So is Elite an MMO or not?

The Elite series has never been one to be easily slotted into categories.

It's one of those games known for creating genres and genre conventions rather than conforming to them.

But it gets forced into an undersized box and bulges out, much like the 84 version.

I'm really not sure.

Braben sometimes seems to be pitching it as an MMO and sometimes not.

Is it a part MMO?

It's a multiplayer online for sure.

Massively? We're restricted due to peer to peer at 32 it seems.

Don't get me wrong...I love the game but i'm not sure what it is...

Single player with online multiplayer function?

Multi-player with grouping and dynamic universe?

MMO with single player option?

Any combo if the above?

What is it?

And what will they pitch it at?

It seems to be able to fit any category....so I'm unsure what it will be advertised as?

Nothing to add to the conversation besides:

Your name reminded me of that.

I wouldn't call most MMOs defining themselves as MMOs.

Personally, I'd define an MMO as a game meeting the following basic criteria:

- A perstistent game world which mandatorily requires:
- Single shard.
- No parallel instancing.

So according to my definition, ED doesn't offer the option to be played as an MMO. Of course I wouldn't call WoW an MMO by any means - it's a multi server theme park with a multiplayer lobby on each server. The only game coming close to an MMO is eve imho.

ED not being an MMO is not necessarily a bad thing, though.

So... you're saying EVE is the only true MMO?

For me MMO must meet the following criteria:

MASSIVE
MULTIPLAYER
ONLINE.

What does it spell?

ONLINE isn't in question.

MULTIPLAYER isn't either.

MASSIVE...well, depends on what you mean? Massive game world? E: D has the biggest one of those ever attempted in a computer game. Massive number of players? Potentially millions on E: D. Millions on WoW too. Massive number of players you can see on your screen and talk to? E: D only has up to 31 of those at any given time (although we've yet to see how comms will actually work).

They're all still connected to the same universe though and that instancing thing only really comes into play in systems where we go above that magic number, mainly the busy systems like Sol or whatever trade hubs or events throw up. I still think it's pretty damned massive. Massive amounts of players WILL be playing in the same universe whether or not they actually see each other.

It is not an MMO in the strictest traditional sense, but the background simulation take over at that point so, welcome to the hybrid. Now take your seats. :p

It isn't - but it's the game coming closest to it.

Now considering your criteria: I'd hardly call 32 people in the same instance massive by any means.
A game that allows people to play single player online to bypass all possible threats may call itself online and multiplayer, but massive?

Arma and mods are more massive than that and I hardly remember anyone calling it an MMO.

It's a singleplayer game with coop options and an optional pvp lobby more or less seamlessly integrated into the game.

Again - I'm not saying that's bad thing - blob fights in eve are the most mind-numbing and stupid things available on PC you can find.

I recall an interview with David Braben where he said that it is an MMO.

I would not qualify it an MMO because you aren't ever in contact with a massive amount of players at once. Though it does have some MMOish qualities which make me much slightly less bothered compared to the vast swarm of games that brand themselves MMOs which have absolutely nothing to do with MMOs in the least. (most F2P games seem to do this). It's one of my peevepets.

Frontier says it's an MMO.

I WIN! :p

I think that problems of definition will always muddy the water. If the definition of MMO is only that the game is massive, multiplayer and online, then MMO does capture it in some way. But that's not the end of the story.

I think that Juniper's initial response actually sums up what it will be quite well, because it captures the fact that ED is doing a new take on a multiplayer environment that simultaneously also allows group and single-player options to co-exists alongside a straight multiplayer option.

It is also doing a new take on the sandbox concept, where both game structure and game mechanics influence the player experience you will have.

So trying to put it into a limited definition is probably selling it short

I agree with those that say it's most likely to be advertised as an MMO, but forumites tend to prefer "flexiplayer" to indicate the ability to choose how multiplayer you want your experience to be.

Frankly, the "massive" aspects are more like a MMORTS, while the role-playing aspects are closer to a small team RPG. Hence inventing a word to emphasise the flexibility :)

Sarcasm based on my posting style aside, you're saying it's an MMO then. Correct?

I'm saying it can be. It can also be other things too. As others have said, classifying it as such is fine, but it sells it way short.

Sarcasm wasn't intended. Apologies if you took it as that. :(

This kind of highlights the current evolution of online games. Sometimes I feel current MMOs, using World of Warcraft as a great example has pushed traditional MMOs to evolve from virtual worlds into interactive chat rooms. The term "MMO" itself now represents games that barely resemble the first games that coined such a term. The added "RPG" has been dropped from MMO(RPG) to highlight this change.

Games like Star Citizen, Shroud of the Avatar and Elite: Dangerous are all incorporating different elements of MMOs, virtual worlds, online games, etc. and is giving your more flexibility.

It's as if you can play an entirely single-player game and yet have the world change to reflect the apparent presence of other players. It creates persistence and suddenly your single-player games have a little real-world meaning.

It's not a traditional MMO... a new breed established by Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, inspired by Dark Souls and Guild Wars.

A meta-online game? The larger universe elements are influenced by the player base as though it was an MMO, but you play it as though it was a dynamic multiplayer game.

Do you think it will be pitched then as an MMO?

Not sure how it will be pitched in that regard - probably the message will be more focused in what the player can expect to experience than in game genre.

ED is an MMO with a "post MMO" (compared to WoW & company) design. Meaning that while the context (game universe) is affected by the gamers, your direct playing interaction may not, accord to your preferences. Which is a bit the opposite of classical MMO (players have little to no impact on environment, mandatory / regulated player interaction).
