So when are the console servers closing?

I'll be honest, I just don't have the discretionary funds for a gaming PC, what with real life, rent, clothing, gas prices, kids, college, inflation, etc. That's why I can only afford an Xbox Series X.

In the past 22 months, I've put over 2000 hours into Elite, but it's probably more because there was that time around the fleet carrier launch when the time stopped tracking.

So if now Odyssey isn't coming to consoles... that means that eventually consoles are going to be completely locked out of Elite.

I'll be honest, I was really looking forward to Odyssey. The idea of adding a FPS to an already-excellent vehicular game was breathtaking, and to those PC players out there, I'm incredibly jealous. But this is also scribbling on the wall that eventually (probably soon) that consoles won't be able to connect to the game servers at all.

When is that going to be? If Elite is ending for us, I need to start doing that one thing that FDev seems to NOT want us to do: grind Elite Combat. But now I have no choice. I was working along steadily, I'm not really into combat especially but I'm on the verge of Dangerous, and I'd really like that 225th achievement and finish this before I mothball the 3 carriers on my several accounts and wave goodbye to my beloved T-9.

Oh, and if we're REALLY going to be screwed over, could you at least un-nerf the Thargoid Scouts so that they're Elite again? That way I might actually have a chance.

O7, Commanders... except you, FDev. This really feels like a giant middle finger. I'm really hoping that some sort of reconsideration takes place.

It's a P2P game, the instancing is the only thing that's separate. I think the consoles still use the same servers as everyone else. I could be wrong 🤷‍♂️

The servers arn't closing anytime soon. It's just in permanent Maintenance Mode. From what I understand, the galnet news, space bases CGs, the existing BGS, powerplay, etc will probably continue as is but you won't be getting any new ships, srvs, modules or new missions types that Odyssey players will be getting. See the SRV for an example (that could have been included in Horizons/Consoles but it's an Odyssey exclusive).

There only will be updates to the console, if there's a change to made to the Background Simulation for Odyssey, which would break Horizons/Consoles (That's what they mean by Critical patches). But that's it.

Sorry.

This is exactly what we want to know - I too am yet to get my combat Elite (got the other two) and would like to get triple Elite but am unwilling to commit if FDev throw us even further under the bus.

I mean they use AWS which easily scales so they can presumably keep the cost to the absolute minimum but right now I wouldn't trust FDev to run a bath.

Read above

Exactly. No statements have been made about when the game will no longer be playable on console. All that's been said is we've seen our last new content update.
And, they *must have known the two questions that would be asked: 1) Can we transfer to PC? 2) How long will the consoles be supported? Unless I've missed something (and I am working right now so that is possible) they have dealt with both questions in the same way the dealt with the whole console question since Odyssey launch.

I mean I would love to assume consoles will be playable for years to come but I don't trust FDev enough to give them the benefit of the doubt.

A little perspective... I've played 2000+ hours. 18 months is over 15,000 hours (closer to 16,000 hours).

I've spent around 12% of my time over the past 22 months playing Elite. I'm not the only one. There's no way they can say there isn't a devoted fan base. Again, huge middle finger.

That's what we BELIEVE to be true, but I've stopped assuming anything about what FDev is planning. Bottom line, I'm expecting a server shutdown when Odyssey finally reaches a point where there's too much that Horizons can't do in order to keep up with the lore that FDev mentioned.

It's coming. Critical patches for now, but they won't last forever. FDev will eventually get sick of supporting the consoles.

Damn, I love this game. I only wish FDev loved it as much as we do.

FDev has traditionally made no statements at ALL until decisions have been made, locked in, and about to be implemented. I think we deserve a heads-up on this.

Horizons is running an Odyssey compatibility build. I'm assuming that without future development, they'll stop making it compatible, and therefore kill the console community.

Use compromised nav beacons. They work much better
Yeah, that's what I'm doing.

I'm not great at combat, tbh. I've been using haz sites, but it's still slow going.

I'm firing my pilot immediately. Sorry, dude, you've been a cool wingman.

It's still keeping going and TBH if you get your FPS kicks in other games like I do already and you play Elite to fly spaceships, this is probably as good as it'll get anyway.
And that's good enough for me, tbh. I'd like Odyssey, but I don't NEED it to enjoy Elite. I can't miss what I don't have.

I would miss Horizons.

For those naysayers out there, I should point out the following:

"we have felt it necessary to make this difficult decision in order to allow us to bring in content and features in the way that we felt was best for the overall Elite Dangerous experience."

FDev post. 6 months ago. This is looking familiar.

"We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase."

I would assume this fall, or early next year. Frontier makes their decisions according to balance sheets and statistics, so I think they'll wait until active player numbers dwindle more on consoles so the outrage will not be as great. It's simply delusional to think that a service-based game that's not updated anymore, and uses a separate codebase to the "active one", will be running indefinitely. As they did with the Mac client, they will shut down consoles soon.

As the BGS servers are shared with the PC Odyssey version, as long as they keep patching the console version to be compatible (that's the critical patches they meant), then Elite will still exist on the consoles.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY DISAGREE THAT THIS IS ONLY AN XBOX ISSUE. At the VERY least, it affects PS as well.

This is an issue which affects the community at large. This should not have been moved out of the main forum.

FDev is already marginalizing the console community even further.

Sadly, this is my conclusion as well.
