I had surgery a couple of years ago to 'lop off' a part of the disc that was pressing into my spinal cord. It did help! Took about 2 years to settle back down to a 'mild nuisance'. Recently though I have been moving house .... BAD _ VERY BAD _ STUPENDOUSLY STUPID MOVE!!!
I had the same problem.
There was some "tentacle" protruding from my damaged disc that was pressing on some nerve bundle
(I lost control over my left leg, I only felt pain like it was burned and cut and frozen and torn apart, all simultaneously).
Doctors wanted to make an OP instantly, but I found out that as long as you feel pain, it means that nerves are not dying, and MAYBE you can recover when inflammation will recede AND you manage to reduce the size of this "rogue" part of your disc by intense training - basically you "stretch" your spine making more distance between your vertebraes and it MAY "suck in" this tentacle that has emerged from your jelly like disc cushion.
Yes , I basically rebelled to doctors because I "googled something". And because OP seemed to be risky stuff.
With a lot of luck and physiotherapy i managed to do exactly as planned.
My back seem to be better with every year, I had no episode of acute pain, even momentary, for... 3 years or so.
