So is Elite an MMO or not?

I think you have to decide how you define an MMO, because for me we all have a different definition. What are the characteristics you expect to be there? Then compare to the features ED has.

eg You quote the instance limit. So for you an MMO should have all the players on line in the same instance. So by that definition its not an MMO.

For me its a hybrid MMO and I am looking to see how this works particularly around griefing.

I'm really not sure.

Braben sometimes seems to be pitching it as an MMO and sometimes not.

Is it a part MMO?

It's a multiplayer online for sure.

Massively? We're restricted due to peer to peer at 32 it seems.

Don't get me wrong...I love the game but i'm not sure what it is...

Single player with online multiplayer function?

Multi-player with grouping and dynamic universe?

MMO with single player option?

Any combo if the above?

What is it?

And what will they pitch it at?

It seems to be able to fit any category....so I'm unsure what it will be advertised as?

I believe a hybrid is as accurate as you can describe it (depending on your definitions - massive & multiplayer).
It's most certainly massive and multiplayer. Massively Multiplayer is really the contentious issue.
I would consider it an MMO as you could eventually meet and interact with each and every other player even with island limitations. You just can't meet and interact with everyone at the same time.

it' an MMO - you play all on one server just never see everybody at once.

but it's new generation of MMO, so probably needs a little explanation - you can meet anyone from the game universe but not meet all same time.

This.

By pure definition it is massive, multiplayer and online and therefore meets the essential criteria for being an MMO. It's certainly an MMO as far as I'm concerned. However a very large proportion of online gamers would argue that in addition to those essential core criteria an MMO is widely expected to have other qualities, and generally this boils down to how many players can duke it out in the one place at the one time.

If part of someone's definition is a minimum number of, say, 50 players in an instance simultaneously then no, ED is not an MMO as far as they are concerned, and that's perfectly fine. There is no right or wrong here because there is no precise objective definition.

"Hybrid MMO" is being bandied about a lot, but it is an equally undefined term.
