News Ship naming and Name Plates – how it will work

It's nice to know when the community threatens you with their wallets that you hastily respond, Frontier (not directed at Ed).

This "clarification" is the right decision... as it turns out, my wallet will now feel more liberal in your store in the near future.

Let this be a lesson to your marketing team - don't treat us like cows.

Precisely this. ;)

Sounds good to me :) I'll have 3 of your finest name plates post haste please (Well, as soon as the beta goes live at least) :)

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

Thanks for clearing things up.

I still think at least one default name plate should be included.
And this is not for me.
It's a principle.

I am all to weak, and will buy at least one of the packs, regardless.
Unless they look like biowaste, that is. :)

I considere that price too high. It's the same price than a paintjob.
These plates are the only way to show the ship name with the vanity camera, as the ship name will be visible in the HUD for free.
So, if you want to make a good video of Elite Dangerous, a video that will promote the game for free, you must pays the price of a paintjob ?

I think the price should be divide by 10 !

Frontier must have in mind that a lot of ppl playing that game haven't the money for that. Me, for example, I living with only 800€ each month (I'm ill, I can't work). I'm pretty sure that a lot of ppl are in the same kind of conditions that me. 2.5€ is too expensive !

I'm happy with that. Thanks Ed.

I'm sick of all the micro transactions in this game. I have, so far, paid you well over 100 dollars for the base game, and the Horizons season. I see no need, at this point, to pay you any more than that.

This clarification took too long, and smells of backtracking. I'm glad that the issue me and a lot of people had, have been put to rest, but I can't help but feel this is a reversal on a decision to charge.

Learn how to communicate effectively, promptly, and ensure ALL staff members are on board with the correct information before even mentioning things like this. It will save a lot of negative feelings in the future.

Yeah I'm usually pretty defensive of FD because everyone is always on their case all the time, but sometimes even I have to admit that there's something wrong. This was one of those times, whether it was a miscommunication (I originally thought it was an error but the general consensus of understanding had a lot of evidence to back it up) or ended up being a u-turn I'm not sorry I didn't take EffDev's side this time, it was a bit silly. I'm glad whatever it was it was cleared up and we're back on track.

Constructive criticism for any game, good or bad, is always a positive; but one must always try to remain impartial and logical, even if it is a game we have a high amount of respect for and love playing.

Blind devotion does no one any good.

I think the majority of people felt that Frontier was slipping when it came to their customer satisfaction; considering many dedicated players have already made many micro-purchases for their ships already, and were (are) planning on spending even more on Holo-me cosmetics when 2.3 goes live (not to mention putting up with bugs or under-optimizations throughout the development of this game).

No basic ship-naming registry, which everyone could see, would have just been a giant kick in the teeth for such a small quality of life improvement that could benefit everyone equally in the game.

It is okay to be angry with developers, because, without it, we wouldn't be able to rise to challenge their perception of what fair is and what fair isn't - and that is important to wrestle the wheel, to steer the game.

Bring on 2.3, looking forward to it!

I still think we should get a basic name decal by default.

I can't rep you more than one time !

A agree with this idea at 1000% !

This is the way Frontier must act with that, instead of that "you must pay the price of a paintjob if you want to show the name of your ship in a video that will promote the game we develop".

They've already taken the "free sample" approach with suits, I don't understand why they refuse to expand it to other areas as well.

No. This is still not OK. There should be one basic nameplate available for free.

Elite Dangerous is not an F2P game to use an F2P business model. Which is funny, because almost all F2P games have models more generous than Elite....

This is a manipulation, and a good one at that. Announce something crappy, people go angry. Then announce something 10x worse, people go insane. Clear up the second thing, and people are happy with original crappy. Textbook psychology.
Lovely. Thank you. Works for me. Seems entirely reasonable.

If people are going to argue something that costs less than a cup of coffee, imagine how much arguing that point to death would be worth if you actually had to bill the time.
It's about principles. Not all of us are willing to sell our principles for 2€.

You are going too far with your micro-transactions, Frontier. Stop it. We have already paid for the game, and the "season pass," what ever that is. Leave custom skins and textures for micro-transactions, not basic customizations.

This disincentives me from buying anything further for this game.

Certainly because they'd see their player base as a cow herd.

We make video that promote the game. Commanders creators seems to be avaliable only for those who bought Horizon. Now, you must pay to show the ship name.

It's absolutly not fair.

Commander's creator (the basis features) should be avaliable for all (Elite Dangerous standard and Horizon, on all platform) and ship names must be avaliable for free as a default feature, and if you want to customize your commander more, or showing your ship name in a more sexy way, then you'd be able to pay the feature.
