Spent $2000 on hardware upgrade to play ED:Odyssey.

Well I agree. In this world there's already too much violence. FDEV created an entire galaxy for what? To bring additional violence on a pc game? They've alway mostly focused on pew pew than peaceful exploration gameplay. Why do they feel the urge to put a gun in our hands and make a criminal out of us?
Can't disagree with that, the FPS part of odyssey and it's plethora of guns represents the worst of humanity.
...With the whole of the Milky Way out there to explorer.... and all of it's seven or so plant types. 😒.

On a lighter note i upgraded to a rtx3080. And now everything is great. \o/

I‘m getting ready to upgrade the computer I bought just to play Elite Dangerous in VR because of Odyssey. But then that rig is six years old.

@Rockflint Go get BF2042 and then come back here and tell us how it compares? 🍤
Just for clarification, I built my new rig myself from parts purchased from Microcenter. The existing PC was a DDR3 based machine and it was time. EDO is not the only reason that I did it.. Part of that cost was a replacement of my old HOTS with a Warthog stick and throttle. With the new rig, I can now upgrade form 2000 to the current MS Flightsim.

I purchased the Odyssey expansion over a year ago on Steam. It would not download on the old machine but I was ok with it as I was enjoying Horizons. Now Elite in Trading and Exploration. Overall, I am happy with Elite, but I just don't dig on the gun combat genre..

On the gripping hand though

You can play Doom/Doom eternal maxed out to the max in 4 k at 70 billion fps ... if you want an FPS game that is..

Hi Flimley, there's more than 7, however that's a minor thing, I agree entirely that more time and effort should have been spent on exploration and changing from the current hand crafted plant types, I can only imagine FDEV felt they could attract more players by going full FPS, but that was a mistake. I think actually making the galaxy way more interesting to explore would have attracted more attention from the game media and probably more players looking for that sort of experience, and they could have still used the legs part of the game for combat, Thargoids, megaship infiltration, exploration of guardian and thargoid ground bases, that would have attracted a lot of players.

Gpu not good enough, you should have waited until next gen 40 series arrives. Its going to be here before Christmas

EDO's on-foot FPS issues are a software problem, not hardware. Only FDev can correct this. So, unless someone has a really low-end system, performance issues can't really be blamed on hardware - especially something decent like the OP's system, which is a really nice spec for solid 1440p gaming. Assuming at least 16GB RAM and a decent M.2 NVMe drive along with good cooling / air flow and PSU to support it.

The 3070 is a pretty decent GPU. I got one recently to replace a 1070 that just wasn't cutting it any more after I replaced my old 1200p (back light fault) monitor with a modern 1440p one. The 1070 was largely fine in EDO, with a few settings turned down, but it had to work hard to maintain (close to) 60fps in other titles even with things turned down. To be clear, the Spaceship stuff was great, the On Foot not so much. While I'd fully planned to wait for the 40 series - or AMD's equivalent, I had the chance of a new 3070 at a decent price so got it. While GPU's may not be bargains currently, the 3070 - with the prices where I am - was very much the best value per frame GPU available, comfortably beating the 3060Ti. I did my due diligence, watching performance tests of other GPU's at 1440p and for each of the 3070TI, 3080 10GB, 3080 12GB and 3080Ti the extra cost of each did not give anywhere near the same percentage fps increase (including 1% and .1% lows). Also, in all the various titles I've tried, with settings maxed out, I've not seen over 6GB vRAM usage, so that 8GB isn't a problem - at least not yet.

I did this before with the 1070, I picked it up as a temporary card (I had twin 680's at the time) while waiting for the 1080Ti to be formally announced. The 1070 turned out to be so good, I used it for six years and never got the 1080Ti. I'd be pleased if the 3070 is even half as long-lived. I even got a cheap water block for it, cos stuff and tinkering is fun. If the 40-series really is a huge leap and the prices aren't crazy and GPU's are actually available, then the 3070 might be only see short-term use on the main gaming PC. In the mean-time though, I'm really pleased with the 3070 and the price I got it for.

Fear not OP Starfield is coming.
My first "dedicated gaming rig" came about in '02 when Morrowind dropped. The upgrade came about 4 years later for Oblivion. The next rig was built in 2010 to play FO New Vegas and in anticipation of Skyrim. Upgraded for VR and FO 4. Got into Elite about 2017 while doing flight sims in VR. The I9 12th gen and 3080ti system I just built was for the G2 headset and MSFS '22 and in anticipation of Starfield. EDO was just a bonus.
There seems to be a pattern...

The doom is strong with this one. If you love Elite Dangerous, I would bet that you will, despite the Negative Nancy's, find Odyssey an excellent addition to the game like most who have given it a fair shot already do.

Is it worth building a $2,000 PC for? That's a question only that individual can make.

I ended up purchasing a $1,200 laptop, and it being able to play Elite in VR was one of the more compelling reasons, among a few others that when added together made the purchase a reasonably outlay. I'm sure most would find some other compelling reasons to upgrade/purchase a PC if they are interested in running Odyssey well. A 2060/16Gb/i7 six core (from 2020 onwards) will do the trick to run Odyssey at a reasonably solid 60fps+ @1080 on Ultra, with some dips around settlements into the 40s.

Take that for what it is. BTW; I can play Odyssey on that configuration in VR relatively well too. Though I'm sure a high-end VR user would baulk at my performance, but then, they shouldn't be baulking at a $2,000+ outlay for a VR rig that works how they prefer it either.

Source? 😝

It's astonishing how you remain convinced that anyone who doesn't think Odyssey is the best thing since sliced bread, has to be an unfair, unreasonable, review-bombing, hating, doom-saying Negative Nancy.
Don't take it personally mate. Though definitely noted that you didn't ask OP of the Any New Plans on ED ? Or is it still Maintenance Mode without any Future ? for a source back the thread title's claim up when you responded to that. Or put words into their mouth either. Ho hum.

Well that was silly. I can confirm that a 3090 also doesn't resolve the VR issues I have in Odyssey, but I didn't buy the card just for Odyssey. It's awesome for video editing, and I've played a lot more other games since getting it! :D
