Newcomer / Intro SRV control!

OK Fnord Velkor (great name, BTW) I'm going to give up. I'm fed up of having to log back into Elite Dangerous to "free" the SRV and reland back on the planet.

Hardly inspiring game play for the 21st centure, FDEV....

Is there a trick to shooting the crystal shards. I've been four meters away and can't make them shoot off!

Turret mode - target the shard - make sure shard is to the front of the "stalk", i.e. fire not blocked
If that doesn’t work deselect they target and using the turret aim manually at the shard, that way you can get hits away from the targetable point which can do the job.
It can be a bit expensive in ammo though.

Well don't use the shard sites is all - I have only ever visited one once and found it boring, certainly not worth the trip.

I'm was after some rare elements, how can I get these without shards?

I like to take time driving in the SRV in Horizons hunting meteorites and outcrops for raw materials. Use EDDb bodies search to find suitable places for what I would like:

In addition, shooting the cargo racks at the (some?) crashed Anaconda sites produces rares - I like "The Bug Killer" as that produces Antimony, Tellurium and Ruthenium which can be used to trade for other raw materials, in addition the Bug Killer has comms ports which give AEC and AEA data materials - plus an entertaining cut-screen "visitor" from time to time.

Just do stuff you enjoy, that is the main thing. (y)

P.S. Having multiple accounts means you can do different stuff with them, as the mood takes you.

They can be found on other planets but they are much more scarce the shard sites are a much more concentrated supply.
Back in what is now Horizons 3.8 and on my old computer which struggled for FPS due to the concentration of targets at the shard sites I would drive around the edge of the site picking off outliers and as there were plenty of targets not chasing after anything that fell into an awkward location.
I know the shards aren’t so concentrated in Odyssey and presumably Horizons 4.0 but I would suggest a similar cautious approach if the sites are giving you trouble.

I don't know how you can deal with DA Off - it is just so counter-intuitive to me.

Going walkies on the other hand - I really wish you didn't have to keep a key pressed to keep walking, it would be so much better if, like NMS, just pressing K toggled walking on and off.

DA feels counter-intuitive to me - it's driving, so I'm used to keeping my foot on the accelerator to move. Probably worth noting that I do tend to drive it like I stole it - my driving style is much more GTA than it is Euro Truck Simulator 😁

Are you not using an axis for throttle then? With DA on I only move at the speed of my throttle position, if I zero the throttle the SRV stops, righ away. With DA off my SRV only gradually slows to a stop when I zero the throttle. That's why DA Off is not to my liking, the SRV speed is less responsive to my throttle position.

I use my HOTAS to control my avatar when on foot so use the throttle to move forward or back, the only difference is on foot I have the throttle set so backwards doesn’t require me to hold down a button. So no requirement to hold anything to keep moving.

Thank you for the advice. Drive Assist OFF definitely helps!

What do I do if the SRV gets stuck?!

Also, is there a technique for shooting the polonium etc, sometimes they won't fly of the shards!

Paul

Last time I was harvesting shards there was always one particular located shard that would never fly off no matter how much you shot it, learn to recognize this one, it's always in the same spot. The crystals also need to be shot about 3 quarters up from the base, using the guns wander to fire shots at the right time helps. Keep in mind you can shoot them on foot if they are particularity difficult to get to in the SRV but the scoop needs to be activated each time you leave and enter the SRV. Oh yes, don't try and shoot the ones under the ground!

I've not had that issue, I try to avoid hitting things, I have played exclusively in EDO since the beta and harvested shards many time, not sure why you are getting hung up a lot, once you get used to the handling and how it changes from ice to rock and from high to low gravity it's easy to drive around stuff.
