So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

I think that is the point of the article. It's not the first time Imperial Citizen is critical about her.

The Imperial Herald seem more friendly aligned.

Well spotted.

There is a little bit of 'retroactive' updating going on, for various reasons lots of things got delayed by several months.

Cheers,

Drew.

Who goes looking....

So anyone aligned with the Dark Wheel before going out looking?

Seems like Drew likes the idea.... ;-)

https://twitter.com/jezwright/status/764196485886017536

and...can't harm to be aligned before going out?

And thinking about the functionality from the start, you can hide stations - I have always had access to Jameson's but those who didn't qualify by rank or beta access couldn't....

So if you're not aligned you might miss a station on the map...?

I'm enjoying poking around out in the Rift, but mainly because I like exploring. I can virtually guarantee everyone here that there is no Big Mystery that has been waiting to be solved for 2 years out there.

Remember, Drew whatshisname was just a fanboy writing fan fiction 2 years ago. FD might have thrown him a bone back in 2014 as a little Easter Egg, maybe made sure one or two systems were hand-generated to be a little odd, but nothing beyond that. The game engine couldn't support much else.

So, anyone expecting a big payoff for some awesome discovery of a "solution" to an intricate mystery is going to be sorely disappointed, unless FD have added a whole pile of material in conjunction with Drew recently.

Drew is playing this Salome character now in-game, apparently, dropping a whole pile of vacuous platitudes about exploration that are supposed to sound deep and inspiring, but actually read like a 14 year old Dungeons & Dragons game master's narrative. It's kind of sad.

Sure, I want there to be a grand and very clever mystery that is 2 years old that's just waiting out there there to be discovered and solved. But my guess, based on how badly botched the original Unknown Artefact clues were (they weren't even *there* until the patch...), my guess is that there IS no real mystery that is from over a year *earlier* in the game's development. It's just a        Easter egg that is going to be hugely disappointing to everyone who has sunk hundreds of hours into the quest to "solve" it (i.e. stumble blindly on some random system or two in the outer arm beyond the Rift).

I don't blame Drew for trying to drum up interest like a good fanboy. And good on him, it got him the gig to be the official writer for the game (which didn't *have* one before? - lol). But unless FD has added a pile of good content to the mystery recently, my guess is there is barely anything to really discover. And remember, *good* mysteries can be fully solved by deduction - just ask Sherlock Holmes. They don't require hundreds of hours of random guessing in the vague general direction of the right answer.

Welcome to the thread hhiram. None of us know exactly what out in the Formidine Rift ... if anything at all. Honestly that isn't important. Most of us working on this mystery are invested in it as much for the sense of community as we are for the potential of solving the mystery.

Thanks for expressing your opinions regarding the 'Salome character'. I truly doubt that the in-game player operating under that name is actually Drew ... I base that on the fact the Drew has said that it isn't him. The person playing as Salome is simply a very well-informed player.

I don't think I'll be disappointed at whatever the 'Easter egg' turns out to be. I'm not looking for anything 'Earth shattering'. It could be a simply thing like a line of text in a planet discription that turn out to be a joke. I'd be happy with that.

I would like to ask you why you feel the need to come here to try and spoil other people's enjoyment in Elite: Dangerous. Has the game become such a bitter disappointment to you that simply seeing other people actually loving the game and enjoying it is so infuriating that you feel a need to inject venom into the conversation to 'poison the well' as it were?

Hhmm.. May as well do this when I head back from Jaques. I need to do some upgrading angway, may as well do some dark sheel missions too...

Z...

I'm allied and just as lost as everyone else.

try looking on the star map, but limit the search on economies (or population) and then look for any star systems showing near the rift (or my theory in the heart nebula).

If anything shows up look for a station in the system map.....

Actually that Twitter post has nothing to do about being allied with 'The Dark Wheel' it simply postulates 'Who goes looking....so if the Dark Wheel go looking?'. I personally think that the Formidine Rift is less a riddle to be solved then it is a narrative to engage in. We're participating in a story ... writing ourselves into the gaps between the lines that Drew has penned for us. Maybe The Dark Wheel play a role here and will become a part of that narrative.

Doesn't that work regardless of Reputation status?

See below - ranks is answered and minor factions is not....

5) Are there any in-game requirements (minor faction reputation, certain ship type, pilot quality, carrying a certain rare good as cargo, etc.) for finding what is hidden in or past the Rift, or could anyone do it as long as they have the means to find their way to it?
No rank requirements of any kind. I kind of hope a single lone-wolf player figures it all out. :)

See below - The Dark Wheel seems to have been specifically pointed out

16) Would completing the "Obfuscated in the Outer Rim" and similar special missions involving or mentioning the Dark Wheel provide clues to your Formidine Rift mystery? Or are they separate from it?
The Dark Wheel have their part to play.

So in terms of hidden worlds/stations - Can't remember but Gamma may have hidden Founders World - but as I said as a beta backer I had access anyway..

"It is possible to find the rift and what it contains today (in fact, since Gamma back in 2014). However, at this point it's unlikely you would recognize it for what it is, though it is becoming clearer day by day."

Try looking for Jamesons Dock if you're not Elite or a Beta backer.... they've always been able to hide stuff on map based on requirements...

Salomé isn't being played by me. I don't have the time!

And she isn't the only 'special' NPC out there... ;)

As for the content... It's multi-faceted, multi-linked as described in my blog. The original mystery has been there since gamma, but we have been developing more as the game itself becomes more sophisticated. Remember that player actions are shaping the story. The fact that many CMDRs have been searching the Rift has already had an impact...

Cheers,

Drew.

Speaking of factions, MetaDrive inc. (recently featured in galnet), are supposedly based in Chi Orionis and looking for investments for research into new hyperdrive tech. I had a look in the Galmap, but did not see them as an actual faction in system. I did notice Earth defense fleet had a presence, and remembered it from your SIG and galnet.

I wanted to ask if EDF would be backing MetaDrive inc? I may be interested in making an investment myself, but wish to learn more about them first. I'm not sure if they are a minor faction, or an actual company that requires aid from players to get up and running? Are we able to give them credits now or are we waiting for a CG?

I am instantly suspicious of any "shady organizations" that pop up, but the thought of new hyperdrive tech and the hint of research into Meta-Alloys definitely piqued my interest. Does anyone have any information regarding MetaDrive inc?

Hello Drew,

I was wondering if any of these "special" npc's are also accessible to Xbox players? I would guess Salomé is strictly on PC, but at the mention of others I am hoping that there is something similar for the console versions of ED.

To be honest, my role in EDF is very minor. The Earth Expeditionary Fleet was setup to allow folks like me to maintain Federation connections while out exploring the galaxy. I had no idea that EDF had a presence in Chi Orionis and I have no info at all on MetaDrive inc. I'll have to ask some of the fleet members who are back in the bubble.

Oh. Oh no! Does this mean that [alien] think we are invading? :O

What if by turning in exploration data we are helping the major powers and other shady organizations with their own searching? We are well aware we are not the only ones trying to solve this mystery, should we start considering where we turn in our exploration data?

Thanks for that, looking up on Inara gives no info and does not say EDF has a presence out there so now I'm second guessing myself haha. Not to worry, I shall have another look when I'm back online. I wanted to go check the system out today but got distracted doing some engineer stuff.

Looking at that Galnet article I was struck by this:

Despite the GFT's report, some commentators blame the downturn on the London Treaty, which was signed by the galaxy's three major powers in 3278 following the introduction of the frame shift drive. The treaty enforces strict tonnage limitations for capital ships, and was aimed at preventing an arms race, but in recent years it has come to be perceived as a barrier to economic development.

I'd like to know more about this 'London Treaty'. It sounds like this treaty is the reason why capital ships' use a different technology for hyperspace travel. Plus the name London Treaty. London was one of the places the Kahina visited during her trip to Sol and Prism's tantalum export has deep ties to the FSD industry. Grabbing some tinfoil.

Wow that's a polite reply Jaiotu, my initial response was a lot more confrontational.

Hhiram, that sort of attitude may be acceptable in the chaotic other threads of this forum, but this thread is a respectable, polite environment where we don't verbally attack people, their ideas and their efforts. Enjoy the rift mystery on your own or go grief some more newbies.

With everyone screaming "Shut up and take my money", I would laugh my socks off it it was a scam.

"We need to get rich!"
"Well, let's make a start-up company and say we have a new FTl drive that will half travel times. Commanders will come running with millions, we give ourselves huge salaries, squirrel away the research money, then after six months, claim that it was either a bust, or that some secret Fed types came and took our research data and closed us down."

Imagine the sheer wrath this would incur, though!

Alternatively... military hyperdrives might be good for the game: Increased range to keep the combat jocks who don't like travelling to conflict zones happier, yet entirely useless for exploration, due to specialised fuel. Make them cost ten times the price of a normal drive with expensive fuel too and it would act as a decent way to get some cash out of the player's hands.
