Engineers Short range multi-cannon ? How does this mod work exactly ?

New console pilot here. I'm making Engineer plans for Python (PvE trader). I've settled with 2x Large Pulse Laser, 1x Large Multi-cannon and 2x Medium Multi-cannon. I'm planning to mod 1 M-size MC to High-Capacity + Corrosive, but can't decide which mod should I put on reset two MCs, since almost all posts I've Googled are outdated (predating to Overcharged & Incendiary nerf).

I've read from Coriolis that the Short Range mod will increase thermal load and decreases the maximum distance, but the damage falloff distance remains the same. In the case of MC, it means that the damage output will remain the same level within 1,800 meters, and quickly drop to zero for the any further. In exchange I can have 75% increase in damage output and suffers no penalty from clip-size and power distributor draw. While the Overcharged will have slight lower DPS gain and higher power distributor draw.

Considering that I usually engage NPC pirates within the range of 1400M to 800M, Short Range mod sounds too good to be true.

My question is: what is the drawback of Short Range mod for multi-cannon, other than nearly-zero damage beyond 1800M and higher thermal load ? I've read somewhere (one of the outdated posts) that the projectile speed is decreased too, but can't find any description on Wiki and INARA. How does the projectile speed works exactly ?

Get a friendly advice, dont bother with that mod,Overcharged gives you 70%dps increase after 3.0...there is no mod that is even close,or worth your time and effort.

But Short Range give you 75% DPS increase after 3.0, even higher than Overcharged. Just wanna know what’s the catch.

whats the catch? shorter range and higher heat.

afaik there is no bullet speed modifier for this.
but the heat mod could cause issues depending on how many of those you use.

OK so no Incendiary with Short Range. Got it. Thanks.

I’d try Short Range + Auto Loader for large, Overcharged + Incendiary for Medium, and High Capacity + Corrisive for another Medium. Sounds fun.

i'm running short range mod on C4 Cannons on my Vette, they works great,

on PA not so great, i alsotried short range beam laser but nothing beats efficient mod

i'm currently building a Krait with 3 multis and 2 Railsguns all short range mod, first test run was nice [big grin]
but it needs more testing

IMHO, the best use for short range, is on a weapon that has not much use at more then its falloff range in the first place.

AKA: a short range intertial impact burst laser - it has so much jitter that you can hit anything reliable past 500m,
but with thermal + kinetic damage, + short range damage bonus

I dabbled with a "Short Range Blaster" setup a little while back. I had other weapons too, but fitted a couple of Short Range Blaster Multicannons Turrets as secondary, hull ripping weapons. Stats wise they looked promising however, whether it was something about my combat technique or something else, the darn things on rarely fired. I thought I was regularly closing to within 500 Metres of my targets and I could see the Multicannons tracking targets, but they very rarely fired.

Not sure if it was a turret thing, or a combo of the mod being applied to a turret - I'd not tried it with fixed or gimbals. I had no specific goal in mind at the time, I was just tinkering.

Scoob.

Are we talking gimballed or fixed weapons?

I personally use short range on some gimballed & turreted weapons, but not on fixed weapons.
The reason is that the gimball/turret jitter will cause so many of your shots to miss the target quite frequently at medium to long range.
