If multiple people in one ship ever become a reality, i.e. A pilot and friends in gun turret stations, multiplayer is a must, be it private or an open server. I mean who would not want to be co-op with your mates [crew & wing men] jumping from Ross 154 to Epsilon Indi and getting attacked by pirates? Sounds exciting as hell to me. If it really gets to hot an you end up with way too many obnoxious twits, just go private server and be happy with that.

Multiplayer, private or open. Solo, when you've had enough of the world and need a bit of downtime stargazing speeding over the ring of Saturn towards Titan. :)

Edit: Who the hell clicked the forth selection? Out the air lock with no pressure suit with that one! o_O

No offense intended man, but your wording came off more then a little condescending to other's playstyles. I had to bite off a rather snippy response.

@Slawkenbergius Whew! Just wanted to be sure. Its heartening to hear there is someone to carry the flag so to say. :)

I hear ya. It wasn't meant to come across like that, I was just being factual. If you ever experienced the likes of "Goon Swam" in games, you'll know what I mean about being happy go to a private server. :) It was meant to slam anyone's playstyle.

Couldnt respond to the poll - not relevant option

I plan to play off line on my own. On line for the fun and probably as a group on line with my kids

Can I make the observation, that if you are manning one of the turrets in a large ship, you're going to be pretty bored most of the time unless your ship is in constant combat.

MP.
I'm expecting there is no big difference between SP and MP anyway.
But on the big hobs, e.g. Sol Starbase - or big Cities, there will hopefully many ppl hangin around and do this sencond live things. I also hope that the MP feeling gets pushed with minigames/housing/groupmusic .. whatever. Interactions with others will clearly be a big win for ED.

But in a far away corner I'm expecting to be allone as in SP. Mining what I call my own Asteorid. Happy to meet some MPC passing me.

Its gread that FD also implements this SP-Mode for those who wont join for the very first moment. Hopefully they join anyway once in time.

I would love to play with friends but I don't have any. So it is solo and off-line as I travel so much (they are corrolated).

You can make friends here Gustypants!:)
It seems to be a mature, friendly crowd on the forums even when they are disagreeing with each other. Of course, this might change a bit when the game is released.
I voted MP but I've had no experience playing on line with others. I have a vague notion of griefing from the posts I've read but I'm an optimist. I simply love the idea of being in space and seeing another player controlled vessels even if nothing happens. That thought alone gives a very Human depth to the game for me.
Of course, if said ship is piloted by a crazed cretin then I'm going to fry their hull, destroy the equipment, cargo and paint work and kick the escape pod in the butt as it scuttles back to the last station.
Unless they out number/class me. Then I'll be hyperspacing out.:D:eek:

I'd love to say I'll definitely exclusively play in the open, multiplayer game, but having played a few PvP type games I'm very wary. I'm a roleplayer, and as such I need valid in-game reasons behind actions e.g sworn racial enemies, alliance wars, or consensual battle etc. Not just some stranger using me as target practice who has no reason for doing so. Someone actually existing in a universe like Elite Dangerous would mean the vast majority of people would consider the consequences of everything they do. But sadly, as this is a game, there are no real life and death consequences and people act as they please. So we get the morons who just want to act like idiots and spoil other people's enjoyment because they think it's fun. I truly hope the mechanisms being implemented make such actions punishable enough to discourage these people. If the gankers and griefers find ways to exploit whatever is put in place to stop them, then I think I will revert to the solo play connected to the live server option. I guess that means I can play solo, no PvP, but still communicate with others. Not a bad option to fall back on :)

Will look to play with friends and single player. Sometimes I just like being anti social and play with myself.... i mean on my own.

I voted for both private and public servers; because of the unique opportunity to play with other players, and not knowing which way me and any friends who get the game will go!

Personally, I willl be flying in global multiplayer, as long as my I-net connection allows it.
Traditionally, I've been very much a single-player person - Sticking with the X games mainly - but of late, I've noticed that having other players as company/opposition leads to way more unpredictability and fun (e.g. star conflict, nfs racing games), and that multiplayer does not have to be the terrible trope of eve-online or wow.

So, yes. I plan to fly multiplayer. Not constantly fighting though - I would *love* to be mainly a trader/explorer in the multiplayer world, and I feel this role is something that Elite will give me far better than Star Citizen (which i've also backed, of course).

I'm struggling with the appeal of a single player environment. it seems to go against the shere potential of the original game.

The concept of Elite and becoming the best of the best naturally fits with human opponent encounters.

Those that Favour a universe of solo travel and adventure will surely miss out on the true spirit of Elite.

That said, I'm far from an expert in these matters that is why I've backed the real experts so-to-speak.

Or we will be playing it in exactly the true spirit of Elite (and Frontier and FFE), as the game was single player only. Maybe a bunch of us just want to carry on that type of journey that has served us well all this time?

Maybe some of us have experienced the 'wonder' of online multiplayer and MMO and found it spoils the experience of our game?

In all those hours playing you never had the dream/fantasy/desire you weren't playing alone? I can't speak for the developers but I am very convinced they would have included multiplayer if that was technology possible at that time. The Internet came later along with the possibility to play with others.

I would possibly still play it if it was multiplayer from start. Ofcourse if reallife allowed me.

Elite is about Space. It's a depressing and scary thought you are alone.

This x1,000,000,000

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING ruins your immersion like a twelve year old typing about animal genitalia as he flies past you in his Sidewinder. >.<

For all of you touting how amazing it will be with people, I get the distinct feeling that none of you have actually played online games. No offense, but its not nearly as endearing as folks make it out to be. There is a reason you don't see much talking in MMO's like WOW or GW2.

Don't take my word for it, I'm sure you will all see for yourselves in a year. ;) I will relish watching you all lose your faith in humanity like I did.
