Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

In a pre-alpha test environment in the very earliest stages with regular account wipes, no economy, and persistence barely even a gamete - a robust testing phase of collision dynamics and a thorough examination of all possible avatar termination events seems the best use of resources given that there are no gameplay aspects to currently explore.
For science.

Redlir had the same problem with the AI. :D Although he brought it on himself. :)

LOD Popping
- This is unrelated to the V4 improvements we made, but something we're obviously acutely aware of and want to address. The problem is sheer cost, using the current tech to draw for hundreds of miles would bring any machine to its knees, its simply not scale-able to spawn individual trees for entire forests. So instead we probably need completely new solutions for building and rendering distant forests and other large scale asset formations, and this is a sizable portion of work so needs to be balanced against all the other demands of Star Citizen and Squadron 42.

Oh dear.

Poor implementation of the medical bed spawn points on the Carrack, Cutty red etc are causing some drama at the moment. There was a video a few pages back....namely ship jacker shoots pilot in the head after sneaking aboard, his matey boi hangs around the medbay and shoots pilot as he spawns in...ad infinitum. It's now so bad it's becoming a joke...that's not PvP, it's griefing in it's purest form, pure and simple and every former pad rammer and troll is taking a bite of it for the YouTube lulz.

The only option for the pilot in this case is to change servers since he can't select another spawn point, if he's running cargo, he'll probably lose it.
This is why space legs isn't viable for this kind of game, what would be the solution for such problem? Either ships have impenetrable defense from hijacking or the ship owner would be completely screwed to allow hijacking gameplay.

One immediate idea would be to stuff the ship with anti-personnel weaponry in various locations activated upon contingency, and disabled either through hacking or destruction of their control units, keeping the owning Commando alive just long enough to persuade him to disable them somehow, clipping through the floor to avoid them, or buying an Idris.

The simplest solution would be allowing the hijacker to turn off the respawn bed, so the the ship owner is not forced in to the respawn/kill loop. The go back to whatever their regular spawn would be.

Alternatively, could have the respawning player have a choice to respawn on the ship or the closest normal spawn point.

Any solution still involve screwing up either the hijacker or the ship owner. It just not worth the game development resources needed to support such gameplay in MMO environment.

And btw, even without that, what would happen when heavy weaponry is allowed when doing in ship personnel combat, can you destroy a ship from the inside with grenades and rpg and the likes? Sounds fun when imagined, but a technical nightmare for any developer.

Yeah, I already saw that - spawncamping is obviously not the most innovative form of trolling (unless this is the mid 90s and it's all been a terrible dream) but the real question is why hasn't a game developed 25 years after that with $300m of gamer's money managed to design it out.

That doesn't sound like $300m worth of fidelity at all. Perhaps Roberts is actually writing for a desktop quantum computer - it would at least explain the timeline we seem to be looking at to a release.

1st solution is like what I stated before, solution involving screwing one side of the player.

The 2nd solution is an expected typical quick fix solution from inept short minded commandos and possibly CIG to some extend. Some questions : would it allow spawning to another star system? If not then what would happen if there's no spawn spot nearby?

Of course I'm aware that there's no other star system yet, which is why this is a trash and scam of a game.

...Even if finite and not that big, world of Breath of the Wild, GTAV or largely smaller ones like Outer Wilds and Prey can provide great exploration....

Do any of those supply a specialist exploration vessel? If not then it is reasonable that any and all mechanism/vessel within these games can engage in every aspect of exploration.

But.

But. If you sell a specialist exploration vessel, then it is reasonable that it can do something that no other (non exploration) vessel can do. No matter the number of solar systems.

But, let's be honest, exploration vessels should be heading out on five year missions into the big black. Not popping next door to see if it can find a penguin that recites poetry.

Somebody should have told Roberts that when he was busy theorycrafting gameplay that he sold the game on. Although to be fair, someone probably did; he's not exactly known for his listening skills.

Looking forward to the addition of the PvP slider any day now!

If i get on your ship, kill you and turn off the respawn point, you should be screwed.

We can worry about the next star system issue in 2025 when there is another star system.

This won't solve the griefing, tbh. They aren't doing it to steal your ship or to kill you. They are doing it to kill you repeatedly and waste your time, so they just won't turn off the respawn point.

Its really fascinating how CIG keep the money rolling in.

Selling dreams.txt really works.

I hear there are people making lots of money at the moment selling coronavirus remedies that are useless.

That proves that mankind isn’t that smart as they think. At some point „just around the corner“ they have officially release something. And I have to keep in mind +300$ for this experience is just.. Where is the money gone? For what did they spend it? Where are all those CEO´s ? Is the VIP still working for CIg? The only thing I like to know is when for the majority of the fans is the breaking point and they turn away from the Projekt.

What happened to "play the way YOU want".....now its the EVE approach?

CIG: "yeah kids, just play with the other kids and leave the adults alone, we are busy counting money"

Looks like CIG is as susprised as the community by these upcoming problems as if next to no planning was put into the concept beforehand. Now if that holds true for space legs then boy oh boy, this is going to be gold ^^

Planetary Tech V4....

My understanding of procedural generation (limited though it is) leads me to believe that PG and tiling are antithetical. How do you end up with tiles on a PG landscape? And having to blend them by hand surely makes any PG there might be entirely pointless.
