So let me get this straight...

I'm coming back after a long break. After dumping around 1400 hours in to Elite, I hung it up back when they killed community goals as there was nothing to do in Open. With news of Odyssey starting to come out I decided to return to see how it's shaping up. Needless to say, after reading much of the recent news I am confused about space-legs. I want to make sure that I'm not missing anything here...

  • Frontier is adding space legs so you can walk... instead of drive... around planets.
  • All of the ship command bridges exist, but you can't get up and walk around in them.
  • Instead of cleaning up the command decks so you can walk around in them, they're focusing their staff on making a bunch of brand new environments like space-cafes, social hubs.
  • There is no VR support for finally being able to walk around, despite the fact that numerous VR FPS games have already been created demonstrating a variety of approaches to implementation.

I'm just gonna say it... I spent most of my time away from Elite hanging out over at that Star Citizen thing and Frontier... let me tell you... you don't want to start looking to CIG for inspiration. Frontier you are far more cogent and intelligent than that. With luck there is just some part of the roadmap (feeling triggered) that I don't understand and I can be enlightened?
I hope this message doesn't come off as ill-mannered. I should balance this by saying that the footage of Odyssey does look STUNNING. And it felt very good to slide back in to my Krait MKII commanders chair (30K, you can't hurt me anymore!) But... there's an espresso machine... and I have dream.

that just about sums it up.

oh yeah, and the transition from ship to legs is a "teleport". Not even attempting to give a lore reason. just that's how it is.

it's going to be some kind of COD/NMS hybrid clone with no VR.

...and Fleet Carriers bring compelled gameplay. Once you have a fleet carrier, FDev punishes you for not playing regularly.

enjoy.

don't forget to buy some ARX.

problems:
1. shallow gameplay loops where activities dont impact the game state to any degree that changes the gameplay for players (even the player in question).
2. Economy that doesn't reflect player activity in a way that encourages participation as a structured organized mechanic ...allowing the game to feedback on player activity to generate dynamic content that impacts all players.
3. Empty systems that serve no purpose.
4. travelling is devoid of gameplay and is nothing more than a time sink
5. npc ai is predictable and weak unless it cheats.

Fdev Solution:
1. Space legs.
2. No VR (for that armstrong moment.... man the irony cracks me up).
3. adding environments that allow you to do the same things you can do in the existing ones but with different eye candy and plants
4. Eliminate narrative / creative content (galnet).
5. Add mobile player bases but provide little to no incentive for anyone not owning one to use them

I mean, it all seems pretty logical and sound to me. Because this is the Problems and Solutions list according to Fdev

Problems:
1. Want more money
2. Dont want to spend money

Solution:
1. Attach things to existing game to attract purchases
2. deliver minimally viable solutions that require minimal to no ongoing support
3. something...something....dark side

Theres no anti gravity tech in ED you can not walk in space with out an object spinning ,
you can only float in ED universe in ships and space. and static stations..

So walkng would require them to change all the ships flight decks to a magnetic material and give you magnetic boots or change lore to add anti gravity or gravity generators items to all ships...
Stations in ED are spinning so you could actual walk... But if you were ever to break free and go weight less you would take a big hit when landing again...
When you land at stations the ship uses anti spin systems to allow you to land.. Your also clamped in place on landing...

I'd say the big problem here is .... we don't know yet.

Walking in ships? We don't know (despite claims).
VR? They have expressly said they are looking at it, we don't know when/if it might come.

Also we've seen almost nothing.

We don't know.

Welcome back Vanilla Ice man.

To be fair, the majority of what you have read and surmised in your post, is hearsay, conjecture, and Gobshytology of the highest degree.

I won't go into detail, as I am going to presume you have your own mind, and can draw your own conclusions from looking at the forum threads, the forum hysteria, the proper online videos and articles, and hopefully not from some of the pseudo-influenza video berks who can make up whatever they choose.

I expect I'll get some white knight snipes for my post, but that says all you need to know really. Draw your own conclusions from the evidence, not the conjecture, and you'll find very little is known right now, so it's time to make that coffee, and wait around for some news from FD I guess.

Cheers mate,
The Hat :)

I nearly forgot to say - word to your mother. I hope she is well.

Is it ?, that's good news nothing worse than having to walk through the same identical setting every time. Like the stations in NMS gets old quick.

Teleports a sensible move, I'd also have been OK with futurama travel tubes or telepresence people drones.

sub topic
Adding stargates to the game was the best thing they did.. cut out all the walking and flying repeative crap but you still can't go from planet to fleet carrrier via stargate...or did they fix that.. (goes to boot the game, Yes the did woot the FC has a star gate build option.)

The same way as with spaceships? It's not as if anything is balanced in any way so who cares.
