Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Question of the day - is SC all "locked up" like Elite is (obfuscated files and directories), or is it more open like Space Engineers? Sorry to always compare to SE, but y'all know it's a passion game of mine. I ask because I don't much like SC's skybox, but if I could replace it with my own, that would be really nice.

Not sure on this. (Maybe one of the guys who actually has it installed can have a look for you? ;))

Lots of file diving gets done by 'leakers' every patch for sure. (See the menial vending gameplay example). Sounds from the chat there that some stuff is just accessible in folders.

There are certainly hacks / cheats out there. (Insta-kill, no clip flying avatars etc). Although an anti-cheat service recently got introduced. (Which also limited other 3rd party stuff, such such as a vorpX, and some VR tweaks to shaders.)

Ultimately I've never seen anyone using a bespoke skybox or similar. But shaders themselves seem like they work.

You'll forgive me if I don't take opinions in this thread at face-value, as many here have an unhealthy obsession with the game (in a tilting windmills sort of way). But I do appreciate people answering my very specific, objective questions as I work to form my own opinion! If there was a separate "Active Players Of Star Citizen" thread, I would have asked my questions there to avoid triggering folk.
I wouldn't call it an unhealthy obsession with the game. What it could be, at most, is a reaction to and a focus on an abomination that possibly could spread to other games and business. They tout the amounts of money they have made, without producing what was promised. In fact, they're removing stuff from their roadmap, and they just seem to get even more money. Do you want that to happen to SE? Would you be happy if SE had the same business model? Or would you be shocked or upset by that? Or you cant even imagine that happening? Well, all they have to do is start selling pictures of ships and telling you "its coming next year". That's it! The number of threads this has generated here is ultimately a call to attention. CIg should either release the game or just take their money and run. And, I think if they did release it, they'd actually make more money. Or do they think it would flop?

As to whether it's a game or alpha...I've noticed some of the time, even supporters of SC call it a game. Also, others have migrated to it from other games...so they must be migrating to a game. And then there are those who want to critique it, as they would any other game. So, in all cases, if only for part of the time, SC is recognized as a game. So SC is a game, and has been for a while, even if their login says otherwise. That being the case...

#1 - I cant keep calling it a scam, since it's a game.
#2 - SC, as a game, sucks and whatever they're planning to put into it, is impossible. As a moneymaker, though, a it's a huge success but I hope that success doesn't spread elsewhere...or else lots of money being made, with no return, will become the normal.

JackFrags playing with his Twitcher pals again...

(It's hard to know which rant to pick out from the stream about how utterly 'scuffed' the game is. There are various... Mostly made while re-shopping for stuff after the last explosion or crash ;))

Looking at that link you posted, I think thats associated with the 'prison' missions for reducing your sentence time.

Ach, it's not that any magic gains mean nothing. More like:

  • If it actually does pan out in the PU, then any gains are gonna get monstered again by new stuff they've been blocked from adding.
  • Like let's say these are indeed 'Gen 12' gains. CPUs are running free-er, and GPUs are no longer bottlenecked by them.
  • CIG add a load of stupidly big boxes for the 'cargo refactor'. Whole new worlds of physics collision and clippage are opened up. Player CPUs tank again when anywhere near them. (Or CIG add giant ship interiors, and CPUs tank again, only this time in space! Because they're streaming all the assets off your SSD all the live-long day, just like cities. Or whatever. There's so much CIG have still got to add ;))
  • Everything acts like poop again. Just a new flavour of poop.

Same goes for Server Meshland or what have you. They up server performance. Merrily add higher player caps and the 'NPCs walking around ships and planets aimlessly' feature. Everything goes to poop again.

[Disclaimer: I have no idea whether the above features actually impinge on the server or client etc. But just like Chris finds a way to spend all the money, I'm sure CIG will find a way to max them both out ;)]
