Ship name censored - turn off

If you go out anywhere in public you'll find people getting beaten up, robbed, stabbed and racially abused as well. These are part of the "real world" too. Should we consider those acceptable just because a minority, like the minority who swear, like to do them?

Should we also consider gassing people in Syria, torturing people in North Korea, and detention without trial in China acceptable just because a minority choose to do them?

You might consider these examples extreme, and they are, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. If you let people get away with the minor offences, then it can only escalate to other things.

Just wow! You're trying to draw parallels with someone dropping the F word with violent muggers, racists and oppressive dictatorships.

You start handing out tickets for every minor offense, like swearing, and pretty soon you end up living in a police state. Can't have the proles stepping out of line can we. What next, no kissing in public or holding hands because they're deemed offensive? You end up turning into one of those afore mentioned countries.

In this instance here in this game, the easiest accommodation would be to be able to just have a simple check box as to whether you want the profanity filter on or off. Then you can "choose" whether you want to be offended or not. The same thing exists in many other games, where you can toggle off the gore or the bad language etc, why not here?

against censorship

There's a simpler solution - publicly denounce the Ratings Systems (PEGI/ESRB) not just a single developer, but in a gathering of developers - industry wide. State the truth we all already know - that these ratings are arbitrary and meaningless as they are not only not enforced but cannot be enforced.

Sure, we all know the guy at the game store is SUPPOSED to ask, but we also know they don't give a rat's unwashed business end about who buys what. They're there to make money.
And what happens if Johnny 10 year old happens to buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto IX? Do the police come and shut down the business? Arrest Billy Gamejockey? No. Maybe some news station with nothing else to report on tries a bit of public shaming, but that's about it. Most people roll their eyes, and no one cares.
It's not like they're selling drugs, alcohol or tobacco. They're selling games.

And let's not forget, even if Johnny 10 Yearold gets told "No, you're too young to buy that", he's just going to cry at his mommy and she'll buy it for him to shut him up. And the almighty ratings system goes swirling down the drain once more.

Why? Because they really are nothing more than a bunch of powerless, meaningless, unimportant nosy folk who think they know better than anyone else - especially when it comes to raising children which many of them do not and with any luck will not ever have of their own.

Ahh, I remember that only once in my 21 year long life I've been told that I can't buy a game without my parents approval because I'm too young. I remember I had to phone my sleeping father who was around his sixties and had felt terrible for weeks after cancer removal surgery so that he could tell this woman teller that I am allowed to purchase it. What a twit.
Why I'm telling you this? Maybe I need to write off a bit. But also, I feel like many others and I have lived long enough to go through crap in our lives to be able to handle some bad words and puns. Give us an option to turn off the filters, scared of legal action? write a disclaimer in the contract.

“What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.”

I'm utterly disgusted by people attempting to enforce their own values on other people. There needs to be a toggle. I am far more offended by poorly implemented censorship than by some "bad words".

If people are so worried about their children hearing or reading unsavory language, first I would say good luck, you face an impossible battle. Second I would support a check box with some sort of parental controls if you are so concerned, so that you can enjoy your child shooting lasers at the "USS EMB***Y" rather than the "USS EMBASSY".

+1 for a toggle to disable censored words for other ships, from my perspective only.

I'm the only one who plays ED in my house, and even if my girlfriend and my cat played it, none of us would care in the slightest. Even if i had kids, they'd likely not understand or care, until they're old enough to find it funny.

On an unrelated note, i had to ring up EE, to get my " filter" disabled on my phone. Not because i wanted to watch , but because it was blocking daft things, like Yahoo Answers, and forums. :p
I doubt they believed my reasons.

One of my ships will be named STELLAR ASSAULT, when i get around to it.
I'd prefer it, if it didn't show up as STELLAR ***AULT, which is likely to confuse people. But not as much as if they changed the word.
STELLAR DONKEYAULT.
