Newcomer / Intro Soooo frustrated!

The welcome mission appears in your communications UI - it does not appear in the Missions Board. Open your comms panel and look for the tab with three lines (2nd from right) and the messages appear in there.

You can get it in any mode, Solo, Open or PG.

Wow, thanks, I found it in my messages and just completed it. Oh well, it's a start. Really appreciate you helping out such a newb.

That's the thing about this newcomers forum, we help everyone who is struggling, no matter what the issue, and no matter how trivial it may be, we all started out the same way. It's actually good to give back .

It's a bit quieter and more level headed than a lot of other places on the forums. Most of the experienced people are here because they want to help rather than they just stumbled across the thread whilst browsing, it's the same with the other subforums like exploration. :)

As one not too far out of Newbie-ism I want to thank all you Ladies (if there are any) and gentlemen (no fighting words intended) for ALL the helpful tips you have given. I plan to put this thread, along with the other helpful threads, on my list to pass on to any NEW commanders I come in contact with.

My only tip, is IF your having trouble manually landing, Make sure the little red ball is nested in the blue basket and go slow.

Cheers ...

Chief

For what it's worth, I actually competed a real mission today, I delivered 4 cases of wine to a station (and had to plot a course) - so I guess that makes me some kind of intergalactic booze delivery service, but I'll take it. Got about $100k. PROGRESS!! Thanks for the help, and I posted this for any other newbies who are feeling hopeless like I was. I watched a lot of vids, read these forums, did more training missions. Still a lot to learn, but ONWARD!

Excellent news, Mr. Hawk! You are launched, albeit as a delivery driver but there is no shame in that. I am still making quite serious money out of running legal cargo between stations and have never even fitted a weapon let alone fired one (though I am just starting to branch out as a bus driver). Each to their own, of course, and maybe you will find happiness as a gun-slinger or a miner or an explorer or, at times, all three. The point is if you can make 100k running booze then you can make millions doing whatever you want.

I posted this as a reply in another thread but not sure anyone will see it there.

I can't do ANY of these things! This is the craziest game I've ever played!
I've played a lot of games over the years, but I've never seen anything like this. Who would make a game where you can't even get started?! I can't take any missions, I don't qualify. I can't accept anything in the lounge, I don't qualify. I don't have enough space to trade or mine anything worthwhile in my Sidewinder.
I've done all the training and now I'm starting and have been to about 5 different "places" and either I don't qualify or I can't get to the locations necessary ('Boom' missions), too far, don't have enough fuel.

What the hell am I missing here? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I totally here you!

Because I had friends who felt the same way I made this well received How To Play Elite video where I run through everything from scratch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyII7yw2sN0

I then go through everything again with a friend in my longplay series, Two Guys in Space:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmU85lIyx9C-jwaNxvNcnrNklhLTCAA6J

And I've also made some other new player how too videos which you can find on my channel

I hope those help!!!

Peace Out,

TGS Grey

I decided to have a watch and I have to give you rep for that. Concise, clear and well presented definitely a very good intro for a brand-new player starting in Horizons and using an XBox controller. Someone using vanilla Elite and other control methods would still benefit from watching it before their first flight.

Good job [up]

Awesome news, that's basically how I got started. Once I got my first delivery out of the way it just kept getting easier for each one. I'm 50 hours in now and I have my cobra upgrades to almost all grade A components just doing deliveries. I did get blown up once by a pirate, decided to turn and fight and didn't realize I was way outgunned until it was to late. Thankfully this forum drilled it into my head to never fly without a rebuy.

When I started with Sidewinder i did some small time trade runs, and then selected one system as my homebase and started to have some reputation there, soon I could get mission board missions, and after some work I got enough money for Cobra MKIII. And that was nice ship, got a lot of work done with it untill I got enough for ASP. Just figure out your own strategy, this game does not hold your hand, it is you against big universe. Now I save for Anaconda, and fly Python, as I like multipurpose ships with decent jump range, others like pure trade ships, or pure combat ships, for me multipurpose ship is nice, something with decent space for doing haul missions, but enough teeth to bite at least npc's. But there is no "right" playing style, figure out which is fun to you and do it. Btw. Sidewinder is surprisingly decent ship when you upgrade it :)

Hi and welcome, nice first post.

Anything we other players can try to help with there or just wanted to vent? :D

I admire your positive attitude but the smiley makes me wonder if you really mean it: maybe tragrun has a point or something to add: When I was mostly harmless at this forum, I was still very, very, very frustrated by the game, but now i git-used-to-it

I took Alex's "big grin" smiley to be sort of good-humoured sympathy and understanding over someone "having a vent". You know Alex is always helpful.

BTW - I'm very glad to see that you seem to have got past your frustration stages and are still with us and enjoying yourself. Kudos for persevering Pipo.

Thanks Chief. But uhhh...what does "reped" mean?

And yes, I was venting when I started this, but I've got pretty thick skin so don't mind if folks give me (y'know, within reason!)

Bought an Adder today, hope I can also do some shooting with it, I outfitted a kill warrant scanner on it. After I figure out how to use it, and about fire groups in general. Yeah, I think I touched on the KWS in a training vid.

Now I'm off to watch Greylock's vids. Thanks all.

With a KWS, be careful. All it does is increase the payment for a kill, plus give you bounties when in anarchy space. If a NPC is clean in the local system, but the KWS says he has a bounty, shooting him will make you wanted.

Bottom left of posts that aren't yours is a link that say "Rep". Clicking that adds one reputation point to their forum account. You will also get a notification every time someone gives you one.

Cool thanks, I just reped you.

Ouch, didn't know that about the KWS. How do I know if the NPC is clean in the local system?

A normal passive scan is all you need. All that means is just being within the range of your ships sensors and having your ship pointed at the NPC. Below the NPC name on the left of your screen should say "scanning..." until it's complete and will either say "Clean" or "Wanted". Unless you are in anarchy space, then everyone is "lawless".
