Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Are the planets in SC procedurally generated? If not how can they add the promised 100+ planets if each planet requires lots of storage space for the assets?

They're literally everything at once ;)

  • They started with proc gen planets
  • CR decided they weren't pretty enough, so they moved to 'proc gen' biome painting tools. Essentially authored surfaces.

  • By 2023, despite merrily optimising to their final, greatest, 'Planet Tech V4' iteration, they still only had a few solar systems sketched out in art. [Pyro, Nyx etc]. So they're now looking at Machine Learning to speed up the process... Planet Tech V5...

It is a loading screen with minigame, like so many others 🤷‍♂️ . ...
I'm always a bit surprised that anyone minds too much about 'loading screens'. As long as they don't break the flow or proliferate intrusively, then I'm never bothered.

For example EDs hyperspace jump 'loading screen' fits into the gameplay in a manner that feels coherent. Whereas Starfield's loading-screen 'per door' feels unnatural and jars for me every time.

Funny thing is, someone made a mod for Starfield that removed a ton of loading screens, showing that a lot of them aren't even necessary.

Here you go:

And there are a few other mods that reduce or disguise the loading screen and one that allows real flight in systems between planets without cutscenes.

Business outlook -

Pros
  • Great office in a nice location
  • Great city to live in. Relatively affordable property market compared to south of England
  • Interesting projects if you can look past the jank and technical pain points
  • Nice people to work with from all over the world
  • Flexible work hours

Cons
  • Toxic work culture including periods of enforced overtime/crunch
  • Terrible production practices. Any planning for sprints or milestones are meaningless and get thrown out the window constantly with ever changing priorities
  • Long term salary freezes based on sales performance
  • Ego driven executive management with unrealistic and impractical expectations

Advice to Management
Leave your ego at the door and listen to the people you've hired who are experts in their fields.
