I believe the British Antarctic Survey vessel that a university friend of mine went to serve on was called the "Shackleton" but my memory might be in error, it has after all, been a while :)

That's a good and on point name. I'd be kind of shocked if it weren't called that. For anyone interested, if you want to see what the limits of human endurance are google "Shackleton".

Yes!

I voted for Boaty McBoatface, and if I can't have that I want a Spacey McSpaceface.

Very few countries get the British sense of humour, and I think that FD should redress the balance!

Anglophiles of America unite! I'm behind Spacey McSpaceface.

Whatever name it ends up with doesn't matter. If there's ever a news item about the ship it'll be referred to as the ship they were going to call Boaty McBoatface

So, regardless of how important their research is, it will be ignored as the Boaty McBoatface debate rekindles.
.
I'll add my vote for Spacy McSpaceface station. Though it could be a good name for an engineer, would explain why he lives alone in a tiny base on some remote airless moon.

Agreed.. but then you get to the kind of humor that many folks dredge up in such situations, that's by no means restricted to us Brits but we do seem to do it rather well.. No it's not "respectful", British humor almost never is. But it is funny and as far as I'm concerned they should go for it and name it anyway.

Yeah, I'm as 'British' as they come, given that I'm an Englishman with Scottish and Welsh blood. My own humour tends towards the gallows, but I wouldn't want to be the person telling some grieving parents that their son's/daughter's body would be brought back for burial on Boaty McBoatface. And I have in the past had to do that sort of job: it's hard enough already. I thought the whole thing was hilarious, and a massive, albeit funny,     -up to do an Internet vote in the first place. Schoolboy error.

Anyway, sorry for being dreary, but somewhere underneath there's another point of view, and the Tory bit is distracting no doubt, but irrelevant.

Hiya TomP

This thread is about a space station called Spacey McSpaceface in the Elite universe (That I think would be cool by the way...). Nobody would want a funeral ship called "Boaty McBoatface", that would be crass.

But a space station with the name "Spacey McSpaceface" would be kinda cool. :) No childrens bodies need to be transported in it and I reckon it could be a meeting place for people with a certain sense of humour :)

At one point the city of Budapest had an internet vote to name some new bridge. Funny, how the declined to use the winning name "The Chuck Norris Memorial Bridge"BUt why would we need this in game? There are ALREADY some dumb names for stations... 'Glen's House of Lambada' for example. So why we need more immersion-breaking names is beyond me.

There was a practical problem with the bridge, nobody dared cross it.

Funnily enough, the result is what destroyed my faith in Democracy. That and Trumpy McTrumpface getting the votes in the other part of the world.

Very well said! Boaty McBoatface proves that swarm intelligence of humans on the internet is at par with that of a bunch of rabid squirrels, at best (no offense meant to squirrels). What Tronald Dumb says about Americans, I cannot state here without triggering the forum filter into dumping a whole grocery department of fruits and vegetables into my post!

In view of the likelihood that the British Government is going to refuse to name the new research vessel "Boaty McBoatface" can we get agreement from FD that naming a space station "Spacey McSpaceface" is long overdue and should be implemented immediately?

This completely unoriginal and unfunny attempt at humour is why I would prefer Frontier not to implement pay for naming rights, unless they curate it properly.

I find this hilarious.

"Oh we can't call a station Spacey Mc SpaceFace! That's foolish and not at all sensible, such nonsense! <insert immersion hot take here>". This game has some of the most ridiculous station and minor faction names I have ever seen. It's great. Carry on. There is no precedent to set here; that was blitzed a long time ago.

As for Boaty McBoatface? The usual outcome of public surveys. NZ and Australia have both refused to accept 'Jedi' as an officially accepted religion despite multiple census hitting a number that would otherwise see any other supposedly 'valid' religion being given the opportunity to be recognised. It's amusing; but no entity is bound to name anything as a consequence of such things (unless they contractually wedge the outcome).

The same holds true for Frontier. It would be funny though, even if it's ostensibly childish and silly. :)
