Ship Naming Decals [CONCEPT]

So I pick up my professional heretic role and ask for the freedom of shipnaming.

Well, the worst things you can blacklist for most common languages. This will filter 95% of possible insults.
But 1st you cannot create idiot proof things, because already Murphy knew that those things are used by Idiots only.
2ndly we are talking about 3% of player who might think this type of names are funny. And here you get it stopped
that in 95% rate because of above mentioned blacklist.

So don't be too shy to bring innovation into that game. A tiny thing that will have huge impact of how Commanders
will feel treated in this game.

By the way FD can put this respectful naming into their licnese agreement So if it is too heavy they can ask for change
or ban.

I have a french mate who's last name is litteraly "B*tch", he was named after the famous French city of B*tche (google it without the * , I'm not making this up)


So if he put's his last name on the ship do we tell him to change and threaten to ban him or?

There are a lot of words in other languages that are seemingly crude in English. It's an English game, English naming conventions apply. If it's too similar to an English word, it's not allowed.
It's not like player-named things is a new concept or anything.

As true as this is, the concept is inviting some proper trolling opportunities.


1. I heard its possible to change your CMDR name using cheat engine, if it's true people will just use that to bypass restrictions and write whatever they please on their ships.

2. I can already see a wing of 3x Corvettes / 3x T9's with the following insignias :


Ship 1: HITLER
Ship 2: WAS
Ship 3: RIGHT

And blockading the Jameson Memorial entrance

Nice idea & some good artwork for the examples.

Problem for FD would be moderating the inevitable swear, racist, ****phobic, etc words that many would have plastered on their ships.

or have a big warning any words deemed to be offence = CMDR ban on 1st offence, account ban on 2nd.

its not like we dont see rude and offensive stuff all the time in games any way.

my main worry of it being decals is that it would not be an ingame thing but a cash shop thing.... and whilst i get FD need to make money, its not something i want to pay cash for.

It's expressing an opinion, not a very nice opinion mind you, but an opinion nonetheless. It would be up to FD to decide if that's actionable or not.

I think it would be a combined effort between FD and the players to police the game. I'm optimistic that the player base of ED is quite mature.

Forza on the xbox had some humdinger offensive car skins...... and if caught the player was banned simple as that..... That being said, the people making them may have been crude offensive jerks, but there was no doubt some of them were talented crude offensive jerks.... the level of detail on some of the cars, given how exceptionally clunky the painting app was never ceased to impress

Its a question of blacklisting with sense for the exceptions and not blindly follow the balcklist.
As I said above you can place naming restrictions into license and check if for those guys applies.
If its his name. OK, no violence of the licnese, others may hit other roadblocks.

Only Problem: leads to some effort.

If you're that worried about offensive names (and it's entirely reasonable to be) then simply make it so nobody other than the player can actually see the names. Either through having the text sufficiently small that you're unlikely to notice it outside the debug camera, or plain not showing them for other CMDRs unless you enable a suitably-disclaimered option (in addition to the standard "banning people who feel the need to be too rude" method). Writing the NPC commander's name on AI vehicles would also be cool, particularly if there were a few different fonts depending on how "piratey" they are.

Alternate suggestion: If you want to name your ship, you'll need to buy a Vehicle Naming License from the FrontierStore for like a quid or something. The VNL appears in-game and you are permitted to use it once to rename your ship. In-game, you're basically buying a custom number plate.

Making people pay for the privilege of naming their ship will likely weed out those who aren't serious about it, and those who still haven't managed to grow up yet.

Keep the ship naming request to a text field in the shipyard so we can see what ship we are selecting,
and a text field on the left panel in the contacts tab.

Remember K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid.

Making it complicated by wanting decals gives Frontier a reason to not put ship naming in the game.

I can live with it not coming for ages personally. Perfectly happy just calling my ship THUNDER HORSE in my head as it is. It's all just a bit of colour. It just happens to be something that would look particularly badass down the line once we've got EVA and Legs.
