Star Citizen Discussions v7

...Land claims - a great idea for in game but as a money grab? Pretty feeble.
But here is the point as with all funding, you don't have to buy and fund and you can buy this in game.

On one level you are spot-on. No-one is forcing the faithful to spend their dollars on something that may never exist in a game that may, or may not, ever see the light of day.

But as an idea for making money it's pretty good. If 10% of 100,000 people pay 50$, then.... well, you do the maths - but it's not a bad return for actually only writing a few lines on a web page.

And damn, who wouldn't like to make half a million dollars for 200 words?

It may even be that the game is too big in scope and too complex to weave together the disparate parts as a functioning cohesive whole - we will see.

Is this the new thing? That it was never possible but shucks they gave it the best try they could?

It's an interesting theory - but it definitely was possible. This game could have been built and then added to and we could already be enjoying 100 systems and all of Sq42. Homestead updates and new "planetary exploration licenses" could have added all the rest alongside a stream of new ship releases to fill out the world.

Instead we're here :/

I want to say something but I'm scared of woodpeckers.

No free planetary access means no need for procedural birds means no woodpeckers - FREEDOM!!!! *goes wild running around in space pants*

Just watching that video posted as evidence of progress is mad - the proc planets universally look worse than what they replaced. This problem has haunted ED too but it looks like they've got it nailed with the next planet tech update. Beyond that the amount of repeated work on show that didn't need to be redone before many other things were in place alongside the rather funny "It's the future make it all blue!" thing is just kinda sad.

Well some games (glances nervously at pile of books) prog gen in minerals, vulcanicity, weird alien plants, crashed ships and the like. It starts getting tricky...

The reconcepting of hot tubs being of such great importance says a lot about the whole design philosophy.

Well you have to immerse yourself in something...

EDs problem is that a lot of its gameplay is basic.

Lmao, basic? As opposed to what, exactly?

ED clearly has more gameplay than Wing Commander, X-Wing vs TIE, Freespace, I-War and the likes...

ED certainly has equal or often more gameplay than Privateer, Freelancer, X series, Evochron series, Starpoint Gemini series and the likes...

This is a prevalent issue with so many of ED critics : they don't actually understand space sims. Because if they do, then they would realize that saying ED has basic or no gameplay is nonsense considering what other games in the same genre have always had.

These critics saying ED has no gameplay is like saying FSX and DCS has no gameplay because they don't have shooter gameplay (legs), nor they have AAA cinematics or RPG elements, like those found in today mainstream games.

That's ridiculous isn't it?

So long as those things are true it is really just a matter of optics and morality or PTW are irrelevant.
The game is about 100 times greater in scope than elite dangerous and all with better graphics, of course it takes a long time.

Meanwhile let the hype into the vacant dark hole that once contained your soul - behold the light and worship your new God!

Shh, It’s ok commando. We’re here. We’re all right here, we won’t leave you alone. We will wait with you until the end. Shhh, it’s going to be ok. Star Citizen is going to a better place. A place where everyone will want to buy its jpegs.

The thing is that I can scope a game a trillion times greater than ED. But it doesn't mater what I scope if I can't deliver.

So up until a game gets released, let's stop these comparisons, because at the moment you are comparing an idea against an actual.

I dont know why you even discuss the point. Its a bit off-topic I think

You know it's bad when you've burned through $166Mil, decided that your jpegs aren't making enough money for you and decide to sell virtual randomised bump mapped polygons. Something is seriously wrong down at CIG...

The /r/starcitizen thread is very strange today.
The usual folks that try to drown out any discussion from people with concerns for SC, are bewildered by CIG's latest move.
Some are even being called goons.

I'm running out of popcorn.

Because one of the argument for star citizen is that it is supposedly to have more than basic/barebone in ED, while I strongly disagree with the notion that ED is basic.

And if you think about, that notion that ED is basic and SC just have to one up it, to have more, is one of the root of the problem that turned SC into what it is today, a pile of something that supposedly all encompassing game, that is in reality a hill of garbage atm.

If backers and CIG didn't have the obsession with having more than what traditionally exists in the same genre, then this would not happen.
