Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

4.0 as far back as 2016 was labelled the version where they would add a second system. We see CIG not being able to do this, and even LittleAnt suggested that if the tech isn't ready they may add the second system via a main menu option rather than in-system travel.

I still don't get why they couldn't just do a bog standard server switch for a second system, behind some sort of fancy animation, just to be able to brag it's there. Whatever they do will end up being caveated with all the usual "tier 0" excuses anyway, so why not just hack a quick and dirty "temporary" solution like with literally everything else in the game?

That SSD requirement makes me think a little comparison. I happen to have RDR2, and can run it with quite high graphics settings due to me having RTX2060. Now then it is installed on HDD. Works without problems. Only difference between SSD and HDD install is loading times. Tells me something about quality of work I say.

RDR2 is also Vulkan-based, I wonder why CIG claims to be waiting "until Vulkan ships". Sounds to me like they're waiting for Amazon to do the heavy lifting and add it to Lumberyard for them.

Played a bit this afternoon. I wanted to try the mining again and had a few good runs with it. Saved up to buy the impact1 mining head at 50k and went out there again. Computer crashed hard in that session while mining on yela, don’t know what the problem is but anyway, I thought, ok, there goes the money. Had to do some stuff and just came back to it. To my surprise, when I logged in, I was in the prospector landed on yela with my landing gear up. Still had the new mining head and the loot I mined. It even asked in the social panel in mobyglass if I wanted to reconnect to my previous session that I played a few hours ago. Not bad at all.

The recovery after a client crash has been a thing for a while now. If your client crashes it will prompt you to go back into your old server where you were.

This only works if you can get back into the same server you were in when your client crashed. Your old server can fill up in which case you won't be able to recover.

If that happens and you really want to get back to the same server, like you dont want to lose a ship full of cargo, if the rejoin session fails, go into the region select screen like you are going to join a new server and then back out to the menu. You will be prompted again to rejoin session. Keep repeating until you get into your old server or give up.

Yeah, you'd think that handing over to another instance wouldn't be that difficult. They already have multiple instances for the single system, not sure why having even more for a second is so difficult. Maybe they are just waiting for all the art assets - since systems are mostly manually created?

One of the worst things in tech is when someone else is planning to implement something you want - do you wait for them to do it, which might slow you down (but you can get on with other things) - or do you do it yourself (and burn that time - potentially to only throw it away once the 'official' version is done). Either way you can get burned.

Thing is, I didn’t return to the same server. I logged back in 2 or 3 hours later and still had everything.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

The free fly is surprisingly stable...usual minor orgs spamming the global chat looking for new victims to bolster their attempts at global domination...inventory is still as slow as molasses...like the new flight model for the bigger ships...hangar doors still aren't fixed.

Apart from that, business as usual in the PU.

Speaking of big ships, i rather doubt that we'll be seeing any of the Hull ships anytime soon for the simple reason that the cargo mechanics that are supposed to be at the core of their design are completely missing from the picture - even after more than 5 years after their appearance.

I suppose one could EVA around the superstructure clumsily moving and strapping each box in place but the time it would take would probably be longer than the trip itself. Time lost to game-breaking bugs not included of course ⏰

Beautiful design but one that resists any shortcuts in implementation. Not to mention requiring the skills of a truly competent development team.

The issue isn't waiting for Vulkan, it's finishing work on the new Vulkan-shaped renderer. While in theory you could just write a layer to translate everything from the existing renderer to Vulkan commands, that's basically just doing what D3D11 drivers were already doing but with less finesse. To drive Vulkan/D3D12 correctly, you have to more explicitly create a lot of things up-front, add a way to cleanly (and debuggably) set up barriers rather than automatically putting more in than necessary, etc. It's a big task but it's a way better payoff than trying to squeeze a few more milliseconds out of loads of different places.

Love it when you come in and explain tech stuff in context Ben...awesome :)

I'm really loving this little ROC mining buggy. It takes away the former requirement for a Prospector or Mole to be a miner...since now all ship scanners pick up mineable deposits. It's a pretty good little money maker...a lot more lucrative than hand mining and a lot cheaper than buying a prospector. All you need is a Cutty Black or Freelancer, the ROC fits easily in both of them...If I had to vote on the best addition to the entire range of Star Citizen ships/vehicles, it would be the ROC...this little buggy is one of the very few vehicles in SC that already has a gameplay loop and a built in purpose...plus it works rather well for a change.

At which station can you buy them?

And another question for you Mole, what’s the easiest way to reach the asteroid belt between the arccorp and crusader orbits?

Can't buy the ROC in game yet...I melted one of my Ursa rovers for it.

The Aaron halo asteroid belt....I usually fly from Levski (Delamar) to CRU L5 and drop out of QT roughly half way, puts me right in the middle of it. If you look at Stanton in the starmap on the RSi website, it gives you a better idea of where the Aaron halo belt is in relation to the planets etc. It's not really visible on the mobiglas starmap as yet, hence the guesswork involved in getting to it... Delamar isn't in Stanton on the starmap of course, it's in Nyx, but if you roughly imagine Delamar where it currently is in Stanton, it's close to the Pyro jump point on the map.

Eventually...we'll have to cross through the Aaron halo belt via gateway stations to reach the Pyro jump point...if any of it ever appears of course. Usual disclaimers apply. :)

If you're interested in all things mining...The Star Citizen ultimate mining guide is the place to head for...

Some concept art of the proposed Aaron halo belt gateways...they were my favourite Star Citizen dream at one time :D

Unless something significant has changed, you probably logged back into the same server. SC servers can and do stay up for hours sometimes.

That’s possible. I did get a notification in mobiglass though via the f11 menu, not on my hud, asking if I would like to return to the previous session. That was new for me.

CD Project Red should really buy the art assets and put them into a DLC for Cyberpunk - or an entirely new IP. Shame to see them go to waste.

Aye, like some of us at the very beginning of this soap opera...I had a dream of living out there as a Star Citizen version of Belta-Lowda with my prospector...I'm beginning to sound like Martin Luther King... so I'll stop now before I start laughing again :D
