What? I sure hope they don't refuse...they would be passing up something that would live on in history books. Plus, think of all the merch and licensing they could get in on...

I would like to see this station added as a commercial hub, 2,000 LY from Sol. With a station distance of 5 million LS from the Nav beacon. It could truely be the restaurant at the end of the universe. (Offering rare sentient livestock that desires to be eaten.)

Far enough out to make missions to the bubble the next best thing since sliced bread, but a brutal trek requiring a 1-2 hour in system navigation time. Total transit time considered, back to on par with the current long range mission hubs.

Permit required of course. Can't let just anyone into the club.

If that ship doesn't get called 'Boaty McBoatface' my faith in Democracy will be destroyed, and I swear I'll never vote for anything again. Honest.

Cracking idea! But instead of the Blue Danube, you would need to be serenaded with "Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer, more reliable than a garden strimmer" when docking of course.

At one point the city of Budapest had an internet vote to name some new bridge. Funny, how the declined to use the winning name "The Chuck Norris Memorial Bridge"BUt why would we need this in game? There are ALREADY some dumb names for stations... 'Glen's House of Lambada' for example. So why we need more immersion-breaking names is beyond me.

In view of the likelihood that the British Government is going to refuse to name the new research vessel "Boaty McBoatface" can we get agreement from FD that naming a space station "Spacey McSpaceface" is long overdue and should be implemented immediately?

NERC's is not actually part of the government. It is a non-departmental public body that receives funding from which ever government is in power at the time but that in no way allows them to be told what to do with the money.

As for the space station... No.

They're definitely blowing it. Pick a few people at random and ask them to name one British research vessel. The ask them about Boaty McBoatface. In the last week when I'd randomly drop that term people would know exactly what I was talking about.

Why name the thing if you don't want people to know it by name, just call it Boat Number 36892K. Sure it doesn't have quite the ring as HMS Beagle but 5 years from now I bet a lot more people would have heard of it.

Of course being stuffed shirts they'll probably call it HMS <random earl of something or other> and      off for some tea.

Because nothing is more immersive than having a number replace a letter in your name.

Stuff democracy, there's no point having a democracy when the voters are immature fools. Common sense should come first, the name should be ignored.

Yes!

I voted for Boaty McBoatface, and if I can't have that I want a Spacey McSpaceface.

Very few countries get the British sense of humour, and I think that FD should redress the balance!

I believe the British Antarctic Survey vessel that a university friend of mine went to serve on was called the "Shackleton" but my memory might be in error, it has after all, been a while :)

Which illustrates the point that a few may have missed. Despite many years having passed since 'The Worst Journey in the World', Antarctica is still the most hostile environment on earth, for humans. Those researchers do run genuine risks and, sadly, occasionally somebody dies. There seems to be a feeling amongst some people, including but not solely comprising a Tory politician, that Boaty McBoatface is a tad disrespectful.

Anyway, I'd welcome a Spacy McSpaceface in Elite, because, well, the danger and peril in Elite are not, erm, real. :)

Why is it such a bad name Steve50?

Very few people are actively interested in what these research vessels do, and this little internet interest in the boat could be quite valuable - generating more interest in what this ship is actually researching.

And as for democracy - If the majority of voters are immature fools - then immature fools rule. THAT'S democracy :D

All the above is said purely in jest :)

Agreed.. but then you get to the kind of humor that many folks dredge up in such situations, that's by no means restricted to us Brits but we do seem to do it rather well.. No it's not "respectful", British humor almost never is. But it is funny and as far as I'm concerned they should go for it and name it anyway.

Ever watched PMQs..?

And fwiw, the whole Boaty McBoatface debate has given NERC more publicity than they ever could have hoped for..

Personally I think it would be an injustice if the vote is ignored :)

And OP, yes to Spacey McSpaceface :)
