Some of you may already know I'm a YouTuber. If not, then have a quick look at my forum signature :p

As (one of) the youngest forum members, it stands out to me that there is a serious lack of younger players, and this is something I set out to fix. I thought I could make a video to release to my subscribers on YouTube, most of whom are of this 'twitch' generation, telling them all about Elite and persuading them to get involved.

The video is now live, and is the first in a new series of videos called Speed Summaries due to the fact that I can read from a script fairly fast. It's just over 2 minutes long and covers the main points of the game and its history. Go check it out, and let me know what you think!

Thanks guys!

Sounds like a good idea to get some more youngsters involved though i'm sure there are a fair few already. I bet the interest in this new game isn't limited to old people like me who played the originals!

lol that was excellent mate, got to admit wasn't sure about the speed bit at first, but am old!
but i actually thought it was great by the end and you needed the vocal speed, you covered everything in a matter of minutes with great detail, was impressed so well done!

Wow i had a hard time keep up, but then again English ain't my main language.

Can you do a normal 1 for those that ain't that good in English, or can all yunglings speak speedy Gonzales English?

I can't talk like that in normal conversation, only when reading from a script. The speed seems to be a marmite thing. Some like it and some don't. For people like yourself who either don't like it or can't keep up, there is a transcript in the video description which can be read during the video to help keep up, or seperately.

Hope this helps.

I have added a poll to this thread regarding the speed of talking in the video. The fact that I am talking too fast appears to be one of the key areas for complaint. I want to know what you guys think about the speed of my delivery, and whether or not it should be slowed down.

Bear in mind that this video is aimed primarily at a younger audience, to attract their attention and also tell them most of the key points before they decide to do something else.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate all of it!

You sound rushed so I voted for you to be a bit faster than normal to mean with that: slower than in the clip.

Wow that was amazing to get all that info in such a short time.

Nice use of images too.

I do think the youth will come when Frontier stay marketing the game for sale in the coming months. I agree the initial hype/soon was to get us old timers onboard but it's the youth that will be mainly playing it as they have more time on their hands.

Its fine as is, i thought fast at first, but watching everything crammed in you get use to it, leave it in my opinion, and am old!...ish! ;)

Hi Vigor,

I thought the video was great! Lots of information but still concise enough to digest.

I'll add a small critique as it seems producing content like this is something you're passionate about and probably want to continue improving in: Some low level background music probably would have added a good level of ambiance to this video, so I'd definitely recommend experimenting that in the future. Other than that, good work! :)

This is what I'm worried about:

Was there any logical reason for speeding reading through that? Nice you added a transcipt, but you know what would have been better? Not needing one. I was just brought here by an article on massively after hearing about Star Citizen busting $15 million. And you've done nothing to make me really want to look in this direction other than let me know there is a forum and you're still taking money from kickstarter (maybe). I'm gonna check it out, but you guys gotta do better.

This is a comment that was put on the video, and seems to be the exact opposite of what I was intending. In no way do I want to put people off the game. I certainly wasn't expecting this!

Don't worry about it Vigor. Your piece is a teaser to get people to research the game for themselves, you can't convince a new player to commit to a game with a 2 minute piece!

Us backers didn't need convincing, so Frontier had it very easy with us guys.

Your generation will be far harder to convince as they will be attracted purely by gameplay, no nostalgia or fading memories for them!

But I heartily agree with you. The younger generation need to be made more aware of this game and I think Frontier should start soon otherwise they'll just go somewhere else and we don't want that!

Well done mate, great work!

I just took a look - I like the speed gimmick, but I agree with others it needs a bit of work. Two good examples of people presenting information quickly are the Fine Bros' "spoilers" videos and the Extra Credits webseries - you may want to cast an acquisitive eye that way for tricks you can use.

Two specific points you might like - in both cases, the speed of delivery reinforces some other aspect of the video (timing the visual gags in Extra Credits and demonstrating excitement in Spoilers). And in both cases, subtle gaps are inserted to give the audience time to process the information thrown at them. Often these gaps are covered with sound effects or images so people feel like the speed is constant even though they've actually been given time to draw breath.

So what is the problem there? Do better in what regard?

Its a good video Vigor but I've really always been of the notion of if you make the game they will come. It would be nice to have the younger generation on board but how many of the 'original' elite players picked it up from an internet article or videos?
No most of us either got it because we went around to a mates house that was already playing it. Frontier was a little different as Gaming Magazines were all the rage then, but I can bet 40-50% of sales were so called word of mouth sales from people going around to their mates house. Elite Dangerous will benefit from the modern media which is out there at the moment for sure. But the arguments now are the same as 1994, that Elite could never possibly be better than wing commander... It doesn't matter who this game appeals to initially to me, because I am well aware of what has happened every other time, for every other release of Elite. I think were all going to be very suprised when this game hits the shelfs.......

I thought the speech was a tad too fast, but then, the whole idea is it is a "Speed Summary", so it works. If you said all that at normal talking speed, it wouldn't be a speed summary ;)

Good use of images (as has been said) and nice music.
Good concept, and great video.

lamo. I forgot that clip by Yahtzee, yep he nailed EVE alright. :p One of the comments there tripped me out.

Chromodar said:
Basically, the combat is boring, the interface is ****, and there's sooo much downtime when nothing really interesting happens.

On the flipside, in what other game can you infiltrate a rival player run corporation, slowly progress through the ranks over a period of months or years, earning their trust, then when you have enough influence and the time is right, screw them over and nick all their stuff?

In short, the gameplay is bad, but the politics and social interactions are unique in gaming.

I'd like to add ...

or do the dirty on your so called mates that you've spent a year/s or more befriending in your corp or alliance, then take their billion isk assets in to a fight, do a turncoat maneuver, call it part of the game and part of the fun! What was that in another thread about 6000 pilots in one battle? A battle which had exactly the above happen? Do I sound bitter at the way CCP designed their game on the premise that these kinds of game mechanics would be adjusted? (Which always was just over the horizon and never happened.) The game actively promotes an attitude of treachery and dishonesty then calls it fun. lol What a pile of utter jokers (lol some would like that repeated here? Yay! Wunderbar! Not!)

Anyway, nicely done OneViGOR. Anything that gets more of you younger guys interested is good. Also, interested in more than just the twitch part of the game but the astrophysics side of it as well. Elite for the younger mind is a great introduction to the wonders of space. If you do future clip vids, be sure to emphasize that part as well (I know you went in to a bit about planets) but as I say, its more than just the twitch part, so much more. :)

Great work OneViGOR, keep it up.

Ignore it.
1) He wasn't brought to your Youtube channel by Massively (or was he?)
2) He has the mistaken belief that you are a Frontier Developments employee (you're not, are you?)
3) If he is relying on you alone to sell him the game, that's his problem. He should do more research and not take one opinion as the be-all-and-end-all
