Will start with multiplayer and see how I go.
If there is too much annoying behaviour I'll drop back into single.

I'll be going multiplayer

I think most people's concerns that multiplayer will somehow be a bad experience are worrying unnecessarily.

Space is pretty big so you won't all be jammed together is a small area. Unless you're in a group with friends or at a core world the chances of meeting a PC is probably small.

Human players won't be able to do anything that NPCs can't do. If you get attacked by a pirate PC how is that different that being attacked by an NPC pirate?

FD are putting anti ganking measures in place to stop higher rated players picking on lower rated players.

I assume that you'll be able to opt out of PVP and you'll never bump into anyone that isn't also non PVP.

I also think that the player base for this game is a different kettle of fish to other games. I think you'll probably get less trolls and annoying gits in the game.

Bit of both for me, I think. I voted for both. Could do without PvP and people trying to make a name for themselves, but I think it'll be rare to come across those types and, judging by what I've seen on the forum so far, it doesn't look like there'll be many of them, anyway!

My vote went for Friends-only multiplayer and playing with myself.
Erm, I mean, playing the single player experience.

Surely, I will give the public games a try after a while, but I am not too keen on it as in all the games with PvP element have been unpleasant experiences for me as I am not a competitive player and I get no satisfaction from it. Of course everyone else seems to notice it and harass me endlessly until I quit. I don't think I am doing anything that could provoke such a reaction. Unless that is the very nature of a PvP player, attack everyone on sight. :(

Of course if there was a negative impact on attacking another player, that might keep it down a bit... But then again, that is just wishful thinking as everyone will probably just point and ridicule me for even suggesting such a thing.

I'm a bit torn. When I played Frontier I always thought it would be great if all the other people I met were other players. My recent experiences with Minecraft make me feel like solo play in certain games is a bit of a dead end.

But...

I was really keen to play Borderlands online. However, when I did I discovered that it was not very social at all and in fact it was mostly anonymous people running around and completing my game for me. I kicked them out, sharpish.

So it really depends on how the multiplayer manifests. I really want a rich, sociable, co-operative experience.

My dream would be getting a group of other players together to make a combined assault on a really tricky enemy fleet.

At heart I am a single player gamer. Even when I play online with games such as WoW, Star Wars: The Old Republic etc. The reason is that I like to play at my own pace without having to wait for others or be distracted from what I am doing. (Do not get much time)

Why do I play online games as a single player? They offer a larger game canvas and scope than a single player game can with more freedom. I do from time to time group up but not often.

:)

Mostly this for me too. I'll be jumping straight into MP and probably won't ever start a SP profile. I really enjoy co-op, but don't want to be constantly having to group up in order to progress my game, as I'll be doing my own thing most of the time.

I'm hoping for a rich MP galaxy with a variety of player interactions, mostly peaceful but I wouldn't object to occasional clashes, after all if someone wants to play pirate that's fine by me so long as its in character and not just deathmatch in space. I'm pretty confident FD will get a handle on this though as we have the bounty system so its not like fugitives get a free ride, they'll have plenty of attention from police and bounty hunters.

Also the instancing mechanic should prevent the same people from killing any one person repeatedly so persistent griefing should be held in check

Both, I want to play with friends and have some awesome adventures and create my own without interruption during those busy times.

I think I start off on Single player until I find the right setup I want for the game and go to multiplayer. Then unleash my fangs.

I would love to play with friends but I don't have any. So it is solo and off-line as I travel so much (they are corrolated).

This topic is being discussed in the DDF at the moment, so it would be good for those who haven't voted yet to do so. It looks like all three modes would be popular though.

Good! For the record, I will be playing in SP (online) mode... I hope.

Seriously, someone raise a fuss about it, let us SP fans be heard! I would LOVE to play offline SP, AND SP that connects and updates with this 'evolving' universe that DB mentions.

I'll still play MP, but I REALLY, REALLY want SP as well. :D

Don't worry, the single player voice is represented. I for one don't play multiplayer games at the moment, though would be interested in giving it a go for Elite.

Playing in Frontier Elite II, I thought if the NPC were real players, this is real life and the game will reach extraordinary dimensions.

I think the rules and laws in ED will temper the ardor of kamikazes and other fools.

I play multi players in the dangerous world.

By trying to my way ...
