AWS isn't tied to Lumberyard. Afaik, ED uses AWS, too.The LY switch was about getting access to source code for free, and relying on AWS.
Anything hot on page 3?Big news in SC lore!

New United: Imperator Addison Still Settling into New Role - Roberts Space Industries | Follow the development of Star Citizen and Squadron 42
Roberts Space Industries is the official go-to website for all news about Star Citizen and Squadron 42. It also hosts the online store for game items and merch, as well as all the community tools used by our fans.robertsspaceindustries.com
Which is actually... not really much news at all. On a par with "Rain in England today"
While we wait for entertaining SC content (like XenoThreat being pushed back again?)

Sure. Yet that's what's been implied back then : https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...dron-42-Utilize-Amazon-Lumberyard-Game-EngineAWS isn't tied to Lumberyard. Afaik, ED uses AWS, too.
“We’ve been working with Amazon for more than a year, as we have been looking for a technology leader to partner with for the long term future of Star Citizen and Squadron 42,” said Chris Roberts, CIG’s CEO and creative director. “Lumberyard provides ground breaking technology features for online games, including deep back-end cloud integration on AWS and its social component with Twitch that enables us to easily and instantly connect to millions of global gamers. Because we share a common technical vision, it has been a very smooth and easy transition to Lumberyard. In fact, we are excited to announce that our just released 2.6 Alpha update for Star Citizen is running on Lumberyard and AWS.”
Switching to Lumberyard so many years ago was supposed to be the miracle solution for cloud computing and "server meshing". See how that goes now we are in 2021...
???
Switching to LY was only to cut the bond with Crytek on the legal aspect. The code of LY was exactly the same that the code of the CE version used before.
Going forward we will utilize the features of Lumberyard that make sense for Star Citizen. We made this choice as Amazon’s and our focus is aligned in building massively online games that utilize the power of cloud computing to deliver a richer online experience than would be possible with an old fashioned single server architecture (which is what CryNetwork is).
Looking at Crytek's roadmap and Amazon's we determined that Amazon was investing in the areas we were most interested in. They are a massive company that is making serious investments into Lumberyard and AWS to support next generation online gaming. Crytek doesn't have the resources to compete with this level of investment and have never been focused on the network or online aspects of the engine in the way we or Amazon are. Because of this combined with the fact we weren't taking new builds of CryEngine we decided that Amazon would be the best partner going forward for the future of Star Citizen.
This confirmed?
I see. I didn't know that.Other way around. Lumberyard is tied to AWS. If you use Lumberyard and you want to use "cloud" servers, you have to use AWS.
As you enjoy a lot FOIP videos, a good video demonstrating how the FOIP work in SC and how to calibrate it to not have rond eyes (at 3:40)
What? Isn't that the point of FOIP? I thought it transmits little window of your face to comm-partner.great, one of the few thing that works in SC and it's because it has not been developed by CIG.
It is a shame that you can see it only on videos while other people online don't see anything.

I'm with you, I could add "but we will have to see if that actually happens". But it's not very practical if I have to add it to each of my sentences.Well, if you are just going to parrot CIG's words then it might be best to disclaim it by saying "CIG say" and the suffix it with "but we will have to see if that actually happens" to add an appropriate level of distrust. Otherwise we will simply assume that you believe what CIG say.
Let's face it, you do seem to trust a lot of what CIG says, despite years of things they have said never actually happening, which should give anyone a healthy dose of skepticism, even if you are a fan and hoping for its success.
Perhaps some cultists have misunderstood what the switch was in reality but for what I've read of CIG, it was pretty clear (more details below).Lets not rewrite history...
This was supposed to be the silver bullet to server meshing, unlimited players, etc. Not really in the mood (or having enough free time) to go through the post history for that but that was what CiG and their cultists were telling at the time. It may be before you got into SC though.
The main reason for the switch to LY was purely legal.Dodging contractual obligations was probably one thing driving the decision, sure. But here is what Chris said it was about...
That's as rational as believing a certain billionaire won an election.I trust CIG when they say they work on something.
IMHO, horse manure and history rewriting. An important point that was confirmed by a dev (don't remember which one) :
"Going forward we will utilize the features of Lumberyard that make sense for Star Citizen."
This dev said that CIG had made a lot of strong modifications in the core of the version of CE/LY they were using. They were unable to follow the versionning of CE/LY. When they want to use a new feature of LY, they have to extract it of LY to be able to integrate it in their engine. They also said that when they recruit a new dev, knowing LY was not needed, nor really useful.
What CR talk about here is mainly AWS accessed though CE and it is just the basic reality of what CE/AWS network functionnalites offer compared to CE. I see no lie or magic here. He said that LY was a better choice than CE for the future, not that LY will magically resolve all CIG troubles about server meshing/network/etc.
We're going to have this sort of mesh of servers, so we'll be able to have, hopefully, a large amount of players all in the same area, so we won't have to instance it, in the way that originally we were thinking we'd have to instance it. We have a kind of different server design now that could potentially have thousands of players all in the same sort of area at the same time, which would be really cool. Because that's something that again, it's not something that you could get a while, y'know, a year ago or ten years ago, but you know with sort of the newer tech, the power of the machines, kind of some of the stuff you can do in the cloud, the possibility is sort of opened up and you want to utilize it
So get back the history, I will apology if I was wrong.IMHO, horse manure and history rewriting.
