Space Legs: Completely Missed the Point

There's a reason Armstrong's first step is remembered more than them actually landing on the moon, which was a far more monumental feat when you think about it.
I posted an article containing an interview with Neil Armstrong about the "Armstrong moment" on the forum... The replies that came were that they preferred The Yamiks' version...

I agree with this post 100%.

The goal was to increase immersion by showing that you are not your ship.
They were successful by just creating the ability to walk next to your ship but missed the immersion point completely.

The "Armstrong moment" moment is actually a menu.
FPS game is nice but it's not a top priority and not what a pilot needs to do.

Walking in your ship - yes.
EVA - I'll take some of that.

But what we got is a separate game mode with a menu transitioning between the modes - no thank you - that's not the immersion I was looking for.

I can hate on SC as much as I want - they are scammers in my books - but at least they understand what players really want.

I'm sure most players are holding out for a finished game.
My friend (I know, the way to demonstrate absolute proof today) tried it just this week. He just doesn't understand how anyone can cite SC as an example of what EDO should achieve and thinks EDO, for all its bugs, is still way more a finished product.

I still feel dirty when a topic swings to SC though. It just feels so pointless.

Ahh, that's better.

And they will hold out for a long time and be disappointed to my honest opinion.
The reality is that space games are really in the dumps now but so called "leaders" in the genera are complete trash

I actually think both interiors and EVA game play could still be added in future. What I strongly disagree with is the suggestion that Elite would have an expansion that allows us to walk without having any kind of on foot combat as a major part of that expansion. Elite is as much about combat as any of its other features. Combat in Elite is one of its primary features and has been consistently part of its content.

To suggest that somehow that should have been ignored as part of an expansion giving us legs has no basis in reality nor consistency. It's just what they wanted. Which is fine, because we all have the option to buy things we want.

Heh, well it would have been strange if they hadn't added on foot combat features as a component of Odyssey. I think the issue some people have is that there is too much focus on that, not enough focus on other activities.

But its hard to tell, so many people having different complaints with Odyssey.

And here I am, just waiting until I can eventually play it. Today daughter is suggesting i ask for a new mobile phone for my birthday. I'm saying, no no no, graphics card first! I can live with my 5 year old phone a bit longer!

The FPS is glorious.. oh wait, I mean FPS not FPS.. damnit, frame rate :D

RTX 3090, i9 9900k, 13 FPS looking at a small settlement that had NO npc's present and was powered down.
Glorious!

Strangely, once I had powered it up and skimmers where flying around and everything lit up, the FPS was 90. Go figure!

The FPS (First person shooter) is mediocre at best, the atmosphere can be quite cool, but not at 10fps.

Have you tried installing it on an SSD?

Oh, wait, this is ED, not Star Citizen :D

My issue is more like it's too light and unbalanced. Also the whole content island. Concourse are glorified mission/multiplayer hub, and ground mission are glorified FPS "maps".
If you remove the entire horizon/vanilla game, you would still be able to play it. Just use apex instead.

It's cheap. Not going to lie I'm a bit disappointed. I expected a new life into stations and settlements, like xenobiology have added more stuff for explo, and instead we have something slapped on top of the existing stuff, and not a part of it.

The whole bugs and performances is the priority though.

The fact so many cannot play it (or it's too sluggish) is the one thing I'm most disappointed by. It runs OK on my machine but it should be silky smooth. It should be OK for anyone on the min specs to enjoy it too. If you're below min specs well that can't be helped (I was below min specs when Horizons came out and I had to suffer for that) but I'd be happier if I could say "get that GPU and you're sorted". It's not that simple.

I'm glad I stuck with my 2080 Super and AMD CPU...
:p Something is just badly broken in regards to Odyssey and its not a priority :D Hahaha.

Some settlements are fine, even with all the lighting, smoke and well, maybe not fire.. but the rest, with NPC's wandering inside and out.. but others, even desolate ones (as above) unexplainably bad. Concourses can vary wildly from 100 to 40's. Guess we have to wait for it to leave alpha and be finished.

Currently, as far as I'm concerned, Odyssey appears primarily to be a platform for the introduction of Thargoid FPS.
I have about roughly 3000+ game pay hours with 2 characters and very, very few of those hours have been spent in Thargoid combat.
It never paid well or moved any personal narrative forward as far as I'm concerned.
Space Legs wasn't something I was particularly excited about as I was never sure what it would bring to the game and so far there still isn't much in it for me.
Which is a shame because I've loved the Elite franchise since playing it on ZX Spectrum but regardless of Odyssey in all honesty I haven't added to may game hours much for over a year now. It's needed another Distant Worlds or interesting event to get me back.
Hopefully Odyssey will be more than a Thargoid FPS, perhaps some quest type gameplay, speak to someone in a station who gives you Quest A with a reward to use to do Quest B, etc, etc rather than sneaking around tourist sites randomly shooting innocent NPC's in the back. Fingers crossed.

I think space legs is a hugely missed opportunity even when only restricted to stations and settlements. The concourse is always located around the same place. Why can’t we have different offices around stations and outposts we can visit, for engineer offices, naval offices, trading contacts, tech brokers and faction leaders? Located in the station entrance, maybe habitation ring? We even have lifts to access them.

Hehe yeh I take your point.

I saw Horizons as the first step towards the necessary concept of planetary exploration (required to at least match the feat of Elite Frontier) and it paved the way for EDO in many ways to take that on and expand upon it meaningfully, which I think it did.

But the actual core game play of Horizons wasn't exlusively stellar. Some of it was decent.

See, @Montgomery Dog - the chain of posts leading to this one is how "discussion" works. I invite you or the OP to do the same if it's important to you.
Yes, but the core difference here is that EDH players can still play with ED players without paying for the extra little planetary exploration addon. It's the same client, except landing on planets is locked behind having a planetary landing suite.

EDH players cannot play with EDO players. EDO is an entirely new client, and the community is split. It is very much CQC on foot, but everybody needs a whole new client to play together.
