Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Backers are still being asked to pay for it's development

And that is yet another point. Go ask about SQ42 on reddit or Spectrum and a majority will say they don't care about it. They only care about SC itself.

But criticise the development speed and watch how many say "Its because their efforts are focused on SQ42!" as a defense. (Which in itself is funny, because if they are focused on SQ42, then where the hell is it?)

So, many backers are giving money for CIG to develop a game they don't care about.

Now, present that argument and watch the response be that both games share a lot of common tech and assets.... which then undermines the response of why SC's dev is going so slowly, if both share a lot of common effort.

You can play some nice games of mental gymnastics with some backers :p

No surprise there.

But it brings us right back to the core of what a lot of this is all about.

Either you are fine with someone lying to you while asking you for money or you don't believe they have lied.
I still play EDO too, as i'm sure you will if they ever get around to optimising it.

Indeed, but i don't defend FD for the buggy release or excuse their lying about expected performance. And its the only instance since the days of offlinegate where I would say FD knowingly lied to players. Meanwhile, CIG has built its entire funding model around building expectations based on lies and fairy dust.

Remember, CIG were meant to be different. They were not meant to be like the big bad publishers. And right, they aren't, they are worse!

SQ42 is in dev and not ready for release (as should have been EDO).
Maybe you can answer a question that has been bothering me for some time, as I wait patiently. How much work (in terms of scope) is required to finish Squadron 42? I am not asking about time, I am asking about content and features. Unfortunately the most transparent developer ever was not able to produce the answer so far.

Nobody on reddit knows either.

Because the question was "Why SQ42 not released ?". I'm polite, I answer the question.

ED bad! Therefore SC good!
Or ED bad, so its ok for SC to also be bad!
Never quite sure what the point is when people do this.
It's a little pleasure from time to time because a lot of posters here were awaiting EDO to tell SC players "look how good EDO is, how a game should be developped and how a dev company should treat it's customers". Too bad, the state of EDO and the way FDEV released it prevent those posts. EDO is not the SC killer some were claiming.

When I read some EDO review or analysis in the other parts of this forum there is a lot of material that I could post here related directly or indirectly to SC, some of them bringing SC in a good light. Some ED players start to understand why SC takes so long to develop and why CIG have made some gameplay choices. But it's too easy and I try not to pollute this thread. There is some low hanging fruits (like the "Armstrong moment" of the Yamiks) that could bring some nice analysis of how SC handle this but I'm not sure you really want to discuss those elements here.

Sidenote : after having read your posts (and others) on the other part of this forum, I've also decided to wait the console release before trying EDO.

I think they have something they could release but CR is wanting more and still add things to the game and rework some parts.

No it's not the majority. We talk more about SC because we can play SC but for me and others SQ42 is more important. A lot have backed for the solo game, not the multi.

A game that's been in development with this amount of cash raised, you'd think the people "playing" that game wouldn't be so pre-occupied with EDO.

An expansion pack that had 2 years of development on a fraction of the budget seems to have been somewhat disruptive in the SC community.

Has it?

I have been trying to get my SC friends to give Horizons a chance, especially now that you can get it cheap or free.

Most of them watched video content, read up about it, made some effort, one actually installed it and played it, he enjoyed it to some extent, but playing the game through his cockpit screens he felt trapped, but he could see the potential in EDO, so he preordered that.
He is disappointed, disappointed in its performance, in how it looks and how limited and still restricted it is, he has a few hours in it and stopped playing it.

The rest of them are pragmatic in how EDO has turned out and how poorly its been received by even its own fans. They still have zero interest in it.

My hope was that EDO would have a tangible effect on SC, because i think CIG need the competition.

EDO has had no effect on SC.

Delivery.

No argument from me.

Oh yeah there's alot of upset backers...After the EDO announcement there were videos popping up on YouTube from SC fans pretending to take a balanced view, with various people seeming pretty upset about it. EDO was destined to be "crappy" long before we saw any gameplay. They aren't looking at many other games and saying "oh look at this, here's why its not very good and here's what it MEANS for SC" etc.

Meanwhile, people are pointing at NMS etc. on this forum and saying "hey Frontier change your business model and change your communication etc", they aren't however pointing at SC and saying "here is how you SHOULD do FPS in a space game". Considering the extreme budget, shouldn't SC be the one leading the way?

I have already seen TheYamkists video, he is a large ED content creator and thinks the idea that EDO will kill SC is a helarious one, he thinks that idea is idiotic, and this was before EDO was actually released, his criticisms of the released game are probably well know on this forum.

I'm not watching everything you posted there, i will watch Morthologis, he is one of the largest SC content creators, i will add my response after having watched his EDO video's.

What did CIG lie about?
Apart from Answer The Call 2016, let's revisit this interview from June 2018:

"In terms of an instance, right now we can put about 50 players in an instance. That will go up, but the final plan is obviously once we get the server meshing in — that won’t be this year, but that will be coming in next year - that will allow everyone to play in one huge instance with all the players. The servers will patch people from place to place. You can have 200 people in a room, and when they leave that room, another server takes over. When they take off into space, another server takes over. But the goal is to have everyone in the same instance."

Now, this is not Chris "yes, this will be in the game as well" Roberts. This is Erin Roberts, the Global Head of Production and the Studio Director of Foundry 42 UK. A person with actual track record of delivery in the industry. In the second half of 2018 he is saying that a certain piece of technology is going to be delivered by the end of 2019. This piece of technology is still not there, and probably won't be, at the end of 2021.

Do you think he was just mistaken? That a person with his experience and position would be this incompetent? Or was he knowingly misrepresenting the reality of where the technology was?

I'm not asking you to watch those videos (it was just a general YT search) it was just to show that there was much discussion and disruption in the SC communicty concerning Odyssey's launch because it overlapped with SC in scope.

Do you want me to flood this forum with EDO players pointing what SC is doing better ? Even one saying "I spite on SC but..."

They are making it up as they go. As long as the cash keeps flowing all they need do is paint the sky with promises that won't need to be kept.

I think you are missing my point so I'll make it one more time with no follow up..

A game with the length of development time and extensive post Holywood blockbuster budget of Star Citizen should not be disrupted by small/medium tier add-ons from niche market developers using budget mo-cap rig at home... it should be the undisputed "best damn space game" right?
