3- Vinyl records.. perfect background for exploring
4- 6ft 1080p projector
5- Gaming/HTPC.. soon to have all the guts upgraded thanks to Horizons (Currently GTX 770, AMD A10, 16gig ram)
6- Hockey on the backup tv
7- Scotch.. Never explore without scotch :)

nice, I like the projector, thought about getting one myself a while ago, but went with a 47" hdtv instead. are you happy with it? what model if you don't mind me asking.

I LOVEEEE IT!!

I built the projector screen myself for about 40 bucks and I have never regretted going the projector route. The model I have is an Optoma 3D 1080p I don't remember the model number but the current version of it is the HD30B.

I just happened to have a perfect area of the basement for the screen to go and can manage ambient light very easily. A good projector set up is helped immensely by having the right kind of area for it.

Love the idea with the projector. You've just given me a great idea for a project in the new year. Can I just pick your brains a little?. What are the dimensions of your screen, are you happy with the graphics on it with E:D Horizons or do you wish that you had made it bigger/smaller?. How big is the room roughly?. Reps sent.

my brain is yours for the picking!
The screen is 70x40 inches. I built the screen in 16:9 aspect ratio which is a choice you'll have to make.. Most movies are in some other ratio so it just is a matter of where you want the black bars and when.

The basement area where the theater is contained is aprox 20x20 feet.

I have no problem with the screen size either too big or too small. I went with the biggest possible size given where I could mount the projector. There are a lot of variables with this process that you have to work though. There are some great tools online that help with the aspect ratios and planning how far back you have to mount the projector to get a target screen size.

As as far as the graphics I would say they hold up pretty well at that size. I am going to have to upgrade my gpu as a result of horizons.. Currently everything is ultra except the planet stuff. It would very much benefit from heartier AA settings than my card can handle. Soon I'll have a card that can handle everything on ultra and supersampling, but until then they are still very good. The bigger "issue" with ED and a projector comes from projectors in general. The biggest weakness of entry level projectors are their black levels.. Which for a game that takes place in space is important. I would say my projector is upper entry level but could be much better in that area. Projectors that are very good at black levels are very very spendy however.

So I would say if you want a movie theater experience for movies,tv and games yes ED is amazing played that way.. But for the money if you were looking for something ONLY for gaming I might go a different route. Works amazing for me as the "do everything" theater

feel free to fire any more questions you might have my way :)

Well now, there wouldn't be very much to look at with a VR helmet on now would it? :) But seriously though I have contemplated on getting one but these very affordable 1080p screens and i personally don't think the VR helmet is ready for customer use yet. I'll probably jump on the wagon in about 2 years.

Thanks for the compliment always!

I disagree. I play ED exclusively with my DK2 and wouldn't go back to a monitor setup. Yes the monitor (or 3) gives you a better good resolution and eye candy but the immersion and sense of 3D that an HMD gives just can't be beaten and more than makes up for the resolution drop. As for it not being ready, I guess it depends on what you see as being consumer ready but it is pretty much plug and play already.

Love your chair though! I want one!!

Palit Jetstream GTX780
Saitek X52 pro

I use the optical audio output through the hi-fi amp to the JBL monitors, which sounds great.

Some video captured from my action cam. This is from the beta but the purpose of this video was to show off the view that I have when I play Elite. I'm using TrackIR, Roccat Power Grid and Ambibox with a Saitek X52 running through my 65 inch Sony TV in 4K. It's worth noting that although my head moves around quite a bit, due to the TrackIR, it's not uncomfortable at all when playing... after all the camera is not showing where my eyes are looking.

Really like this one! makes me wish my TV was up against a wall. I sometimes hook my PC up the the 4k telly and I was surprised how many games I could run in 4k as I thought it would be a total slideshow but it was fine really.

Upgraded the graphics cards

GTX980TI SLI INSTALLED.jpg

Will test Elite at 4K tomorrow to see how it looks and performs hopefully it will be alot better than with the 780Ti SLI setup.

New year, new Rig!

The (new) Beast!

Secret Stormtrooper storage..

Cool life giving water - stuffed full of life killing chemicals!

Must worship the Monolith..

System Specs

CPU: Intel i7 5930k Over Clocked to 4.4GHz. Water cooled.
GPU: 2x GTX680 in SLI + 1x GTX580.
RAM: 32GB Avexir DDR4 2400MHz.
MB: Asus Rampage V Extreme.
HDD: 256 GB Samsung M.2 PCI-e System Drive. Corsair Force 3 120Gb SSD (Games Drive) 1x SanDisk 240Gb SSD (Games Drive 2) + 3x 500Gb Storage drives + 2x 1TB Drives.
Optical: LG BR Reader DVD+- RW.
PSU:
Enermax Platimax 1500W Modular.
Case: Antec Nineteen Hundred – Red.
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit SP1.

Still to come, another 32GB of RAM, a pair of GTX980's and a GT720 (to run the extra monitors.)

At the moment I'm getting around 45 FPS in stations and a flat 60 FPS in space. The massive amount of RAM is to aid in video editing, but lets face it, there is no such thing as overkill when gaming!

Thanks for looking,
Brian :)
