Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I've migrated over to PS4 for the time being playing all the old single player exclusives I missed...with the odd bit of God of War or Days Gone on PC (still PS games), AC Valhalla, occasional bouts of DCS or IL2 if I'm in the mood for serious flight simming. I'll pop back into SC when 3.17.2 drops into wave 1 PTU...otherwise, it's not worth the pulling out of hair or gently resting the furrowed brow of frustration on the keyboard every 5 minutes :)

While you are there, if you still have the hitch for spaceships stuff, may I humbly suggest having a look at Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. Buzzed around it for years, waiting for it to go on sale for the Switch. It never did 😅, so I just spent those hard earned 30 € for it yesterday. It's Privateer, remade by people who definitely played Privateer. And Freelancer. Rusty starships, tight flying (even unassisted), basic and functional ship management, fight/haul/trade/mine, a classic plot, bartenders being actually useful :sneaky: , sleek and flashy visuals, plenty of country music. How it can go by so underrated is beyond me. Takes everything that was good from those 90s games of our youth, and just gives it a fresh coat of paint. Exactly like SQ42! 🤭

(TL;DR - light, no-frills spaceships videogame with fun gameplay, might be worth a look)

Where have you heard that CIG will keep it's game forever in alpha ?
The alpha will end when all major tech and gameplays will be in. But I know you believe CIG is faking working on it... that's not my case.

And all major tech and gameplay were finally in in 2015, no wait 2016, oh well 2017, no scratch that 2018, sorry but really 2019, oh noes that's now 2020, well you know how it goes 2021, oh is it 2022 already, but be assured that by 2023.....it's like there's sort of a trend there, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

You forgot to put your finger on another trend : each patch some lacking tech or gameplay needed is released. They are less and less tech/gameplay lacking for the switch to beta, the list is shrinking.
For example, the 3.17.2 patch will come with nav mesh on planet for NPC.

Sure, released into the wild, never to be seen again apparently.

But if you didn't grasp the implications of 10 years of development until now there's no doubt you'll never do, no matter the amount of fact checking or snickering replies, so I for one am glad you keep soldiering on for "the cause" around here, every discussion needs some kind of counterpoint. Even if it goes against most of logic.

Thanks for reminding me, I was going to pick that up someday... though I hesitate to mention that it's still on sale at GOG for $4.49. 😊

Yep, 3.79 € here, with the big caveat of not being on a portable gizmo I can play from the bed or whatever. And the equally big pro I'll be able to play it with the hotas. :D

(I wanted it for the Switch specifically, I can't bring my space games away on holiday otherwise!)

I work in QA, but fortunately not in gaming. And if I had to work QA in gaming, I'd convert to whichever God would guarantee me I'd never have to work QA at CIG. Cant even begin to imagine how bizarre that must be. Good on him, hopes he finds a more normal place soon.

I know a lot of devs and QA who worked in gaming. All were overjoyed to get out.

Time to check back in on some recent ship releases...

The Argo Raft:

By the time the mission was over, we ended up both locked inside of the ship because the elevator wouldn't let us out and the airlock wouldn't open. This is about the third time I've personally ended up trapped inside of this ship since I bought it this month.

My most irritating bug is the entire state of the Argo RAFT. This ship is so awesome, but basically everything about it is broken. It was oddly working a lot better when it was the free subscriber ship last month, but after I bought it this month, I found all kinds of game breaking issues, and it's frankly unusable at this point.

While some of these could arguably be considered nit-picky, some of them are completely broken and make the ship unusable. A friend and I tried taking my Argo RAFT to do the 890 Jump mission, for fun... By the time the mission was over, we ended up both locked inside of the ship because the elevator wouldn't let us out and the airlock wouldn't open. The MISC Starfarer:

Even with the service platforms so buggy that they often fail to recognise that you indeed are in need of service, you're still hard pressed to find someone who is willing to refuel you.

But maybe the general buggyness of the platforms in the current patch is also to blame for the lack of Starfarers, since it's pretty difficult to sell fuel to someone if you can't even get it yourself.

Is the system intuitive?
Before I saw the UI of the refueling screen it felt kinda mysterious, because I had no idea why my docking request didn't show up for my friend in his Starfarer.
After we've looked at the refueling screen a bit closer, the steps to refueling became instantly more clear as we realized that we first need to extend the booming arm.
Personally I feel like it might be easier to use if the extending of the booming arm would be integrated into the docking process, particularly since you can't accept the docking request while looking at the refueling console.
We also were unable to refuel a Carrack and I'm still not sure if it was due to the equippment of the Gemini, or because some ships don't have access to this system, or because of some bug.
Is the UI clear?
Pretty clear, yes. The process description might lack a bit of visibility on the screen though, since the dullness of this part makes it look more like a design element than part of the UI, so you can totally miss it if you don't pay close attention to it.
Are all the attached mechanics easy to understand?
mostly. The docking process that can only be started once the booming arm is extended, as well as the additional screen to check for the fuel tanks being used and that need to be opened feels a bit more convoluted than necessary.
Ideally one would think that having all buttons for the refueling process on one screen and things that don't involve the refueling process directly on another screen, just for ease of use.
Also as mentioned in the question for intuitivity: I'm still not sure what prevented to refuel the Carrack.
Is it useful in the persistent universe?
Currently there's very little incentive to use a refueling ship rather than a platform, which means that even if you WANT to use one you only see someone with a Starfarer if they make a point out of bringing it in the PU to test the refueling mechanic.

I found someone using refuelling...

This guy is one of the more ardent white knights. I've ran into him a few times. He usually starts with the insults as soon as he is contradicted.

So i said to him how it certainly was a masterstroke by CR to delay the release of SQ42 by 8 years to take advantage of Starfield's release.

Now waiting for him to explode.
Masterstroke is when you get the aneurism rupture, right? I heard is pretty deadly, but the constant exposure to idiocy can have that effect.

Don't worry, they just buy the next ship, by then the bugs will surely be less.

No offense, but EDO and Mass Effect stations look decidedly better.
Hum I don't agree at all. Actually I can tell you never played Star Citizen and probalby haven't played ED for long enough to make those claims. The thing with most games is that, they may look good from "an angle" as in far away, but they don't pass the zoom and actual gameplay area test just like most console games don't pass it as they're scenery instead of game areas.
It's the difference between making a 2D card-board scenery VS a real space area to play.

And my specs are nothing to write about: CPU: 3470 (2012), GPU: 1070 (2016), RAM: 32 DDR3, SSD
With good specs you'll get ever more next-gen results:

The little things are actually big things. You can land anywhere because everything exists for everyone. There's no need for handshakes as the space is all there playable and not divided by single player area boxes of action.

We get it that acknowledging that ED potential is doomed to be unfulfilled is hard while seeing the "other" game going at it but companies reap what they sow.
If you don't invest you get left behind. As much as this hurts faithful cmdr's. At the same time You'll now SC is going under when their faithful get more joy from dissing ED than enjoying SC.
Such is the way of dealing with grief. And about grief:

That's factually wrong.

Dunno, is 3000+ hours enough?

Just stop with such nonsense. If you think SC looks amazing and next gen, good for you. To me it clearly looks dated and last gen, with the only difference between its peers being other games aim to be playable whereas SC just bruteforces endless polygons and ignores performance because "it's alpha".

Heck, even Cobra supports DLSS and ray tracing by now. CryEngine3 is just primitive in 2022.

Is it? So you've taken a screenshot of your CMDR in ED and then in SC and didn't noticed the difference? Or the planetary density detail? Or the details in the ships?
And performance? SC runs incredibly well compared with EDOdyssey and with 1000x the detail.

That's not even close to what Cobra Engine can render tech wise, not even going into the Art Style since that's going into Braben x Roberts territory.
