Standard Beta Release Discussion thread

you get what you want, you make your story.
any game has technical limitations - more detailed characters/vehicles you drive more network code needs to be sent = less players can be together without problems.

only reall MMO by your definition then are text based web games, because there can be all in same place and even then they limit "character" output to hundreds of entries not to spam browser.

anyway ED is MMO just not the MMO where anyone sees anyone if they are in same place ALL the time, but if they are person of interest you WILL see them always, so again - how you play will determine your experience.

there are no graphical games where are no instances/shards. Does that mean there are no MMO's? :) you will have 90% of AI to annoy and pirate and 10% of players, there will be trade routes where you can find other players and you will have to WORK hard to find such routes and locations where to interdict them. it's not just go there and PC's will await you, piracy is hard ;p

Yea I understand your points and I understand instances and shards but do you think people are actually going to trade in the "ALL" mode? Not a chance, they are going to trade in SP so there will never be any pirating between players. Its not even about being a toxic pirate. Its the experience of playing with other players, the danger that lurks and if the crime and punishment systems are in place its not going to be a death match world at all. I just cant understand that people still want to play this in SP and just watch the balance of their wallet go up. There is no real story line so are SP players just gonna fly around, trade, kill npc's and repeat? To what end? Eventually you will have more cash that needed and the Role play you have made up in your head will eventually wear thin!! At least with a true multiplayer experience you have the danger of the unknown, the nuanced role-play opportunities and the unpredictable yet exciting nature of player versus player interactions! What I see happening (outside of those playing purely SP and Co-op) however is players making money in SP and then just entering PVP with their combat ships and the "all" mode will be pure deathmatch!

How are we going to pirate other players when all they are going to do is trade in SP?

It's not all about pirating other players, there are NPCs you can pirate too you know, and there's more of them to fill out the galaxy. Just wanting to pewpewpew other players everytime you see one ... well, each to their own I suppose. At the end of the day, safe traders will find safe routes, so it's up to the pirate to do their homework. And I agree that meeting other players may be difficult with grouping, blocking, etc.

ED is so big, that meeting a player could be a rare opportunity in the outer fringes and away from the main trading lanes. If I haven't seen a player in ages, the last thing I would think (personally) is "let's shoot them". What their intentions are is another matter, so I hope comms work.

i have no intention of (and never wanted to ) play anything other than single player off line. i simply cant stand the attitude of the under 12's that seem to be the majority of players , and dont get me started on those with greater years who get led into behaving like an under 12

yes the above has hit the nail on the head. For those who want to just Gank trader players, you will be dissapointed, as you will have to put some hard work in to do it, not just attack traders who are probably not equiped to defend themselves overly well. For those that want to trade, and this is a space trading game, they run the risk of player interdiction, but are not going to get ganked every time they try and take their 5 tons of algae to recover from the last time they were attacked by the last player sat there waiting to make the game unplayable for them.

First of all this game was not touted as a purely trading sim!!You dont seem to realise that with proper systems in place traders don't have to feel vulnerable if trading in more secure areas! But yes for the more lucrative trades some risk vs reward is great a thing, AND btw I am more a trader than a pirate! I like that risk and that danger being present but with proper systems in place - ie crime systems, escape mechanisms etc you can trade relatively safely. People also forget that with traders and pirates come bounty hunters, security runners - all these role playing elements!! BUT alas this will not come to fruition!

You can still play single player online and not be disturbed by other players. And you can start to play single player online *today* already.

Offline makes sense if you have problems with connection or just live somewhere without constant Internet connection.

I play as a trader, I dont want to pewpew other players. Im 30 years old btw and not some little kid. I just prefer the experience of player with others and having that danger present.

How to download standard beta?

I am a standard beta backer, and have the single player build. I believe the standard beta should be available today (right?), how do I download it? Do I need to download the product from the online store again, or will it be made available to download in the launcher I already have installed?

I'm 30 BTW. But for my interest can you please validate how it is that you think PVP, competitive play, player role playing, bounty hunting pirates, running security for traders is infantile and for 12 year old kids? And then how playing SP is for more mature older players? Just trying to figure out where this distinction is being made?

Again just to iterate, I don't want to go around killing traders - in fact I haven't even done that once! What I am going to miss is the player to player role playing - ie. running a security detail for traders - hardly plausible if they are only going to do it in SP.

May have been missed in the merge

400 Billion Systems
7 Billion population on earth

if everyone on earth plays elite we will have over 50 systems each - it is possible even in multiplayer not to meet anyone if you find yourself in a quite area of the galaxy.

We could end up playing multiplayer all alone just due to scale

Me too. :) And I look forward to meeting like-minded players. I will also take cheer from denying those who wish me ill by successfully running away (my combat kinda sucks).

Well, I'm sure Frontier will look at that data during beta, so they can balance the game properly. Maybe they will encourage playing online with more rewards.

i know i could , but have no wish to. the deciding factor between SP on/off line for me is the persistent universe. SP online is still with the previously mentioned demagraphic subset that i do not want affecting me in any way.

in real life i have nothing to do with them , nothing to say to them , nothing i can imagine (or hear) them saying to me that i would like either. so why would i want to spend a lot of time interacting with them ?

also i will not be swayed to go to a boy-band concert for exactly the same logical reasoning :p
