Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I guess you all know this video, right? Looks like you need a lot of patience and humour to play this alpha. But all bugs aside, there's a lot that I find quite appealing. I like games that don't try to be nice to me... However, the bugs would still be a bit too heavy for me at the moment.

It's actually not as negative as you might think (and quite entertaining!). But before you decide to buy, watch this video to see what you're getting into (this is from 01.04.2022):

"On the seventh day I rested...Well actually, I got lost in Lorville....which is like resting but a lot more aggravating."

🤣

I am heartened to see folks having fun in Star Citizen. I wouldn't buy it yet because of a few of the comments he made in the video. They were a delivered a little offhandedly, which made me think he was less bothered about them than I would be

The main one was that he grinded a good ship then lost it in a wipe a couple of days later. There's no point in me playing the game if any progress I make will be wiped

Another one was when he said he couldn't pick up a package, but he wasn't sure if it was a bug or something he was doing wrong. I'm a terrible player who always makes mistakes. I hate that uncertainty when I have a feeling at the back of my mind that I'm doing everything right, and there may be a bug stopping me doing what I want to do

So for me it wouldn't just be a case of waiting for the game to be released. I'd be waiting for reviews of the game to say that it isn't riddled with bugs

I actually had time to watch it, and one thing that stood out for me was this: rental timers elapse in real time. Real time. I frequently don’t have time to play this kind of game for several non-contiguous hours a week, let alone a for a seven hour stretch.

clears throat Well, the game is clearly not meant for people like you.

Which is a pity, because when I Kickstarted the game, it was. A "spiritual successor" to Privateer with a Wing Commander introductory campaign? To be ready by 2014? "Hurry up and take my money!"

Ten years, half a billion dollars, two dozen shell companies, one mansion in LA for Chris Roberts, and one successful refund later...

There's no release in sight, most of the game loops I'm interested in are either broken or non-existent, and the game design includes mechanisms that IMO punish time-poor players. And yet I still hold on to a vague hope that maybe, some day, Star Citizen will release as a game I want to play. But I wouldn't be surprised if it never releases at all. Disappointed? Yes. But not surprised.

You can try it the next free fly that should come around may 20th.
The free flies are a most excellent idea from Star Citizen. It's a great way to check to see if yer machine's up to the task of running the game

But I won't be taking them up on the offer yet. My SSD isn't exactly a very large drive so I'll wait at least until they confirm they've finished with gamewipes

Were you refunded the entirety of your kickstarter money?
Yes. I had to point out that I'd never once started the game, and thus had never agreed to the changed Terms of Service that would've denied me a refund.

I used that money to buy (during Steam Sales) Surviving Mars, Space Engineers, and No Man's Sky. I got my money's worth on all three, even if I decided after about 30 hours of NMS wasn't a game I'd enjoy long-term.

Surviving Mars fell very flat but I liked it for a chill building with the soundtrack. which fitted very well to the game. I think it was kinda too easy or too annoying. And the limited number of maps was very disappointing. Probably my main gripe - I'd have looked for interesting vistas to build on otherwise.

So I do wonder, sincerely, how many people jaded over Star Citizen are early adopters? In other words, are there any in this thread who love to hate SC who only recently tried the game for themselves for the first time? It just seems to me that people new to SC are much more positive about it, but I think they are buying into what SC is, not what SC was promised to be 10 years ago when it was first pitched.

I'm not saying that early adopters have no right to be salty. I'm salty that Elite Dangerous is nowhere near what Braben "promised" (and even demonstrated) during his Kickstarter videos (though not enough to complain about 100 times a day for all eternity, LOL). I also see many of the flaws in the way SC is being developed, and there's definitely some mockery-worthy decisions (swirling coffee in your virtual cup is my gold standard).

Anyway, just curious.

I've logged nearly a thousand hours into it, primarily because it's a chill building game with a soundtrack I sometimes find myself dancing to. ;) It's the kind of game I'll play when I have stuff I need to pay some attention to at home, but not so much that I can't react to problems in the game.

It's also a rather rare game where I felt like chasing the achievements and challenges.

I recently decided to buy the "Below and Beyond" and "Martian Express" DLCs. I've found "Below and Beyond" to require far too much micro-managing for the niche it fills in my gaming queue, while the "Martian Express" adds monorails to the game, which have just enough disadvantages to make the decision to use them an interesting one, rather than a no-brainer.

I'm not so much jaded by the game itself. Sure, I'm disappointed that it still isn't in a playable state, but if there was a sale of the base game for around $20, I'd be willing to pick it up. I'm not a fan of some of the game mechanisms added to the game over the years, but there's still enough of a game there that I would, in theory at least, like. At least that now that I have a high-end machine, I'm willing to give the Free Fly weeks a try.

As I've seen in NMS, sometimes livestreams and lets plays aren't reflective of how I'd play and enjoy the game. At least with the next Free Fly, I'm familiar enough with the game to know that the starting areas are not starting player friendly. :rolleyes:And won't get distracted by all the unnecessary (IMO) details. ;)

What has me jaded about CIG is the obvious plundering of this crowd funded project by Chris Roberts, his brother Erin, his (once secret) wife Sandi Gardiner, and his long-time friend and business partner Freyermuth Ortwin. One only has to dive into published (by law) financials of its UK shell company to see that the Roberts Clan has squirreled away nearly 10% of the funding directed into that single shell company alone. It wasn't always that way, but over the years, the plundering has gotten extremely blatant, which culminated last year into paying millions in dividends to "shareholders" (90% of which is held by the individuals listed above).

What keeps me interested in this thread is the alternate-reality game that has formed around this game, in both senses of the word. First there is the ARG which appeals to my love of things like DVD film maker commentaries and glimpses into the game development process. Trying to figure out where exactly this project has gone so wrong, and where the money has disappeared to, is fascinating. And then, of course, there's the alternate reality that the fanatics of the game seem to live in. Though that's more of a bile fascination than an intellectual exercise one. ;)

There is some of that old promises disappointment in this thread, no doubt. But it is not a binary split (now vs then) for the audience as you suggest. The evolution from positive to disappointed has been rolling on for 10 years and still is. The “positive” new backers of today are the disappointed ones in [X] years etc.
