Stargoid Intercept

When Stargoids first showed up, I really thought a bunch of people tried to intercept them and go out and see what they were. But after watching a few Elite dangerous vids lately and asking in a few discords, everyone was like "yeah no one has ever intercepted a stargoid." and I was like "Wait, I did, like months ago." So I realized maybe people don't know it was possible or something, I don't know. So I threw some clips together and posted up on youtube.

Based on my formation flying with it and watching the speed gauge, I can conclude that the Stargoid/Titan does indeed possess a supercruise drive or something very very similar because after I speed match with it, our deceleration rate with respect to the nearby system mass is the exact same. my ship is slowing down as the system is mass-locking me, and the Stargoid is staying right next to me. I also noticed that when I flew behind it, it would push down my max speed to keep me from getting closer or even flying past it. So it was mass-locking me, which is something supercruise drives of larger ships also do, though it might have also been an exclusion zone. Also yes, you see right, that is an FSD Interdictor and I did try to use it, but sadly nothing happened.

Still very fascinating stuff and I'm sorry I didn't post it sooner. And If the "First Cmdr to intercept a Thargoid" badge is still available to claim, I'd like to raise my hand and claim it. :)

I saw the vid, didn't notice if you tried to interdict.
late in the video I switched back to combat mode and tried clicking the key for the interdictor, it didn't do anything. not even a Beep Beep for a failure, it just wouldn't lock on. I mean I didn't expect it to work , but it would have been cool if it did and set that system as the maelstrom system. :D

I suspect the people telling you nobody intercepted them do not count attempted interception -- more than a few commanders saw the swirly sprite whizz past their windshields, responding to no hailing frequencies, I'm sure (well, "stop-motion its way past" -- FP precision got jumpy close up, if I recall correctly, unless (presumably) one could have the rendez-vous near the system's main star). :p

Yeah what do you do with a drunken Titan?

Put 'em in bed with with the captains daughter with the constructs beacon?
Strange I remember that line in the Arthur Ransome books being
“Put ‘em in the scuppers with the hosepipe on them”

Maybe it got changed due to the bad press about waterboarding?

It's a sea shanty, probably an old one at that, so might have had a few different lyrics to it over the years

Yeah, goes back to the 1830s or earlier.
Ransome wrote the Swallows and Amazon children’s books in the 1930s which included several snippets of shantys.

I've done a fair bit of Stargoid hunting back in the day. In VR, this was very confusing because their size didn't change, but their distance clearly did. A few times it felt like I could reach out and touch them, as if they were right on my windscreen, and I've had them zap right through my forehead a few times. Very confusing.

Ok I mean I guess I can accept that. Question though, up until my vid what's the closest anyone has gotten? I mean as you can see in the vid I got as close as you can before the game itself stopped me. and this is just clips, I flew in formation with it for over an hour, That's got to be worth something.

Ah, I don't think I recall anybody "snapping" to the Stargoids, as translational frame of reference, and might not have expected it possible -- the things certainly blinked right past me, for one, and were too fast to match speeds with... :7

Their inter-system speeds varied pretty substantially depending on which Stargoid and which system they were passing through (and they slowed right down at the end so that they wouldn't be early for U14).

Being a signal source, they'll also slow your ship if targeted and nearby - but most signal sources are stationary: as seen in the video, a moving signal source can establish an equilibrium where you can't get closer to it from behind.

Loads of people went out to them. What I don't think anybody successfully do, was to drop in on them. I tried a bit one evening, sat in formation with it, weird sprite effect when you got close enough to drop, but I couldn't get a lock. I probably could have tried harder, but it was late.

oh, so you think the reason i was able to speed match was because I had it targeted as the active target? Ok didn't think about that.

I tried in all the ways I could think of, and while I was doing this I was in the AXI discord voice chat running things to try. In fact to even put myself in a position to even get to where I was. I had to stop in front of it when it was still some distance away, turn 180, so my nose way pointing away from it, and accelerate up, then decelerate in increments to let it catch up to me. Once it did, it was very easy to stay matched up to it. I don't know if any combination of what I did meant any difference, but that's how I pulled it off.

Ok, so I'm concluding this was just another encounter of no real difference or importance. Well ok, figured it would be, I never seem to catch a break. But I'm glad I started a conversation at least.

Yeah, IIRC, if you're locked onto a body or signal, your ship will try to slow itself to allow for drop if your throttle is at 75% or less. If it wasn't targeted you might have been able to catch up. In this case it was acting like a signal or body moving very fast, kind of like Mitterand Hollow where locking on and chasing as it moves away doesn't work too well. A quirk of the game when targeting fast moving bodies.
