Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

And note, they don't even put the word alpha or early access on their videos any more.

Totally misleading.

Also, remember how the original ED trailer got wrecked for being nothing like the actual gameplay. This video should get the same treatment.
They kind of did did, at the very end. It said "Get early alpha access."

You probably missed it because "PLAYABLE NOW" in huge letters is probably intended to distract you. Which is kind of ironic, considering how often we're told that we're supposed to be testing it, not playing it.

Your original post I was responding to was asking how likely it was large scale pvp events would occur in the event the playerbase got spread out more than the 1 system we currently have.

I think its fair to say, based on my gaming experience that if there's something to draw players into a specific area, and give them something to fight over, the players that like that stuff will be drawn in. We saw this constantly with Elite back in the '1 CG a week era' where despite having the whole proc gen galaxy at their fingers, everyone would be in those systems for a myriad of reasons.

You missed where i said "organic" in my original post ;)

With ED its always the hand of FD generating this stuff. With SC looks like it will be the hand of CIG.

PLAYABLE NOW*

Nope, didnt miss it, just wanted to use ED as an example and it was the easiest thing I could think of.

Talking very specifically 'organically' it also still tracks; albeit using the various BGS wars we had in the first year as the example till folk (and to be clear, this isnt an attempt to start that argument) started taking it away from open and into the relative security of Solo or PG modes.

Give players like this a reason to fight (no matter how innocuous or trivial it may appear to you), and they will, even if just for bragging rights or a novelty hat for their avatar.

Players also stop playing a game when it keeps crashing and is too buggy. Or when there's no point trying to compete with the pay2win stuff. SC will go a similar route like ED, probably more pronounced because there is just one system: There's gonna be a lot of bahooziks about griefing and ganking. Just like FD - they market to PvP and PvE audience and that's not gonna work out if the audiences aren't separated.

Then you intentionally addressed a different point to the one i was making.

Ok

Yeah, pretty much this. MMO creators learned this lesson decades ago. New World had to learn this lesson anew recently, when they tried to make it appeal to both PvPers and PvEers and early feedback was massively negative because PvEers were getting ganked nonstop and the devs had to backpedal.

EvE and Rust work because they are unashamedly positioned as being for PvP where its possible to PvE if you're prepared to get ganked. Anyone playing EvE and crying about getting ganked should be laughed at.

But CIG try and claim that they will implement such systems that it won't be an issue and the faithful lap this doggerel up.

There are two ways it can go:

1) Allow PvPers to get their gank on and it disenfranchises the PvEers.

2) Make the in-game punishment for ganking so draconian it disenfranchises the PvPers.

Things like the jail system doesn't deter the dedicated ganker. They will happily fly around with crimestats and get thrown in jail. They will then quit and load up a second account and get right back to ganking if they get thrown in jail. They will happily destroy their own ship if it means they get to take someone else out in the process.

And the faithful will say "This is why you should always fly in groups with wingmen to protect you" blithly ignoring the fact that many players simply can't afford to always be online and at the beck and call of their fellows. Which then further reduces the pool of people who can actually enjoy the game, making a niche game even more niche.

Games have to decide on which demographic they are going for. You can't go after everyone.

Just thinking about a chain of events. Someone correct me if i'm wrong here, but didn't CIG earlier in the year reveal a new look for the BMM? Then put it on sale, made bank... then said they were shelving development on it to work on other ships?

These lessons aren't learned. The mistakes of MP keep getting made. Maybe because devs with no MP experience try to hop onto the train where the money is. Did FD ever make a MP game? Did Robbers? They're rookie mistakes. Or just taking into account the crash to reap the cash from the audience despite knowing they cant deliver what they claim. Who's gonna complain? When the players find out they usually are beyond the 2h refund period on Steam or whatever refund period they been granted. It's dishonest marketing just like that recent bogus trailer by SC.

You can of course market and develop for several audiences. Just like you can develop for several platforms but it takes additional work and funds. FD can tell a tale about it. SWtoR did have PvP servers and PvP activities sprinkled in PvE server too. I think PvP servers were shut down at some point, despite putting a lot of ressources into.
Fractured Space was PvP moba struggling to get audience. They added PvE mode to make it accessible to wider audience, but we pretty much met in the same lobbies over and over with a pop of 1-3 hundred at primetime.
MP audiences are shy deer and the competition is big. It just doesnt do to deliver crap when you easily can get better stuff, and sunk cost isnt the best player retention.

Moved to concern ;)

Vid highlights:

Using the removed Delamar location for the 'Exploration' clip 😁

Showing ships taking off from a capital ship's interior. (The vaunted Bengal no less?)

That's not the real nightrider. Good trolling account though. Might freak a few people out.
