I've only gone and got tonsilitis 😭 what are your best ways to soothe a sore throat?

So far I've been trying:
  • honey
  • gargling salt water
  • hot water with honey, lemon, ginger and sometimes whiskey
  • strepsils but I quickly get sick of them
  • lemsip / ibuprofen (painkillers)

I've got antibiotics etc. Just want some relief!

It's refreshing to have something that isn't covid I guess 😅 the last few years the only thing I've had is covid (well, and cancer, but I got lucky there! Just hit year 4 🤟)
While I'm not an expert, I recommend the following things: Drinking tea, soup or hot liquids could help. I've also heard that ice pops help to mitigate pain. Aplaying cold compresses on the outside of the neck could also help. All this recommendations are only temporary measures, so I recommend you to go to see a doctor. Wish you luck!

Thanks hon. I've been to the doc. Cold compress is a good one, hadn't thought of that :)

I had a sore throat for the whole last week. It's not fun! I hope you get better soon!

If your illness is virus-based you can try adding raw garlic to your food. Garlic has a strong anti-viral working. This method is quite commonly used in Poland and I would say it works for me. If you don't mind the smell too much!

Wishing you a speedy recovery! ☀️

Enough sugar free bonbons to make my mouth numb

Those liquid lemsip drink/sachets and honey strepsils are my to go to combo for sore throats. Although it's really just sleep that actually solves the problem most likely, September is always a bad month for me as both my hay-fever and asthma flares up to the case where I may "lose" my voice.

And sorry for being boring; but again, be careful with the lemsip and don't keep taking them longer than they advise

After being diagnosed with a minor genetic heart thingy, I've been told to avoid decongestants.which means most flu medications and most cough syrups
And I'm no expert, but a little reading explains that this is because decongestants work by constricting your blood vessels - good for stopping your nose running, not so good for your heart

A fact I wish I'd known earlier, so I'm happy to be boring and pass it on :geek:

What could help is a lot of inhalation (just some hot water with some salt or some balm that is safe to inhale). This year I had a lot of problems with coughing, I had bronchitis in the beginning of the year and in the last weeks I had it again but inhalation always helped a lot! If you don't cough, still try it out. Inhalation helps to dissolve the mucus and is a bit anti-inflammatory, too.

Aw thanks lovelies :)
And sorry to hear about all y'all your health woes. Being sick sucks.

I'm watching netflix series between naps. Endless herbal tea or hot water with honey. Dog curled up next to me and fluffy heated blanket on. Really can't complain. I've been through worse! Fever has broken now so that helps.

The pharmacy said they were giving out tonnes of antibiotics at the moment, and the doctor did a swab test as part of a wider study in the uk to see what viruses are going around. Interesting, they didn't used to do that before covid (in my experience anyway).

It's funny, before I started working in rail, I used to enjoy the sound of a distant train horn. Now I find it incredibly annoying, because I have to hear it up close all day/night every day/night.

Ooh, are you a train driver? Engineer? I love the sound of trains, even when I lived next to the train station. Just loved the sound, made me feel like an adventure was always on its way / or that I was living in a Tennessee Williams play. The trains here don't tend to horn though so I was spared that. Can you wear noise cancelling headphones?

No, I'm a rail operator. I am basically there to pilot locomotives back and forth - i.e. be the eyes of the driver in instances where they can't see what's ahead/behind. I do shunting, brake inspections, and berthing into our rail yard. It's a good job, though the shift work is tough (ironically it's the day shifts I can't stand; I love the evening and night shifts).

And the sound isn't annoying enough to need headphones. It's just a "gods damn it leave me alone" kind of noise. Like how professional chefs hate cooking at home - aside from my kid's wooden train sets I want nothing to do with trains outside of work. 😅

Anyway, I'm very anti my job at the moment because the managers reneged on a deal we made. I'm tempted to call in sick for my shift tomorrow just to make them scramble.

Damn, so many questions. Shunting and berthing sounds very physical 😅 Why do you hate the day shifts? Sorry you're finding it frustrating atm. Do you have a union? There are constant rail strikes in the UK. Did you call in sick? Hope you get a fair resolution.

I've noticed you mention your kid a few times and hope you don't mind me saying so but you sound like such a great dad. Teaching him (boy, right?) what a dinosaur is etc 💚 cute. Does he love animals too? Wooden train sets are the best.

Shunting can be very physical - as can brake inspections. Both involve tons of walking, often 4-10km a day (just walking up and down trains, making sure everything is functioning). Berthing is less intense - basically it's just setting up a road (a road in this case is a specific line of track) in the yard (making sure the points are all set in the right direction), riding with the driver to the bottom of the road, putting the handbrakes on the wagons, then cutting out the brakes and piloting the locomotives back into our servicing yard. And no I didn't call in sick - I decided it was too petty. I had today off, but I'm working all weekend.

One of the reasons I'm annoyed at them is because I've been rostered to work Christmas Day and Boxing Day for a month now, and I was looking forward to the double time, but they decided my shift was surplus to requirement. I still get paid (at the normal rate, though) and get a day in lieu for each shift, but I wanted that extra money. Plus, my partner and kid are going to visit her family on Christmas Day in the north island, and the whole reason I'm not going was because I was rostered to work and we needed the money. Now I only get to see my kid for Christmas morning and I'm missing out on double time.

And yes, I have a wee boy (three years old). He does like animals, but his current obsession is Hot Wheels and monster trucks. To be fair we haven't taken him to the zoo much this year, whereas usually we go three or four times a year. Both me and my partner have been super busy, though.

Hey everyone I’m back! I was on vacation with limited wifi so I couldn’t talk on the forums much!

Good news is I’m onto the next Veterinary semester, but just by the skin of my teeth! Did I miss anything as of late? From what I saw on social media the next unlocked wasn’t super useful for us.

Either way, I was on vacation in Europe for the first time! I’m not gonna say too much, but in Spain they had monk parakeets which were cool to see. I’m ready to be back in New England for the holidays though!

I hope you are all having a good Holiday Season!

Got a goofy little guy made (was not made by me). JUST APPRECIATE HIM
