Are they really still giving out refunds? For some reason I thought that was a limited time thing.
Not that I really care, as I'm only in it for $35. I'm just curious.

They are legally required to do so. They didnt initially, until officials pressured CIG.

I really, honestly, absolutely wish that the gamescom presentation wouldn't have been such a disaster. I don't mean this in a sarcastic way either, I'm absolutely serious. There's some absolutely fantastic modeling and texture work in that thing. It is however pretty late to suddenly realize this. Those people who didn't cotton on after the sudden switch from their "90% customized" fork of CE to the "90% identical" Lumberyard really have themselves to blame at this point. There's no way both of these statements by CIG were true. One of them was a flat out .
Agreed. It's models are amazing and their planetary tech completely eclipses that of ED. However, what they actually have is a collection of really nice looking assets that barely work together.

An analogy might be the construct in The Matrix. They start off with an empty room and then load in assets. There is no spoon...I mean, there is no game, just a "level", the word actually used by CR on several occasions, with some assets thrown in.

I have never thought of ED in the terms of "levels", but CR obviously thinks that of his own creation. It's a pretty old-school way of looking at things, at least as far as a space sim is concerned.

Wasn't there talk of them licensing their 'crowdfunding platform' at one point, I wonder what happened to that idea?

They have similar non-success with Kythera. Except for a few people connected via Crytek and former employees like Wingman, they're grasping for customers for this unnecessary library.

Fun spare time project: Ask staunch defenders of CIG what they believe subsumption means and what the difference is to other forms of ai. Or what other forms they know of. Or how Star Citizen will benefit from subsumption AI. Hint: "More intelligent NPCs" is not the right answer.

To be fair, it's not just AI. Many of the staunch defenders have a demonstrably tenuous grasp of many of the concepts they go on about at length. I'm not sure if it's inexperience or wishful thinking, but it's certainly unsettling.

On the matter of refunds: Yes they are required to issue refunds. Also note that this applies to any Kickstarter that hasn't delivered as well. I recently got my full refund after the Tiko 3D Printer project folded and the creators announced that there would be no refunds. If you paid by credit card, it's a matter of filling out a form with the facts. Don't get wooed in with the weird argument that requesting a refund would constitute "stealing from the other backers".

(I was bewildered that this was ever considered to be a valid opinion anywhere. Much less that people asking for refunds would receive insults and treats.)

Whooo! I couldn't disagree more. They have nice hand made textures and some nice geometry, but their "planetary tech" is really primitive in comparison to what FD are doing. What made you say that?

Atmo lightning provides a lot. Its hard to compare one with and one without, tbh.

This one moon that RSI showed looks light years better than any of our land-able beige wastelands. It has more variety in "biomes" better close up details, and really good looking atmosphere/lighting effects. Yes its just ONE and we have billions but - as much as I laugh at RSI project, this planet they have created looks way way better than our rocks.

Which is why i am looking at the geometry of the planet surface, and this is where ED excels. I just image the FAoff canyon runs with a blue sky and some high res texture for the rocks plus some vegetation and it looks much better than what i have seen in any SC demo. Basically the question is what kind of tech demo could FD make if they would aim for maximal fidelity but don't care about giving an honest impression about the near future.

too bad all we can do is look at it.
I'm sure the FD graphics dept could do the same if it didn't have to be part of a playable game.

Looking at all the bugs and crash issues during the live-stream and main presentation I believe it is indeed "playable" game just with heavy scripted parts for poor Roberts to show off. Of course no idea when we will get our hands on it.

After the Gamescom reality bite, out of the 30 or so friends who had backed at similar levels to myself ($300 or so)...I'm the only one left. 22 of them asked for refunds within hours of Gamescom with no intention of buying back in with even a starter package.

As for me...I keep hovering over the figurative refund button then not doing it, no real idea why. Sure, I can afford to write the sum off without much thought...but should I be encouraging CR's directorial cinematic fantasies on the whim of ever landing my Cutlass Black on a planet/moon and actually completing a simple trade mission?

I can't keep extending my deadline to cut off my support much more without feeling like so many of the hopelessly and tragically emotionally invested drones... I'm not one of those...but wishful thinking is fast becoming a guilty passion [yesnod]

It's up to you whether you ask for a refund but I seriously doubt CR will know or even care if he did know, whether you got a refund or not. 5000+ people asking for one .... maybe

Yea I watched the "team" playing the demo at the booth and thought to myself, these folks are bored to death of what they are demoing. Laughing and cutting up just to cover up what appears to be boredom. Tryin to put the rover (or what ever it's called) on to the top of a ship (which incidentally we've already done in ED) .... Oh well ... Yes I admit that SC, what there is of it is looking good. But ..... not that I am a fashion critique, but I did not like Sandi's pants suite .....

DIfference is when FD makes improvements and introduce atmos planets, we will see thousands of them. Making one such level isn't that challenging. It is not really a planet tech, just a handcrafted items thrown together to resemble something like planet.

We won't see anything like that in ED anyway. That moon shouldn't even have an atmosphere due to its size. There wouldn't be enough mass to hold anything but perhaps a very tenuous atmosphere, if any at all.

I have obviously last track of FD development When are FD introducing landing on atmos planets, I'm still awaiting being able to walk around stations. Please please tell me it is soon, is it the 2017?

I imagine that it is a huge technical challenge and require a lot of work, In fact I always presumed that they would delay it and work on more gameplay and content.

Huh? The one moon they've shown had exactly one biome: the lifeless rocky wasteland biome. Which is the same one Elite's had for years, and which still hasn't been delivered for SC.

Very true. The question is: will they?
I don't believe Chris believes there is anything wrong with the flight model as it is so it probably won't get changed.

Ofc they will, it's an iterative process until they find the sweet spot of "fun" and balance. It will allways be an ongoing process along development and after release. That's just the way mmorpg's work, the more complex is the game the harder it is to balance it to achieve an "overall fun" experience.

Gamescom is not an appropriate platform for showing "proof of concept" work thus by your own account he is misusing it to mislead the public on the status of the game to attract funding, as at no point during his demonstration does he caveat this work as anything other than game-play fit for purpose as any other product demonstrated at the show.

You might be mistaking the limited 3.0 build that allowed average gamers to text some vehicles and weapons for a few minutes at the Gamescom Booth with the Gamescom Show made specially for the hard-core backers at the Gloria Theater that has nothing to do with the Gamescom Convention or it's generalized public.

Sorry but from that list lets put what is really important:

- MobiGlass Enhancements (And it's debatable)
- 2.0 Item System
- Clothing Customization - Is not relevant in any way to the future gameplay or the core mechanics
- Subsumption AI - And we didn't really saw anything of this, just a couple of NPCs walking, one "fixing something" and a couple doing like if they were talking to each other.

Considering that the gear you wear influences your ability to breath, carry certain weapons or even endure certain temperatures I'd say it's very relevant to the core gameplay. Besides they showcased the modular clothing system quite nicely with the armor fitting nicely within all the layers.

What we saw from AI is more than what we saw before, we saw NPC's interacting when entering the store or speaking at us when passing which is something. They talked about 200 NPC's in Levski alone roaming around. Makes a ton of difference when making a place look alive.

- Oxigen/Survival features - The only survival feature was the oxigen, there was little else...
- Player Com's With Video - which may be great someday but for now... is not something useful and will probably not be usable by the players for quite a loooong time.
- FaceTrack+VOIP Useless and BTW doesn't help the game in any way for now, and even later will not be popular, time will tell!

- Cargo Tranportation - And again it's debatable because I didn't saw any real and amazing progress on this... and I'm going to ignore the ghost box from the presentation
- Idris flyable (x2) - Doesn't affect the game in any way for now
- Landing 2 gladius on a Idris nothing new, amazing or really an improvement, and much less on a ship that players will not use for quite a long time.

Oxigen / Survival feature affects directly the gameplay and opens up gameplay options. Video/Sound Player Com's and FaceTrack+VOIP are relevant for the project as it was a feature planned since the beginning.

Cargo Transportation is clearly tied with the Trading profession and all the Quests that involve picking up /stealing stuff.

Having 2 Idris flyable along with more ship's is an enormous technical achievement. It show's great progress considering that some time ago they were having trouble getting 1 Idris to work.

Having 2 ship's seamlessly landing on a Idris IS a technical advancement. Considering the complications they have had to overcome just to build the big ship's getting them into a flyable state and with players going in and out of them it's nice to see.

Those are all clear showcases of "several progress in both game features and technical advancements".

This is nice. But I think players would rather see *Gameplay loops*

But they have seen gameplay loops and seen core mechanics working. Just that some choose to ignore it for some strange reason.

I can hop on the current playable build of Star Citizen alpha, spawn in my bunk in a space station, walk to the lobby and spawn my ship (space legs), invite some friends (multicrew), go and do simple missions like kill some pirates and enable com'arrays (Dogfighting and EVA) or kill some criminals at the Kareah Station (FPS + Bounty Hunting) and Earn some credits, pass by CryastThen get back to the Space Station and buy some new clothe's and or FPS weapons (fps and char customization).

That's plenty of core mechanics working seamlessly interconnected. The 3.0 aims to add planetary scale to it and improve said mechanics while adding more depth with missions, npc's, survival features and so on.

Yes another $2,000,000 this weekend. I suppose that resistance is futile.

On a happy note only $54 of the 158,000,000 is mine and I've enjoyed it. I would hate to get that refunded then have to buy it back at twice as much if it all all works out, no one can predict the future so its a gamble I know.
My latest update is that it is unclear if DS is still a backer or not, perhaps one of the Smarties (DS followers) can let us know, he may just still be a backer so he can pass judgment.

I helped a bit and got a Dragonfly because the idea of gunning baddies with the rail gun while my mate drives is highly appealing. And also because I will need something to explore the planetside when the time comes.

No you didn't. As you didn't the past 10x people asked. So again: when?

Pretty sure we've discussed this before:

Just like ED it's a 10 year plan for full completion. A marathon, not a sprint if you like. We enjoy the ride the best we can by playtesting and helping out CIG with feedback and support.

Now if you ask me when will Star Citizen get all it's planed features working nicely along with procedural birds I'd say that it would be around the same time ED's get's all it's planned features working along with it's big game hunting going on. In short, No one know's. not even CIG or Frontier much less us from the outside.

Better just enjoy the ride the best we can and be happy that the games continue their development and we get to play them.

Snarfbuckle, you might want to look up groups such as : SDC, Goons, and others like them, who are into games for the lulz, or as SDC call it, smiles per gallon.

There will always be those who look to cause mischief in games.

To be honest, if SC is ever released, and a half decent game, i'll be tempted to sign up with the most basic package and then spend my time stealing big ships from people who bought Idrises and the like, a la Grand Theft Auto. :D

That's the appeal of Star Citizen, so many possibilities lures all types of gamers. With their planetary tech coming online with 3.0 I would add a map ala Playerunkown Battlegrounds in the Star Marine module just for the sake of it.

Indeed. But as noted, if the game is ever released, you can bet the goons are going to be playing in numbers.

I'm sure CIG welcomes everybody's money.

Based on what?

- They have the equivalent budget of other large gaming companies
- They DO have talented staff among the 400 employees (Whatever you might think of some individuals)
- Erin Roberts heading SQ42 production DO have a solid rep of managing to get games released

Whatever happens with the PU and possible MMO shenanigans and hype they WILL cut that down and consolidate to get SQ42 out the door.
That said, yes, there is cause for concern and im greatly annoyed over the lack of simple screenshots, white/greybox or short video snippets about SQ42.

But saying it CANT be done IS hyperbole.

Yes people do get carried away by emotions I think and tend to hyperbole easily without much thought going.

Static said it best back concerning the neogaf SC thread and I think it also applies to this one and other's across the internet:
...As a side note this is an emblematic problem with thread. People are labeled as "Defenders" as if they are spouting some insane theory while we are just providing information that has been out in the open for quite some time. We have people who will talk about mismanagement, lack of funds, the buggy state of alpha, scope increase, what may or may not happen. But the vast majority of these are either speculation, misinformation, or guesses. The amount of time information has been repeated in this thread and links posted, and open knowledge given has been absurd, yet oddly enough some of the same talking points get brought up ad-nausem. This has been referred to as an echo chamber by some but at that could be simply because the same detractors or the same uniformed posters regurgitate talking points. No one is here to convince you to support the game. All people have tried to do is clear up misinformation. But it is obvious how this is going to play out because of so many that are less interested in discussing but pushing a particular view out as if it is fact...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=247044458&postcount=10661

Just trade "Defenders" for "Believers", "White-Knights", "Faithfull" and it's more or less the same behavior.

When we focus on the game and it's development with the intuit of analyzing based on world examples it's a much gratifying and constructive experience than the same old rehashing of the unfathomable failed doom predictions.

So presumably Foundry 42 in Manchester are doing more than sitting around on their hands and still getting paid. What are those guys up to there? If they really haven't done anything for a year, which I sincerely doubt, what have they been working on in the meantime. Even CR wouldn't let them sit around and get paid for nothing, surely.

Foundry42 UK is the biggest Studio and it touches "everything". The fact that we saw 2 Idris's battling it out was thanks to a lot of work from the UK folks.

With regards to motion capture, people often think that a mocapped performance by an actor can simply be integrated into the game, but that's pretty far from the truth.
Mocap performances go through the same pipeline every other animation in the game does.

Quality post, have some reputation.

That's a silly amount of senior positions to have open 5+ years into a project. They've been open for some time too. It says much about CIG and its reputation that they can't attract the necessary skill set.

Common industry practice. Every big studio is allways looking for fresh or experienced talented people.
