Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Here's a question-
Is Star Citizen better than Elite? as a space simulator/game or do they have the same potential.
Pug
As a space simulator Elite runs rings around Star Citizen. No other game I know of comes even close. Frontier have modelled a 1:1 galaxy, 1:1 solar systems and implemented correct (as far as 2-body simulations go) orbital mechanics. I also prefer the "planes in space" flight model over "turrets in space", partly from personal preference (I've always been more a flight sim gamer than an FPS gamer), and partly from my superficial knowledge of biology - my understanding that people tolerate pitch G-forces much better than yaw (lateral) G-forces.

I played No Mans Sky when it came out. I think the release game was actually quite good, if you ignore the hype that no game could ever live up to. Since then I have re-started multiple times, usually playing for quite a few play sessions before dropping it (usually back to Elite). I've decided the reason is that while the early planet surface gameplay is quite good, the 'space' part of NMS is horrible. The planets are scaled, don't rotate, don't move, there's no orbital mechanics, the 'sun' is a skybox light source, the 'space' is full of asteroids, etc. It's not space at all, not for me anyway.

Star Citizen is between NMS and Elite. There's only one system, no orbital mechanics, the planets don't move, they do rotate, and the 'sun' is an actual object. Both the system and planets are scaled (differently!) and that just leaves me with that creepy not-quite-right feeling as I'm transitioning between space and planet surface.

For me, the potential of the games is the same. However, Frontier have built the better foundation. They've done 'space' right with few compromises, which is critical for a space game. They correctly (IMHO) decided that on-foot gameplay was important, but not critical. They're also happy to produce good-enough graphics and upgrade them later - I'm thinking about the planetary surface upgrades they've shown for Odyssey here.

I'm also much happier that Frontier is a successful business, with multiple successful games released. All the games help the business grow and support each other. I would be surprised if the technology and assets Frontier have developed for Jurassic World Evolution and Planet Zoo don't make their way onto Earth-like worlds on Elite, eventually.

I'm not getting into the fun in multiplayer argument except to post this...from a game that has both all the content that SC wishes it had... and when it comes down to game bugs and dodgy physics, it says to Star Citizen "Hold my beer."

Some of my finest hours in muliplayer gaming have been spent in this buggy mess with janky physics...I wouldn't have missed it for the world :)

"That wasnt friendly was it?"
"I hope not"

Edit: Ninjaed!

:ROFLMAO:

Im still playing Squad over here. Can relate. Love multiplayer, the funny moments are the ice on the cake.

The art team was aware but went ahead and used it anyway, but then they will remove it for the live version.

Yup, sounds about right for CIG. Except for when they choose to blatantly ignore trademarks/IP. Like with Star Kitty.
War crimes are just good business, and that's what CI¬G is all about after all…

There's a reason why I keep harping on about the competence and general moral compass (specifically, the lack of both) at the company: because they have a veeeerry long history of showing exactly that. It's why I no longer buy the whole “yeah, the coders are horrible, but at least the art is good” line of thinking — the artists demonstrate the same unawareness of their trade as the coders do to the point where it generated its own SC meme. The whole company is just rotten to the core.

What is their problem?! There is a perfectly acceptable table to stand on right in front of them!

Shakes his head disapprovingly:
NPCs these days...

Someone on reddit asks if the use of the red cross on the new medical gun is in breach of trademark.
...
However, they are actually correct. The Red Cross does protect its trademark.
Whoa there, FUDster! The point is moot because SC uses Red Plus, not Red Cross!

And dont forget to pick up a fleece blanket
I just have to ask: is that blanket in top 1% of all blankets out there?

Now, i find this a bit silly. Its pervasive symbol. Its like how people call vacuum cleaners hoovers or diamond head screwdrivers phillips screwdrivers. There reaches a point where as an organization you just have to accept that that you've lost control of your trademark.

It is not a "trade"mark. The Red Cross does not peddle its services. It is not a business but an internationally recognised neutral entity flying its own colours. It does so to indicate its presence and give combatants and authorities an opportunity to recognise it as such.

Ok, pedantry aside, the point stands. Its a protected symbol that CIG should not have used in the first place... especially if the art team was aware.

It is a recurring problem since Doom or so. The health kits and the red cross scream first aid. On one hand you can't blame some dev to know about intricacies of protexted symbols and emblems, on the other hand it's been cropping up multiple times with other games to make at least someone on the team who was busy doing dev work aware. But maybe none of those who call shots were. Like Moni Z.

Agreed. For me though its not that they used it, or even management didn't know. But its how they responded saying the art team did know, but they used the symbol anyway. Unless he meant to say they had been made aware after.

This is an example of what I posted a week or 3 ago. You go into ED and other games to play the game then you can go into SC to chat about it. SC is the bar you go to after having a soccer match.

But you see the point that a few of us are trying to make, yes? You can crack jokes in any chat system. You can go to a pub, or even a comedy show in real life even. You and your pals are the entertainment..I mean, you're enjoying time with friends...not something new and exclusive to SC. But then to go and advertise how fun having fun chat is, something you can do in most games that have multiplayer is? Is your hope really that more people will join the call and give them more money? Why?

I think something got lost in translation, but then it's becoming a bit too long and off-topic, so I'll try to leave it at that after this post. I don't play SC, and have no particular intention to join the call until the day it releases. And even then, it'll depend on what it's like, and if I find it in me to reward what are imho deeply unethical funding practices. I'm still amused by the circus and curious to see where it goes.

I'm only talking up the virtues of mass (and generally pvp) multiplayer, following some comments on the downsides of that kind of gameplay. Not in SC of course, since it can't handle it. And yes, I can chat outside of a game. But there is an additional element of togetherness when it's connected to a game where we all work together. It's a lot more than a world chat. It's like pineapple and pizza: you can enjoy them separately, but put them together and... wait... no, I meant ham and cheese. Anyhow... The closest ED came to that for me was my time with the Torval crowd in PP (as an additional parallel, PP is akin to mass pvp side-modes in mmos in that you'd better enjoy it for itself since you're not getting any worthwhile in-game reward for it).

Arguably, most people don't get that vibe, since as popular as mass pvp is, it is a small crowd compared to PvE and small scale/solo/competitive/omgesports pvp. So if it's nothing more than a chat to you, I can't blame you, that's how most people tend to feel about it. :)

I think it is hard to get going and organised and quite easy to fall apart, because you have to coordinate so many. Longest I stuck with was Napoleonic line battles in a Warband mod. It incolved some basic drills and frequent attendance and that is already hard to keep up.
