Apparently CIG are hiring a Chinese community manager.

So, SC will be getting a Chinese language translation? Imagine CIG having to invent the tech to display Chinese characters! Its probably never been done before!

It is going to be huge there financially and carry them for years.

I've seen posts saying Chris Roberts wasn't at the event. Must have been their kid, at least we know he always tells the truth.

Seriously! Why is CIG always late to the party?
Games that were being developed around the same time had been released. They're doing things other games had done for ages (loading boxes). now after companies are moving out of China, they're only starting to explore the Chinese market? I wonder if they'll ahve some kind of mobile app next.

That's why I stopped at $600. Yeah, I know, $600 is a heck of a lot of money (especially for me). It was my total pledge over 5 years as I slowly worked my way up to owning a Carrack. Then I sat in my beautiful, big empty ship and realized there was nothing I could really do with it on my own, and that I couldn't really interact with much of anything in it, it was just a lovely museum piece. That was a depressing moment that made me step back and really reconsider what it was I was doing.

Was it worth saving my monthly gaming budget and putting it towards an alpha that even now is so buggy that sometimes I wake up from the bed and fall through the floor despite having relatively modern hardware (including an NVMe SSD)? Not really, no. I've missed out on a lot of games while penny pinching, and what do I have to show for it? My big empty ship in the big empty star system, and whole LOT of promises that are still many years away.

I do believe there are a lot of good people at CIG, I really do. I had a bad experience in SC's chat once, some grade "A" misogyny and bigotry that resulted in a number of players trying to get me banned, and so I took it to a community team member, and she addressed it quickly, and was very supportive. That left a very positive impact on me, but for me the real problem isn't the people trying to do their jobs and make something worth playing, it's the people at the top. As long as Chris Roberts is in charge, this game will never happen. It will never be complete.

I'd like to think that $600 was a very important lesson, and I also think I got off relatively easily considering some of the huge cash piles I've seen people drop on this game that make mine look like a Shake N' Bake coupon in the offering plate.
Damn, too bad you showed up so late. We have a couple people here with ideas how to recoup some of that money. But at the moment it looks like the grey market is run a bit dry. Overall it feels a bit like the scam is coasting on its edge at the moment. Might still take some time before it finally implodes, though.

A little summary I found interesting

-always something to do (schedule of activities to do almost by hours)
-competitive ranking (not high ranking on a server, switch server)
-upgrades (pay to win is good)
-clear goals in game (separate one for whales and free players)
-not designed for people who like open world

-low barrier to entry
-linked to facebook/social network (launch on multiple platforms)
-some have built in bots (afk mode)
-World of Tanks does well in China

-quantity vs quality (100s of games a year, copying each other)
-100-200 servers per week
-make quick money before obsurity (ROI in weeks)
-sever rapid decline after first week
-$10mil+ per month, short lifespan
-a lot of AAA western games tried to get into China and failed.

Where Star Citizen is about the new ships, Chinese games are all very similar and are about the new servers. It's a platform for competition and the whales pay to be the top player on the server. Enhance eqipment to progress in the game rather than play the game to improve equipments. I don't know if this will work with Star Citizen. Maybe the sever wipes will work like a new server, I don't know. How do you rank players in Star Citizen.

The fact Chinese games are designed for browser and low hardware requirment alone is going to limit Star Citizen in the Chinese market.

Too many design phylosophies are counter to western market and game design. It'll be interesting to see how well CIG does in China.

I mean, it’s not like SC has been hidden from the Chinese gaming market until now, no? So what’s changed?
Probably CIG changed, needing new avenue for money? Without understanding the market it seems (see above)
I'm pretty sure it's not Chris Robert's or Sandi's idea. Can't see them thinking that far ahead.

<tinfoil>Would be crazy if the NCTP originated from CIG marketing dept as a viral campaign just before they announce Pyro is in the game at citizencon

Yeah I was thinking that the NCTP focus serves CIG's purposes very well. Presuming they can at least hit PTU for Q4 / Q1.

There are still plenty of 'No Cash Til Release' types about though. And the standard ritual of glossy Pyro vids and broken builds probably won't work its magic on them. (They wont partake in the standard $$$ concept sale. Too many 'why was this marketing shell built instead of the BMM?' questions will arise...)

Reckon CIG will take some heat out of the storm with PyroCon v3 all told though.

(Which just means more comedy down the line when the Rastar bases sink into the soil ;))
