SLF loadouts for mining

SLF loadouts for mining would be a fantastic addition, particularly for larger mining ships like the Anaconda or Type-9. While it would be fantastic if NPCs could make use of them, just having the loadouts themselves would be fantastic.

Potential loadout ideas:
  • Abrasion blaster, mining laser & pulse-wave analyzer for an all-in-one build
  • Abrasion blaster, multi cannon & pulse-wave analyzer or point defence for a combat-hybrid core mining build
  • Mining laser, multi cannon & point defence for a combat-hybrid laser mining build
As the pulse-wave analyser is so power hungry, heavier duty power plants could be used on the SLFs, with increased weight. Mining fighters wouldn't need too much maneuverability anyway.

A community goal to unlock one of these loadouts, possibly for the Taipan first and then the other SLFs at a higher tier, might be a good way to go about it. Could also use it to unlock multi cannon loadouts on the Taipan and GU-97 as well as get a fixed beam loadout for the Condor, possibly using the same heavy duty power plants to fix any power issues.

Ship Launched Fighter, it’s kinda in the name… 🤔

I don’t see the need at all, unless you’re just wanting the NPC pilot to do all the work while you’re afk, you can mine everything easily in a cutter - I do! - and if you want something more manoeuvrable just take a medium ship.

The SLF could be useful for a miner flying over watch, but there no need for a ship launched miner.

And as a result, we have in type of SRV, research and military.

As soon as the average ship can hold 700 tons, I'll take your advice.

A ship mining ore and transporting ore are the same thing is nonsense. Why can't you drill for SLF and limpets to haul ore to a big ship?

And in general, my opinion that the SLF in the game are cut off. Their use by the player is reduced to 0. In combat they are mostly used by NPCs or if there is a crew. And you can easily give them a lot of useful activities. Drill, explore mega-ships, fix your big ship, etc.

That's actually a valid point!

Perhaps they could introduce a SLSE (Ship Launched Something Else 🤭), as a support unit, unable to fight, but useful for something else, like an additional mining tool, or a pulse scanner, or an exobiology scanner that tells me where the bloody Fungoida Setisis are, while I look for a place to land. 😆

Surface Recon Vehicle, the name fits both. And there might have been a touch of sarcasm in my previous comment. Obviously a Ship Launched Miner would have a different name.

You’re not going to get that much onto a SLM either.

But why? You can always get more mining lasers on your mother ship than a fighter. Even before heading into the black, when I had weapons on my cutter, I could deplete an asteroid as quickly as my collectors could clear them.

All a SLM would do is take up a slot and reduce the number of limpets I could put out, which would increase the waiting time, or reduce the cargo I can carry.

You have to stay close enough to the asteroid for the limpets, so you might as well use the mother ship.

I can do all forms of mining comfortably in a cutter, I genuinely don’t see any advantage to a ship launched miner. Much like the Mining Multi Controller, people would give it a go and then it would become another redundant module.

I always envisioned the yellow pods from Guardians of the Galaxy 1 in place of the SLF.

No one is taking away your old mining option. It's just that those who are more interested can use the same S.L.M. to mine the core.
and not only core, you can cut into the hulls of mega-ships to get to some node, etc.

Yes I agree, now a lot of drones, flying and mini-machines are used in the future, there will be no such devices, it is not profitable.

It’s not about taking away my mining options (I hate mining btw), it’s about wasting devs time making something that will just be a novelty for a short time before everyone goes back to the current method.

The only real use case is for multi crew, but that wouldn’t be any more profitable - quite possibly less so - so wouldn’t attract many users.

I don't think we can make an up-to-date assessment of who needs what.
So according to you PP2 is for the long haul? And a lot of people are doing it? And Colonization will also be massive and a lot of people will be doing it?
I know a lot of people who didn't participate in the Thargodian War in any way, but nevertheless were spent on its implementation.

Strawman away…

Interesting idea... maybe in the ED universe, these are the next generation of limpets with advanced capabilities, rather than a comparison with SLFs.

If you go with that idea then I'm not sure you'd want a PWA on any of these units, because that's your job from the command seat; and that solves the problem with supply of power. It's not like the PWA gameplay now is limited by the fact there's only one of you, nothing to stop you bazzing around the asteroids to cover more cubic feet in total and then deploying the Ship-Launched Miners to go get.

The combat hybrid is interesting for use in Haz-Res I guess and that would be an SLF but with mining lasers to fill the idle moments. Not very interesting in terms of gameplay though, you're getting a bit close to "deploy drone capabilities, go and make tea."

A Ship-Launched Mining device is of course a SLaM so maybe it's worth it just for the cool name.

...
there were a lot of such offers.

thining about this more, would love a skimmer that is ship launched for Exobiology hunt over difficult terrain...
