If you don't want to do multi-player, then nothing changes in your world. It isn't mandatory and nothing in single player mode changes (save the boxing of chat messages) .
You are correct, you don’t have to use them. Unfortunately however you have no choice but to pay for them, and that’s what really annoying.
£40 for a base game and 3 expansions that hold no interest is what I’d wager is the problem. It's not whining

I have a LTP so I get the content regardless. I have no interest in MC but I don’t begrudge it being included. I don’t necessarily like where it takes the game, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it as I just wont use it. But it’s obvious some people do take issue. £40 for landing on planets and a full season is good value, £40 for landing on planets and 4 expansions that hold no interest isn't. That’s likely why people get annoyed when they feel like they are not getting value.
Hopefully they change the season model next year so people can buy the content they want rather than having content that holds no interest. That way if you don’t like an update, you don’t buy it and don’t complain about it.

I'm not sure If I'll be using multi crew (not enough friends https://forums.frontier.co.uk/images/icons/vbposticons/icon7.gif ), but other people using it wont spoil my fun - it's not compulsory, I can still play the way I have always played.
I like the idea that you can put out a request to be a crew member for anyone who is interested - might give that a go, could be fun - as long as you can stipulate what type of drinks you expect on board.
The new camera and character creator look great.
If you don't like the sound of a feature don't use it, but give it a go before writing it off, you never know you may enjoy it.

I may have used "arcade" wrongly. I meant action + giving priority to ease of use and immediate entertainment.
And If the perception was that I was lashing out like a etc. I'm sorry, I'm simply saying that it seems that ED is going that way and I understand why from a market point of view. I'm obviously also hinting that I'm not part of that market (for this game I mean).
Well, I still have hopes that the game will meet at least some of my wishes, but you may be right. I'll wait and test the 2.3 release before, though.
