgic feelings about the Cobra's and the Sidewinders.
But as a new player (for the first time playing an Elite game) I think the ship models are all a bit the same, sidewinder, cobra, anaconda, etc
Ok size is different and the specs are different, but the models are the same.
( Somewhere I read that you were flying a doorstopper, funny :) )I think it would be nice if there are some other shaped ships.
Will they come in the future game ?

I think that's a little bit harsh in all honesty and as someone else stated we've seen five of twenty five planned for release. As a trading ship I think the Type 9 looks awesome but I hope as we see more of the Imperial ships I think some are going to be stunners (I'm expecting the courier to be nothing short of beautiful to look at). There are number of ships for the game that are heritage models from the original, i.e. sidewinder, cobra, asp, adder, krait and the much anticipated fer de lance. So there there are constraints on how they can be embellished whilst maintaining their identity. I'm not really the fan of going the route of creating a bunch of ships that look like courting peacocks either so on a personal level its not something I am hugely concerned about.

With all that said I can relate to the OPs point to some extent and I do hope we start to see some really exciting designs in the coming months. I also understand there is likely going to be an Imperial version of the Eagle which could possibly be even more of a visually impressive ship. One thing I will say is that the Eagle is one extremely exciting ship to pilot.

Put three fixed weapons on that and battle in the asteroid field.. Its an intense experience. ;)

LOL, you have to visit a eye specialist ;)

I love the Design of the Ships. And dont forget : The will follow AT LEAST 20 other ships. But hey, they looking surely all the same right?

I think part of this is that the artists seem to have decided upon a pseudo-graphic novel style of aesthetic rather than a photo-realistic one. All the textures look as if they've been lifted off the page of an ink and wash drawing.

Yes that's a good way of putting it.

I love the ships but I played the original games and have an affinity with them.
That being said, ship design in the game promises to get a lot more exciting. There are different ship manufacturers with different design criteria and style. I read in the novels that Core Dynamics produce the Eagle and Python, so it'll be good to see this old classic re-mastered. I think the Lakon is from the same stable as the Asp.
The ships are going to be quite diverse and linked, I reckon.

I keep whooshing a dairylea triangle around the kitchen now pretending it's a Viper! :D

I think that custom paintjobs could help a lot with making the ships look better. The Cobra is really fine with that blue finish, I really would love to see a mettalic/black one though with shark teeth all over the place. :D
