Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I switched on twitch and see Boredgamer is answering questions. He doesn't have the answers of course, but he gives answers nevertheless. Oooh, gen12 renderer will fix this problem, they are working on X and it will sort Y problem, ship this ship that etc.

And I realise - I don't understand why anybody would believe CIG, Boredgamer or his viewers. How can people believe something when everything in the project so far says it will never happen?

Just a wee random thought. Must be the heat.
Posting, linking... or even quoting from a BoredGamer video is an instantly banable offence in our org Discord server. I shudder to think what the puishment would be for doing the same with a Montoya/test sqn video :)

This is a strange hill to patronise from...
All of this WIP and all of this will be released sooner or later. As said before, someone asked me to give dates, I gave dates to please him. The date I gave not fulfilled (I don't care) doesn't change the fact that CIG is working and progressing on each of this points.
As the funding is skyrocketting and progress is made by CIG at each patch (denied here), this year or another year, each one of these red cross will turn green. Perhaps you try to convince yourself that Pyro will never be released... it will.

Well you should care sunshine. That's the point.

CIG keep missing those deadlines, year after year, for a reason. Because progress is not actually being made in some key areas. Most notably the networking...

On Predictions:

In the latest delays: The PES/Replication Layer update was pushed from its Q1/Q2 launch window to "late Q3". The Replication Layer job has since had 3 months added to its dev run (taking it into mid September). It would be no surprise if the following SSM/Pyro patch got pushed yet again too. At minimum, it's certainly reasonable for Agony to mock those who have said it might come sooner ;). (And utterly absurd for you to contest that post, given your woeful track record in this area...)

On Progress and 'Industrialisation':

By CIG's own admission, the proposed SSM/Pyro patch doesn't scale. The fact that it will initially double the number of solar systems while keeping the same player count signals that clearly enough. Without significantly expanded player counts they can't expand the play space much further. But CIG state they don't have a concrete plan to achieve this end.

Hopes for a desirable solution are pinned on 'Dynamic Server Meshing', itself a further blue sky R&D dream, with no meaningful precedent. (Neither DU nor Planetside, for example, have to support complex NPCs on their servers, or detailed graphical bling at density on their player's clients).

Even enthusiastic experts suggest the grander aims of DSM are unobtainable, that SSM will likely bring only minimal performance gains, and that its use requires a downgrade of some existing gameplay functionality. With that backdrop, it's interesting to see Chris drawing back from claims that SSM will bring the desired tick rate and performance improvements. Shifting that expectation to the nigh-mythical DSM instead...

Can you hear the can being kicked down the road yet...?

Because you should. They've been kicking it for quite some time now...

---

TLDR:

They are boned. And desperately trying to figure out how the hell to deliver the NPCs, scale, twitch gameplay, and visual grandeur in concert that they've promised.

Yet more buzz words, R&D, prevarication, and missed deadlines are required...

This will all happen again and again.

Perhaps you will understand what's really going on in one or 2 years.

I'd argue that progress  is being made, but whether that progress is substantive enough is questionable. Early days.
Any and all progress on the PU is being actively neutered by the idiot Roberts insistance that his personal vanity project occupy 90% of the company, development resources, cash and developers....so no, there's realistically very little progress in Star Citizen. Of course, we have no idea whatsoever what the idiot is actually doing with the cash people are still pledging for Star Citizen because of the enforced secrecy surrounding his magnum opus...besides backers funding being used to build a 4500 square foot custom built mocap studio at his Empire of Roberts building in Manchester.

Indeed, the CIG roadmap. CIG roadmaps also pointed to the latest SQ42 betas in 2020 for example. Or Salvage for 2017. Etc. Why do you think this time is different?
This tracker view is more reliable than the cards view. When a task is done, we generally see the effect in the PU few months later.
