Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

....and that's the only counter argument they have left. Poor things 😔

Well, they can somewhat fall back on the more detailed starports and somewhat better graphics on ships, although i'd suggest ED's newest ships are now rivaling some of SC's designs, especially the older ships in SC which are starting to show their age. Plus we have ship kits, which SC doesn't have.

Somehow...I can't ever imagine feeling the urge to stick a 1970's style boot spoiler or extended wheel arches to my Cutty Black :whistle:

SC ships tend have to have way to many fins, wings and external rotary doobery-ferkins pre fitted as it is...mind you, I miss my spikey Reaper bits I had fitted to my Python. Between the 2 games, the Cutty Black and the Python are still the Jack of all trades ships...with adaptability for the likes of mining being absent in SC of course. If I could fit some mining lasers or scavenging gear to my Cutty Black, believe me, I'd be a happy man...

At the end of the day, SC and ED are completely different games with vastly different design philosophies (good or bad) when all's said and done so there's no exchanging like for like between them as much as we all seem to want or imagine. My ideal space game would be an amalgamation of the best bits of both...which outside of a perfect game wishlist, ain't never happening 🤷‍♂️

Talking about ships though, they're also the only ships in either game I've never sold or traded. That Python, like my Cutty Black in SC, are still the original ones I bought/aquired and never traded up to move on to something else :)

For sure. NMS also has its own style, which is very nice in its own way, but people disparage that as well.

But it is funny how faithful SC backers have to point to a dwindling supply of things SC does that ED doesn't, despite CIG having way more money and staff and should, in theory, be releasing new stuff at a much faster rate (other than ships).

Unlike some ED players, I don't particularly care about ship interiors in ED, but i'd love to see the reaction of SC faithful should FD ever add them to ED.

I could say exactly the same about some ED faithfuls...six and two threes. There's always been (and always will be) a 'Can't see the wood for the trees' mentality on both sides of that tribal boundary for some. ;)

My own and entirely personal opinion about ship interiors when it comes to ED...FDev could have rendered Ci~G's core marketing and SC as a game/competitor almost entirely irrelevant overnight, they chose not to...for whatever reason. Will FDev realistically ever add functional ship interiors to ED given their reluctance to even acknowledge it's impact?

No.

That said...ED as a game and given the original core design philosophy...doesn't require ship interiors. It was designed and released without them at it's heart, despite early hints toward their addition or whether they're wanted or not. For SC, it's a core design function, the entire game was built around having a human avatar interacting with the ships inside and out. The absence of ship interiors in ED also doesn't detract in any way from the function or appeal of the game...SC couldn't function as a game without them, regardless of opinion to whether they're necessary or not...

Totally ignoring Ci~G's business practises, it's no secret that I've never viewed SC and ED as competitors for my attention... being that they're entirely different as games. I've always looked on them as complimenting eachother, both of them satisfying a certain need for me as a gamer and fan of both...but that's me 🤷‍♂️

Take a look at the "release view" (totally not a roadmap you naughty roadmap watchers!).

Love how it goes 4.1 in first half of this year followed by 1.0 at some undefined point in the future. Anyone taking bets on whether after 4.1 there will be a 4.2 and 4.3, etc?

The responses are very predictable

I liked this one...

...game elements that aren't backed up by meaningful gameplay loops tend to be abandoned by most players because it's not efficient in their playtime (a multi-player game peer pressure thing).
For single-player games it's cool for it to be optional, for multi-player however it gets problematic quickly where iterating on the feature or even just maintaining it becomes a waste of money for the developers.

Everything being disjointed is a big problem however; and it's more or less baked into the development philosophy of...

Whoa, if this is true things can be very popcorn worthy. 4.0 stuff moved to 1.0, and a pretty much empty next patch that can even be pushed to June?

There you go, classic case of roadmap watching. This is going to slow down the developers even more!

Anyway, weren't more developers moved over to SC since SQ42 is now in polish? Surely the content floodgates will open soon!

CIG's defence is that the stuff in 1.0 can be moved back into interim patches, and is just there temporarily and tentatively ;)

But yeah the brass tacks are that there's not much in the Q1/Q2 beyond 'narrative' missions and the Volt gun. (And a bunch of the pushed features were supposed to arrive during 2024 etc).

It does have a comparatively 'maintenance mode' feel at the moment. (Along with the more standard bait-and-switch ;))

There's no bet about it. The 1.0 view is the wishlist for everything yet to be done before its release. Some cards then get moved to the left into a 4.1, 4.2, etc., while some cards will move to the right into upcoming 1.1, 1.2, etc.

The bet would be over which cards get dropped when. :cool:

If they follow their previous pattern, they'll hype up 1.0 and all the features it will have right until release week, when it will be decided that a few features need more work and were moved to 1.0.X patches.

"You have 1000 employees.... what are they doing?"

Making showreels and polishing their cvs most likely, like a lot of people in the games industry at the moment. Apart from Roberts and his mates, who probably spend most of their time browsing high-end property listings and yacht catalogues.

Someone noticed this. A ton of teams got prefixed with 'Z-Archive'. (At least 6months back I think).

Including the definitely defunct Firesprite team:

Example mystery Z-Archive prefix for teams_incl Firesprite.PNG

It's a huge list of teams. Seems to genuinely just be an archive of all the dusty dev that's been lost in time ;)

The great updaten-ing has happened. And Shiny is there for us :)

As usual I may be misreading some of this, but my hot takes are:

Lotsa unsurprising extensions:

Base Building

2024-02-29 => 2025-10-30
  • End date has been extended from 2024-12-29 to 2025-10-30

Crafting

2023-12-31 => 2025-08-28
  • End date has been extended from 2024-12-29 to 2025-08-28

Engineering

2023-12-31 => 2025-05-29
  • End date has been extended from 2024-08-14 to 2025-05-29

Life Support

2021-04-18 => 2025-05-29
  • End date has been extended from 2024-07-30 to 2025-05-29

Charge/Drain

2021-02-28 => 2025-05-29
  • End date has been extended from 2024-08-30 to 2025-05-29

FPS Radar / Scanning

2021-01-03 => 2025-05-29
  • End date has been extended from 2024-11-14 to 2025-05-29

New things! (?)

Radiation

2024-09-30 => 2025-05-30

The following team(s) were assigned:
  • SC & SQ42 - Core Gameplay Pillar began work 2024-09-30
    1 tasks (3% load)

Sure hope that's not SQ42 feature unlocking...

(Unless this is a fresh start on the Pyro sun radiation stuff that never made it past the Citcon demo etc?)

Plus many REDACTED mission givers etc.

---

And some of the things CIG mark as 'done for this run' are a bit wobbly ;)

Mission System Refactor

2024-05-31 => 2024-09-29

  • SC & SQ42 - Core Gameplay Pillar freed up 121 days of work

On Spectrum (other games section), the topic of ED's colonization comes up.

The responses are very predictable, largely

"But ship interiors!"

More evidence that Yamik's viewerbase is mainly comprised of Elite bitter exes and Star Citizen copes.

EDIT: +1 for the commenter who pointed out that Empyrion's ship interiors do actually bring a lot to the game vs being just "glorified logout spots" lol.
