So is Elite an MMO or not?

I'm really not sure.

Braben sometimes seems to be pitching it as an MMO and sometimes not.

Is it a part MMO?

It's a multiplayer online for sure.

Massively? We're restricted due to peer to peer at 32 it seems.

Don't get me wrong...I love the game but i'm not sure what it is...

Single player with online multiplayer function?

Multi-player with grouping and dynamic universe?

MMO with single player option?

Any combo if the above?

What is it?

And what will they pitch it at?

It seems to be able to fit any category....so I'm unsure what it will be advertised as?

Elite is an MMO you can play with tens of thousands of other people.

Elite is a single player game you can play entirely alone.

Elite is a single player game you can also play with your mates.

It's a Metroplayer game. Play how you want. :)

What Juniper said.

Though I do think of it as being an MMO because I tend to take words literally. And it's massively multiplayer and it's online. Same as I take RPG literally (ROLE PLAYING GAME) and not necessarily the way most people take it to mean something that has D&D type mechanics.

Sarcasm based on my posting style aside, you're saying it's an MMO then. Correct?

Local connection only is peer to peer and limit is only for bubble. It's not classic instance per se, it just makes everything within radius from your ship part of local combat session (using matchmaking rules).

So in nutshell it is massive, if you play 'all'. You can meet almost everyone playing this group while flying around.

I personally call it persistent universe multiplayer game. Idea is massive or not doesn't matter, you can choose way to play it online, and it has persistent universe with background sim.

One of major modes - group 'all' - will provide massive multiplayer element, but ED also have single player and co-op online modes.

TLDR: it is MMO if you want to. It can be single player if you want to. It can be co-op if you want to.

It's an online multiplayer game where you can meet and interact with other players in a persistent universe and change it based on your actions.

Do we always need a "category" for everything?

So should and will it be pitched as an MMO is what I'm asking.

Do you think it will be pitched then as an MMO?

I think it is being pitched as an MMO generally.

Actually debate over, from the new website:

Head for the stars, take a ship and trade, bounty-hunt, pirate or assassinate your way across the galaxy in this massively multiplayer online space adventure.

Sadly, games fall into categories.

The category it will be placed in, is my question.

The press will most likely call it a MMO in the end. Even if that misrepresents the game since it doesn't really follow the "formula" of a "traditional MMO" in terms of gameplay.

Thanks.

It is an MMO then....all I wanted to know. :)

The Elite series has never been one to be easily slotted into categories.

It's one of those games known for creating genres and genre conventions rather than conforming to them.
