Newcomer / Intro SRV control!

Are you not using an axis for throttle then? With DA on I only move at the speed of my throttle position, if I zero the throttle the SRV stops, righ away. With DA off my SRV only gradually slows to a stop when I zero the throttle. That's why DA Off is not to my liking, the SRV speed is less responsive to my throttle position.
I use a controller for driving the SRV and operating the FSS (an old PS4 pad) and only for those two things and no, I don't use an axis for it - I could obviously by mapping throttle to one of the thumbsticks but I prefer buttons so have accelerate mapped to square, handbrake to X and brake to circle.

And regarding the bold, that's exactly why DA off and a throttle button feels natural to me - release the throttle button and it coasts to a stop like a car would. If I want to stop 'immediately' that's what the brake is for. Or the handbrake 😁

I always use a docking computer and supercruise assist!
I don't use supercruise assist (I would never use autopilot on a Tesla either, call me a Luddite but I don't trust these new fangled computers :D) but I do have a docking computer (just the basic one) on my Type 9 just for convenience because I'm usually using it for multiple delivery runs and manually docking the space cow 15 times in an hour gets old fast. I also have one on my exploration Anadonda because I'm often out for months at a time in that and docking gets so unfamiliar during that time that I don't want to lose half a billion credits of exploration data by banjoing it in to the toast rack on my way back home lol.

I use my HOTAS to control my avatar when on foot so use the throttle to move forward or back, the only difference is on foot I have the throttle set so backwards doesn’t require me to hold down a button. So no requirement to hold anything to keep moving.

Unfortunately the axis assignment does not have a forward-only option - so pretty useless for my throttle - I had to fiddle axis to remain stopped. If they had forward-only then I'd for sure use it.

Have you tried increasing the dead space around the axis center, that way it should stop if you just let it go, but yeah forward only throttle with key to reverse is what I use as well, it's very handy.

I do not have an axis centre detent - read "forward only" - I could set it up in the walkies but it means a fiddle to have it centred. If I remember correctly the axis on my throttle produces only positive numbers i.e. the range isn't from +something to -something - so there is not a "0" around which to have a dead-zone. Of course I could be wrong in assuming that is how dead-zones are implemented.*

All the other axes on my controls are self-centring so not useful in this case of wanting the avatar to walk continuously without holding / pressing something.

I prefer my flying to use a forward-only axis both in spaceships and in flight sims - I also like to keep it like that in the SRV. Mucking about with muscle-memory is not something I want to do and I don't want to modify my CHPro Throttle to give it one on those youtube centre-detent mods just for this.

* EDIT - Yes I was wrong in my assumption, see post below.

OK - I decided to have a "fiddle around" and sure enough one actually can set a centre deadzone on an axis that doesn't have a centre detent (or a 0 between - and + raw output numbers). So yes I can set up my CHPro Throttle for going walkies - I just have to remember to pull it back after boarding else it makes a grinding mess on undocking. ;)
