Sitting Duck or FSS mode

Just before I mention a concern I have (FSS) I want to say I love the exploration update already and I will be returning to ED due to the fact the new features will enable me to explore the way I want to.

That said, one thing concerns me (Being a vulnerable Explorer in a ship configured for exploration and not) PvP or PvE....

That this is DSS mode, where your ship is throttled to ZERO and then you start doing the FSS mini game which looks good and I like it.

However!

Not that I normally explore in the inhabited bubble and like to go far far away, but one thing that used to annoy me is being interdicted and on warping into a system you knew if it was coming if a ship appeared on your scanner shortly after warping in.

I don't think I need to explain any further, but will summarise.

When in DSS mode you are a sitting duck and a scanner blind one at that!

Thoughts?

Or do what players have done since 2013 while afk in open sc and turn your back at the star before using FSS, no one can interdict through star.

I did not know this? So if I warp in and point away from the star I can't be interdicted? I find that hard to believe

Your choice to throttle back. How is this any different from looking at the gal map - if someone decides to interdict you it seems likely it will kick you back to the mini-game. Doom thread is doomed.

If you park yourself with the aft end of your ship right next to the star’s drop zone, well, it’s pretty amusing and I do it regularly when hauling 700+ tons of rare goods. NPC pirates get all excited, try to get behind me and disappear into the star to take heat and emergency stop damage. If I’m still there for some reason, they often try again. Some little blub of text followed by nothing and silence. It’s a beautiful thing.

It won't be that much of a problem since almost all the bubble and most tourist spots will show all objects as "unexplored" in the navigation pane allowing a CMDR to quickly select objects.

The only time a CMDR needs to do the FSS mini-game is while in a new system nobody has been before or he is looking for a mission USS - and FDev said that those whole be easy to spot in the FSS - and as a result not requiring that much time.

Before the most recent exploration stream I was worried about that "blind sitting duck" thing, now I'm not.

But regarding PVE interdictions, since the FSS will most likely act as any other fullscreen mode which is immediately closed when an interdiction starts, it would only be a problem if NPCs could win the interdiction.

Does the FSS have to be used in supercruise? If not, and you're that paranoid about other players, drop down and FA-off boost before you use your scanner.

If they can't get between you and the stars too close drop off line. Sometimes they could get in position to engage and fail as they hit the boundary and drop off sc. If you exit h-wake at 0 throttle and just turn so your ships back is at 90 degree from star surface you are good against most npcs. If you do what most do and first fuel scoop and then come back up to the line where star can't boil you anymore and go happy afk yo probably can fuel scoop and FSS same time for ever and be safe from all interdiction, heat and fuel consumption. If player or npc can't get behind you because star, you can' be interdicted.

I share your concern.

Maybe the Devs felt some sympathy for player pirates & this is actually a stealth buff ;)

No different to when you are inspecting the system map or galaxy map. When in the bubble there shouldn't be too much need to enter the scanner.

Likewise I wonder if the complaints about infinite probes are all from combat pilots in disguise

But wouldn't this technique (twerking your exhaust in the star's corona) essentially have the star obscuring almost half your field of view when doing the FSS.... ?
