Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Tried out the new Xenothreat in the latest PTU build with a few of the org guys. All in all, the improvements are very marked over the last one...frames were still low-ish but very smooth gameplay wise with hardly any desync at all, even with up to 20 players, ships and as many Xeno ships including the Idris on screen. They didn't drop the server cap this time and we had a full server of 50 players during our run through Xeno...

I recorded a video of the Xeno bunfight as I eperienced it from the turret of @Intrepid3D's Cutty Black...apart from my mouse sensitivity being set too low for the turret yaw, I thoroughly enjoyed the event. Compared to the last effort...it was chalk and cheese performance wise...didn't see one rubber banding ship the whole time even when my screen was full of explosions, missiles, torpedoes, flares from the Idris as well as the Xeno ships.

This latest 3.14 PTU build overall has raised the framerates especially around Orison, as much as the frames are still on the low side again with all the clouds etc turned up to maximum, the patch runs very smoothly for everyone...and apparently...from what I'm seeing anyway...almost banished the desync. We'll see what happens when it hits the live servers of course.

Against all my expectations, you've impressed me Ci¬G, keep it coming. Still a few bugs and annoyances to sort out in 3.14, but it's getting there. :)

I'll post the vid when it's done processing...

I see 24-29 FPS.

I quit playing ED because of those framerates. And your PC is way beefier than mine.

I can't even imagine what framerates i'd be getting.

I'm on a laptop and in PU get 30-60fps. Very rarely go below 30, screen caps at 60 (4K OLED), and typical framerates actually doing stuff is more 45-59fps.
2560x1440p. Settings on default Very High, except turning off all the effects like chromatic aberration, blur etc.

Not sure what the WorkingSet actually means? as in it's often red:

Also re: laptop, got a longer HDMI cable today, so have ascended to full console-casual and playing on a TV again :p

Sounds good. Any idea when it's going to be available to us normal pledge people?

So what does an org have in-game?
Like comms channels, groups or anything, or is everything essentially out-of-game?

I have a recording too but at 14GB its going to take a few hours to upload and Youtube will take at least a day to butcher the 1440P encoded image quality.

@Agony_Aunt it may only be 25 to 30 FPS but CIG have worked pretty hard on the Frame Pacing to make it smooth, you turn the OSD off you don't even notice its sub 30 FPS.

Ah, were now doing the 30 FPS is fine debate?

You only normally get those in console vs PC threads :p

If i wanted to be a dirty console peasant, i'd play on the PS4 we have.

All I said was it's getting better...framerates at the same place in Orison a couple of PTU builds back was 10-14fps with the volumetric cloud detail set to medium or high. The screenshot I posted had the cloud detail (and everything else) set to max. Did you read the post or just look at the pictures?

For Star Citizen...since that's what we're discussing here... specifically for the latest 3.14 PTU build, the overall framerates, stability and smoothness even at those relatively low framerates are pretty good in Star Citizen terms, nothing more. Compared with the current 3.13 live patch, even though the framerates are slightly better overall in that, the latest PTU build was an absolute pleasure to play. The lack of desync and server lag, especially in Xenothreat and compared again to the last effort, made it even better.

Video from last night...should I put a caveat up strictly for Auntie about the low framerates?

I think you're reading too much into my post.

Biggest problem with SC is that if you get disconnected from the server, that's basically death, even though you can just reclaim your ship you lose everything else like cargo or ore and fail whatever mission you were on. This is still a thing after 12 years?
It is unfortunately, sad but true :(

When you see an enemy infront of you just press T to target it, 5 is for cycling targets nearest even if they are not in your view :)

I managed to work that out about halfway through...damned KB/M controls. Us proper hotas players use voice attack for all that nonsense anyway. When I'm flying, it's "Target" for in front of me, "Next target", "Previous target" for cycling...even "Target next/previous/nearest hostile/friendly target." Having to go back to full scrub mode and actually press a button is so 1990's :D

I've got so used to using the hotas and VA for everything ship management wise I don't even know the keyboard bindings any more...VA is everything from shield/power management, engines, QT spooling and jumping, locking and launching missiles, target and sub target selection...even landing gear and VTOL modes. I'm like a complete newbie having to use M/KB.

I'll have to sort out my mouse sensitivity curves for the turret yaw too, damn near wore a hole in my mouse mat...

So what does an org have in-game?
Like comms channels, groups or anything, or is everything essentially out-of-game?
The org thing...having regular friends online to play alongside, share missions and bounties, co-op mining in Prospectors, ROC's or a Mole, share ships, multicrew positions filled rather than relying on randoms or flying solo...for comms wise, a dedicated org Discord channel. All this is for in game, outside of it doesn't mean much besides like everyone else, we all play different games when we're not playing SC so the ability to team up when playing other multiplayer games is always there. At this present moment looking at the Discord server, some of the guys are playing escape from Tarkov, Deadside, Stellaris, Path of Exile and a few other assorted games.

I'm sure a few of us will try out BF 2042, for example, when it appears, I know I'll perhaps head back into playing a bit of Battlefield when it launches, haven't really played much BF since BF4...

It's just a common meeting place for likeminded folk...the old clan system from days of yore. Some orgs in SC try too hard to be serious, assigning ranks and roles and all that tosh which is why I avoided org membership until recently, I just never met the right group of folk I wanted to spend time playing SC with before now. I'm glad that ours is strictly casual, the majority of us are long term SC veterans and we play SC and other games strictly for the fun aspect of playing online with mates :)

As for 3.14, the PTU is on wave 3, available to all backers to test. It means downloading a whole other version of SC though so you'll need double the SSD space...as for when it goes live?...It still needs a bit of work but it's nearly there, After playing in the PTU, I find it hard to go back to 3.13...3.14 is so different and way smoother an experience overall.

Guilty as charged m'lord

That was meant to be read in an Admiral Ackbar voice for context.

I had a bounty-thing to "apprehend" you, but the coppers thought you were only worth 5000 aUEC, so clearly you need to work on being a bad boy :p Same as a LRT bounty, didnt seem worth bringing you in.

Us proper hotas players use voice attack for all that nonsense anyway.

I just can't bring myself to shout at the screen. Although i guess it's like Star Trek where they ask the ships-computer to do things. Dunno the concept just feels to weird to do voice attack.

Sure, but there's nothing actually in-game except to add each org member as a "Friend" specifically?
You can not actually see all org members in a big list or anything?
I joined the D2EA org and cant see anything in-game to help or indicate i'm part of that org.

Oh, and the WorkingSet being red, is that normal please?

More than likely...but you made a point about the framerates, I said for Star Citizen, they matter much less than desync and server lag (and 30k's) for those of us who play it 🤷‍♂️

Its mainly i'm bemoaning my inability to buy a new graphics card. While i'm fine with most games, those that demand a bit more (SC, ED, a few others) remain unplayable for me... and by that i do mean 30 or less FPS in a twitch based game.
