…and anyway, if there's any game that other space games should aspire to be like, it's FTL. One of its strong points is that nothing about it is in any way inspired by SC (for obvious reasons).

Not sure if this has been posted here, but:

Good times. ;)

They aren't exactly space legs at that stage, are they?
Also, it may be a technical nit-pick, but I don't think clipping really constitutes “making angels”. ;)

Still funny though, purely from a snarkiness standpoint. I really hope elite can pull it together in 2020 and deliver something really impressive.

The really funny thing is, why even bother? I'm sure ED guys are far too busy playing a spaceship space game set in space rather than having to walk around on terra firma (or Tesco value Canada for SC) for no real reason. :D

If you're closing in on being a decade behind on development, you really have to latch on to the differences that might make a difference, no matter how irrelevant they are to the thing you're comparing against. Desperation trumps all other considerations of what is bothersome and what is not. :D

[NERD]
Surely not lifelike (still a show after all), but not "unrealistic". That scene didn't mean to simply depict a sudden deceleration event, but that particular instance in which the "Ring space", as a mean of defence, stopped everything flying inside its space above a definite speed threshold down to a crawl. The moment the ship crossed the ring and was slowed down, the pilot head still traveled at several km/s and was "slowed down" only when it was too late, the torso instead remained in one piece (at least externally) because it was already stopped by the straps. That's also why in the subsequent scene the remains appear more to be like frozen instead that simply floating in zero g, they were identified as a "menace" and slowed to almost complete stillness.

Without an external pressure force the head would simply be a 5 or 6 lbs object ripping free from its hinge (spine). This is just an instant deceleration so the head wouldnt "explode" thats what my issue was. Also with an abrupt stop from km/s to zero the torso would ve reacted the same way, no matter about the straps. The straps would ve rather acted like scissors. Also hard to believe that the whole ship(?) remains in one piece ^^

Mental note... don’t catch up on the Expanse while eating... ;)

The whole point of what happens there in The Expanse is indeed the ship (and pilot torso) are kept totally unharmed. It's actually explained later (through "whatever" controls the portal) and IIRC it's even pointed at, in-universe by scientists who investigate it...
Still, illustrates rather well my feeling when i see SC ships stopping from supersonic speeds on a dime..

Ah so PALEEEZE explain it then, not knowing is torture and I have yet to watch the expanse (is it possible that its a cheap rip-off of the novel "Pushing Ice" by chance?)

I wouldnt want to spoil the whole show for you as this is quite central to the point. And season 2 is spectacular :) You'll also see that everything else is quite realistic mainly ship accelerations (they have to brace heavily, and even take chemicals to endure sustained high G..). It's also not "cheap" by any means, it's actually one of the best sci fi shows up there with the BSG remake IMHO. It's an adaptation of a series of novels of the same name.

But-but-but, that's exactly what I did in the post above! Just how much additional handwavium do you need other than "Ring space fairy science twisting laws of physics because space magic"? :D

Overall development update on 3.8 and beyond.

It's nice that they acknowledge that the servers aren't able to actually cope with the game they've designed. :D

It's almost as if it was a ridiculously incompetent and utterly boneheaded idea not to start with developing the network component of the attempted game before filling it with pointless and useless junk details that only serve to break everything.
