ship models are a bit " simpel"

Well, at some point seamless planetary landing will be part of the game, so designs which could conceivably survive a transition into atmosphere, and then fly in it, are going to be dominant.

Which means a lot of flying wing/lifting body types, and probably an absence of asymmetry or the pointy-spindly-bits-all-over-it-aesthetic.

Lots of cheese wedges, then :)

If you have a look at the Elite: Dangerous newsletters that come out periodically there are a lot more varied designs to come. The Sidewinder and Cobra are nostalically modelled to appeal to fans of the original games, but there are more sleek and shiny models to come.

This is from a personal point of view so don't think this is a dig at anyone ,but I really could'nt care less about the quality of the graphics. As long as they do their purpose (and they do quite well) I'd take gameplay over graphics any day of the week .
There seems to be too much emphasis over the past few yrs about eye candy . I do like a good looking game as much as the next gamer but is a game breaker no , and never will be .
Look at minecraft as a game , you can't get any simpler graphics wise as that game but look at how popular it is(I am not one of those, not because of the gameplay just not my Tetley). For me it can be photorealistic and still people won't buy it if there isnt appeal and feeling towards what you feel should be achieved in the way it should be portrayed on a personal level otherwise its dead in the water.

As far as I am concerned the ships look great..if adding more detail takes away from the frame rate then keep them simple I say.....Also there are more ships to add to the mix, I am so looking forward to the classics...

I'm not overly crazy about the sidewinder, but it is a starter ship.

Love the Cobra though. Reminds me of the Millennium Falcon.

They may look simple, but they still look good.
A sidewinder is pretty much a budget ship, it's functional and does what it does, but there's no room for luxury and flashy looks. Just like how a budget car doesn't look like a ferrari.

Also, keep in mind that all ships in Elite are actually pretty large, even a sidewinder. They aren't fighters blasting off of carriers, they are stand alone ships that can travel the galaxy, so they require cargospace and functionality that supports the pilot for extensive periods of time. So function will dictate form for atleast the lower model range.

Elite was actually ahead of it's time (in more ways than one).

Notice the polygons? These are all the latest stealth ship designs.

And if you think the sidewinder looks like the cobra you have no eye for details.

Seems that the design of the ships is influenced by the letterbox shape of the entry/exit window to the docking stations.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I think the ship designs are more mechanical and practical than other games. You don't want to have long bits point out all over the place that can easily get shot off or torn off in collisions.

Exactly, form follows function. Whether you're hauling cargo, pulling high g manoeuvres or getting into combat; intricate designs would either limit your storage capacity, snap off or present a bigger target.

Having said that, if I was to buy a luxury space yacht that can only go in a straight line, slowly, and carry no cargo but me and my buddies, I'd want it to look outrageous.

Before I sign off I'm going to light the blue touchpaper and retire to a safe distance.

For me it's about immersion, but capital ships could be a different matter.

I think people have been spoiled with certain games having all kinds of impractical and implausible protrusions simply because look how many polygons per second we can display and we're going to use all of them. Like one of the earlier posters I want my ship to look realistic. If it's got a funny spike or a tail it's got to be there for a purpose. I think the Cobra is one of the most stunning things to look upon in the history of things. Give me one to put on my desk and I'd never look at anything else (with apologies to the other half).

Yeah, it would allow the wealthy to show off. A statement that you have so much money that you can make this glorious, ostentatious ship that serves no practical purpose other than to look wonderful. No military vessel would look like it but potentially commercial craft would like cruise liners etc.
