SRV engineering/new types

After all these years, I think that just as there are several types of fighters, there should already be different types of SRV. But even so, I thought of something that could change the way we use our SRV.

Would it be possible to create an engineer to modify the SRV Hangar (what would change the characteristics of the SRV's in that same hangar?
For example, modify the distributor in the same way as on ships, modify the cargo capacity, weapon DPS and engine power.
These are just examples, but I think you get the idea.

You can't Engineer for more cargo, Skimmers and Sentinels are jokes so there is no need for combat mods and it's driving is squirrely enough as-is.

We just need alternate SRVs, Engineering the Scarab is pointless.

It would be nice to have SRV's dedicated to planet types, surface mining, exploration etc.
Same for SLF's. An exploration version which carries an SRV too.
Sort of like that Sidewinder that was MEANT TO BE ABOARD THE ANACONDA, but I digress.

When I was playing the game for the first time, I quickly realized in 33-rd century the SRV rides on wheels, lol.

That's quite possible for the end of 21-st century, not a thousand years later. Someone really messed up this idea of planetary transport. We are forced to imagine that while we travel faster than light at great speed, we cannot use anti-grav engines for small vehicle. Moreover the entire galaxy drives only one (ONE) planetary rover. And FD doesn't want to improve that part of game, which would affect probably ALL players. Carriers are more important. I'm speechless.

There is no anti-grav in Elite, hence why we have spinning space stations.

Yeah I know, but I don't buy it - Gravity
There are spinning space stations to make an artificial gravity, and ships capable of doing 65000 LY to the far end of known galaxy. And just Humans and Thargoids and another ancient extinct spiecies.
This is all FD's B.S., there must be something else in the void .

I'm sure there are speeders à la Star Wars, we see skimmer drones hovering, so I can only assume that in the future (New Era) we may finally get some new SRV types like open air speeders. With that being said, the Scarab is a simple and cheap workhorse, why fix what's not broken?

So we see a kind of anti-grav engines in those hovering Skimmers. Yet impossible to give them for a players use. Game is 6 years old. The Scarab maybe isn't broken technically, what is broken is this idea of technologically advanced future. The galaxy is explored but it's empty and dead. The future we see is not tempting - at least not in a way known from StarTrek or StarWars series. This huge galaxy of commercial companies brought to us customers only single planetary vehicle and there are just a few corporations making starships and modules.
When I see the pictures from galnet or other so called "npc activities", I wonder what the hell are they doing down on those planets. Probably reason why we didn't get the atmospheric landings and we'll never get - those planets have nothing interesting to offer and nothing happens there.

A few years ago there was a reddit post with some player created alternative SRV designs:

Even if they don't want to give us full on new SRV's I cannot for the life of me understand why we cannot have the ability to equip a SRV hangar bay for skimmers / golliaths. These drones would obviously be telepresenced just like an SLF or an SRV turret.

My biggest problem with the SRVs is cargo space. We should at least have an option to increase cargo space. Like adding cargo containers on the roof or towing some type of cargo trailer. But in the future, more options for the SRVs would really make planet exploring more enjoyable.

I’d go for a hovercraft SRV. Then maybe I could do surface stuff in VR instead of having to switch to 2D after landing. I’ve never been able to come to terms with the barfmobile in VR.

Dirty drives engineering, that's all the Scarab needs.

After that we just need different variants. A duel railgun one, a fat otherwise useless cargo hauling one, a hovering one for when you want to go at any speed on walnut planets...

Then we need something that fills a class 4 or 6 hanger by itself.

I've wanted player controlled skimmers ever since horizons was released, so I'm with you in support of the hover-SRV. As for Barf-mobile in VR, have you tried driving it like a tank using the turret?

This might depend pn your controller setup, but I also play in VR and have never been to bothered by the SRV. What I do is drive the thing clear of the ship, deploy turret, and drive it like a tank. I have pitch and yaw for the turret mapped to the Y and X axis' on my right stick, then the twist on that sitck is the steering for the SRV, for back and forward on the SRV chassis I used to use the throttle in my hotas, but I have since switched to twin sticks, and useback and forward on left stick for SRV throttle. The hidden bonus is that the turret view isn't as prone to following the undulations of the terrian, taking some of the potentially nausea inducing out heave of fighting skimmers and what not.

I'm still trying to figure out how I can take some of that money and Low Temperature Diamonds @Bigmaec was throwing at his screen... My arms are getting tired with throwing collector limpets at my screen.
