Game Discussions Star wars Squadrons

Somebody should make a video showing Star Wars fighters in Newtonian combat. Then cut to George Lucas shaking his head and babbling about Howard Hughes' dogfight sequences.

I don't know... conceptually, it looks like exactly the thing I wanted to see being done with the Star Wars license. On the other hand, it's EA, so how good can it be?

Multiplayer PVP space combat remains a very difficult genre to do right. The good games in the genre usually rely on Newtonian flight or some other implementation of decoupled flight/aim to solve the "two ships endlessly chasing each other's tails in a circle" problem. But FAOFF style flight doesn't tend to result in very "Star Wars" feeling gameplay. Even in ED, which tried to go for some sort of compromise, PVP ended up being an FAOFF fest. It's going to be interesting to see how EA attacks this problem.

Good for EA to recognise, though, how absolutely fundamental VR support is for a cockpit-based space game in the year 2020.
VR is only absolutely fundamental to those who use VR...I still use a head/eyetracking system on a flat monitor for flight sims and space games like Elite or SC... so not as important or fundamental for me as utilising support for my Tobii 4C ;)

Some people hate EA, other people hate Sean Murray. Heck, I could hate Microsoft for the crap they pulled in the 1990s, but it seems foolish to deprive myself of good games because of a company's past mistakes (especially if they learn from those mistakes). If the game is good, I will likely get it. I still enjoy Star Wars Battlefront (the latest one) to this day.

BTW, Frontier has done me more "wrong" as a company over the years than EA ever has. 🤷

I’m pretty excited about this one. X-wing and x-wing vs tie fighter still have a special place in my hearth. We’ll see how this one goes but i’ve heard there is also a single player campaign and it will be full vr. The vr mission in battlefront was pretty fun, you sat in an x-wing, what’s not great about that, but the flying was not really my thing, eventhough I enjoyed it quite a few times. I hope it’s a bit more than that, control wise, but even if it is an extended campaign with that flightmodel, I think I’m still buying it. I’m just hoping it gives us a bit more freedom in the controls. EVE Valkyrie was quite fun to play in VR, if I they can get some of that action in it, but also in a single player campaign, I’m down. My expectations are quite low, so it can only get better 🙂

Id love it if ea came in and just made a space game that was popular to the masses and did the same things as the british developers.

Sure it wont, and at the very least theyd sell a few more sequels before it got there.. but maybe the missing campaign and cqc.. that flies like descent (is that what star citizen does too?).

I hope it rocks the boat for elite at least, frontier are way too comfortable.

They actually think 3 years and no ship interiors is acceptable. With competition, there wouldn't be a point developing space legs without ship interiors.

you can tell this is an EA title.

Below is from the Steam page. Looks like loot boxes confirmed. Sorry surprise mechanics

Yes I saw that too.
It shows that there will be a huge monetizing machine attached to the game.

With VR confirmed, this is a reasonably exciting title, I wonder how deep the gameplay will be. I.e. strictly short sessions of PVP 'CQC' and story driven PVE scenarios, or it will involve more of actually flying to places and stuff like that.
While the video is nice, it only showcases how far the graphics have come in the past few year and to be honest Elite starts to look outdated. I certainly hope that there will be a major overhaul (especially lighting) for the vanilla Horizons too.

Well, with Fallen Order EA took a step in the right direction, and now with Steam presence I do give credit for them trying to make things more player friendly.
Launch price will be €40 which for an AAA title is fair at launch. For any MMO game that is subject to updates and server maintenance, I think monetization is absolutely OK as long as it is not too lootbox-heavy or not blatantly P2W.

It doesnt look like theres going to be a campaign? Didnt the original xvt flop because there was no campaign? Why?

Also if its first person its probably going to upset the other one more than elite in terms of replacing gameplay..?

Steam page quotes 'unique single player campaign'. If anything, it should be the main course as 5 vs. 5 multiplayer doesn't sound too exciting these days.

I’ve definitely played, and enjoyed, some EA games. That being said, I haven’t knowingly bought an EA game for about ten years now. I can think of quite a few EA games I would've bought, if they weren’t being published by EA: Mass Effect 3, Sim City, Jedi: Fallen Order, and several of the Dragon Age games immediately come to mind.
You dodged a bullet with Sim City. Isnt Maxis now closed?

starts to look outdated
Only just now? I've been hating the cockpit interface/design since I saw how more refined it can be (in scam citizen). I know, they make money selling pixel spaceships, but still, it looks like a proper spaceship. For contrast, I don't like Elite design style - it's weirdly cartoonish to me. The notable exception are the Gutamaya ships which in my opinion are the closest thing to how a spaceship should look.

I do wonder if this spells the end for X-Wing VM?

I don't think a fan remake of ice age tech ;-) can directly compete with a AAA production pumped up by multi-billion dollar studio so I don't really think EA will shot it down. On the other hand this is EA we're talking about so all evil bets are on the table ;-)

It's more likely the creator will abandon it if the new game is any good.

Hmm, well the script in the trailer doesn't invoke Lucasarts level of writing, it looks a bit like a space camp team of ten friends pick any ship they like for any 5v5 mission then say things like:

"Think you can escape me!"
"full power to engines!"
"Fight for vegance"
"Fight for hope"
"The perfect shot!"
